STEP 2025 URBAN DEVELOPMENT PLAN VIENNA TRUE URBAN SPIRIT FOREWORD STEP 2025 Cities mean change, a constant willingness to face new develop- ments and to be open to innovative solutions. Yet urban planning also means to assume responsibility for coming generations, for the city of the future. At the moment, Vienna is one of the most rapidly growing metropolises in the German-speaking region, and we view this trend as an opportunity. More inhabitants in a city not only entail new challenges, but also greater creativity, more ideas, heightened development potentials. This enhances the importance of Vienna and its region in Central Europe and thus contributes to safeguarding the future of our city. In this context, the new Urban Development Plan STEP 2025 is an instrument that offers timely answers to the questions of our present. The document does not contain concrete indications of what projects will be built, and where, but offers up a vision of a future Vienna. Seen against the background of the city’s commit- ment to participatory urban development and urban planning, STEP 2025 has been formulated in a broad-based and intensive process of dialogue with politicians and administrators, scientists and business circles, citizens and interest groups. The objective is a city where people live because they enjoy it – not because they have to. In the spirit of Smart City Wien, the new Urban Development Plan STEP 2025 suggests foresighted, intelli- gent solutions for the future-oriented further development of our city. Primarily through loans to build up the economy and diplomatic pressure, the United States and Great Britain helped to maintain an independent Austrian state and prevent an Anschluss or union with Germany from 1918 to 1934. In addition, this study examines the minority of Austrians who opposed an Anschluss . The three main groups of Austrians that supported independence were the Christian Social Party, monarchists, and some industries and industrialists. These Austrian nationalists cooperated with the Americans and British in sustaining an unwilling Austrian nation. Ultimately, the global depression weakened American and British capacity to practice dollar and pound diplomacy, and the popular appeal of Hitler combined with Nazi Germany’s aggression led to the realization of the Anschluss . -

As the largest Hapsburg residential palace, the Albertina dominates the southern tip of the Imperial Palace on one of the last remaining fortress walls in Vienna. ANKER CLOCK This clock (built 1911–14) was created by the painter and sculptor Franz von Matsch and is a typical Art Nouveau design. It forms a bridge between the two parts of the Anker Insurance Company building. In the course of 12 hours, 12 historical figures (or pairs of figures) move across the bridge. Every day at noon, the figures parade, each accompanied by music from its era. AUGARTEN PORCELAIN MANUFacTORY Founded in 1718, the Vienna Porcelain Manufactory is the second-oldest in Europe. Now as then, porcelain continues to be made and painted by hand. Each piece is thus unique. A tour of the manufactory in the former imperial pleasure palace at Augarten gives visitors an idea of how much love for detail goes into the making of each individual piece. The designs of Augarten have been created in cooperation with notable artists since the manufactory was established. -

But there are substantial regional differences within and between these countries with respect to available net income. According to GfK’s prognosis, Switzerland’s almost 8.5 million inhabitants have a total purchasing power of €356.9 billion in 2019 (excludes Liechten- stein). Austria’s approximately 8.8 million inhabitants have around €212.3 billion at their disposal in 2019, while Germany’s approximately 82.8 million inhabitants have €1,968.7 billion. Purchasing power is a measure of the nominal net income available to the population, including government subsidies such as unemployment assis- tance, child benefit and pension contributions. The population uses these funds for consumer purchases as well as expenditures related to accom- modation, recreation and savings. The Imperial Palace Vienna at a Glance Imperial Palace Vienna Since its creation in the 13th century, the Imperial Palace Vienna has been subject to constant modification. As a consequence, it has be- come a reflection of the many cultural, political, social, and economic developments throughout Austria’s history. Today, the Swiss Yard (Schweizerhof) represents the oldest part of the building complex. It dates back to the time of Emperor Frederick II of the House of Hohenstaufen. Over the centuries, the rectangular palace of the Late Medieval Period was reconstructed, adapted, expanded, and connected to its adjacent buildings until it eventually became the building complex that, today, constitutes the Imperial Palace Vienna. Dreaming of an Imperial Forum, Emperor Franz Joseph I initiated the last large extension in the second half of the 19th century. Ho- wever, his dream never fully came true. Only Maria-Theresien-Squa- re (Maria- Theresien-Platz) with its two world-famous museums, the youngest wing of the Imperial Palace Vienna – New Castle (Neue Burg) – and St. Michael‘s Gate (Michaelertor) with its sumptuous cupola were to be completed. In its present form the Imperial Palace Vienna, which is situated in the heart of the city, covers an area of more than 300,000 m2 and fulfils a wide array of roles.
