Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 Abstract That Most Perfidious Institution is a study of Africans - slaves and slave owners - and their central roles in both the expansion of slavery in the early nineteenth century and attempts to reform servile relationships in the late nineteenth century. The pivotal place of Africans can be seen in the interaction between indigenous slave-owning elites (aristocrats and urban Euro-African merchants), local European administrators, and slaves themselves. My approach to this problematic is both chronologically and geographically comparative. The central comparison between Senegal and the Gold Coast contrasts the varying impact of colonial policies, integration into the trans-Atlantic economy; and, more importantly, the continuity of indigenous institutions and the transformative agency of indigenous actors. -

Abstract: The historiography on African Christianity has tended to emphasize two facets: the role of western missionaries and the continuing growth of African Independent Churches. In more recent times, the explosive revival of Pentecostalism has attracted attention. What is lacking is an in-depth study of mainline, missions-founded churches, which have integrated the strengths of western missions, African Independency and Pentecostalism. This study uses the post-missionary era of the Methodist Church, Ghana, 1961-2000, to examine how Ghanaian Methodists have appropriated Wesleyan theology in their mission endeavors. Special attention is given to liturgical renewal, especially the use of ebibindwom (sacred lyrics) and the dynamics of ethnicity in missions in Ghana during this period. The Methodist Church, Ghana, began as an indigenous initiative in 1831 with a Fante Bible Class in Cape Coast before Wesleyan missionaries joined them in 1835. Tracing its growth through the ministries of Thomas Birch Freeman, the Nananom Mpow incident, the effect of the William Wade Harris and the Sampson Oppong revivals, this study asserts that the Methodist Church, Ghana had a decisive indigenous beginning. Is the Methodist Church, Ghana, therefore an indigenous church? Would it have been so if the MMS missionaries had not been part of it? What is the role of Ghanaian Methodism in the political evolution of Ghana? What do Ghanaians think of present-day Methodism? These and other questions would be addressed in this paper and thus offer a more comprehensive understanding of African Christianity. -

It was my good luck on my first trip to Ghana in the summer of 2007 to meet Adwoa Grace Kyeremeh, member of the royal family and dairy farmer, who welcomed me and made me feel at home in Anomabo. This study of Anomabo's rock residences results from the collective efforts of many people, including Grace, to whom I owe gratitude. Contacts made in the summer of 2007 with local leaders and individuals such as Nana Kwa Nyanfoeku Akwa (Nana Kwa), the town historian, revealed the potential for dissertation study of the visual culture. I returned in the summer of 2008 to further my pre-dissertation research with scholars at the University of Ghana in Legon, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science & Technology in Kumasi (KNUST), and the University of Cape Coast as well as several of the leaders and townspeople of Anomabo. I stayed in Ghana for six mo nths in 2009 to complete my dissertation fieldwork. To prepare for my interviews, I studied the Akan culture and Twi language at the University of Florida. -

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 ABSTRACT During the first quarter of the eighteenth century and long after, Bosome led a politically unexciting life. In contrast, the other two Akyera states, Abuakwa and Kotoku, pursued an aggressive foreign policy and tightly guarded their independence against hostile neighbours. Between 1730 and 17^2 they acquired imperial domination over the eastern half of the Gold Coast west of the Volta. In 17^> however, Kotoku succumbed to Asante authority. Abuakwa resisted Asante but yielded to that power in 1783* The fall of the Akyem empire increased the area of Asante domination. The Asante yoke proved unbearable; consequently between 1810 and 1831 the Akyem states, as members of an Afro-European alliance, fought a successful war of independence against that power. -

No part of the following paper may be used or reproduced in any manner whatsoever without written permission of the Program of African Studies, except in the case of brief quotations embodied in critical articles and reviews. “Professional sentimentalists”: Internecine conflicts in the emergent Gold Coast Abstract This paper examines conflictual relationships among British members of the Gold Coast administration. It adds to the literature that problematizes earlier notions of colonialism by highlighting tensions and contradictions inherent in colonial governance structures. This paper argues that at its inception, the Gold Coast colonial administration had deep cracks as a result of personal and interest group conflicts, as well as policy incoherence between the War and Colonial Office in England and the local administration. These contradictions in the colonial structure provided an avenue by which the Gold Coast elite influenced the character and policy direction of the colonial state from its inception. Scholarly reexamination of colonialism has contributed to a greater understanding of the complexities of the colonial encounter. Scholars from various disciplinary orientations have highlighted the errors of homogenous conceptions of colonialism (Comaroff 1989; Cooper 2005; Lange, Mahoney, and von Hau 2006; Lawrance, Osborne, and Roberts 2006; Steinmetz 2007); however these insights have a longer history. As far back as 1945, Malinowski counselled anthropologists studying colonial societies that European colonial settlers were rarely a unified whole, and were often locked in conflicts of various kinds. -

This thesis is a study of the current exorcistic ministry within a Pentecostal church in Ghana with reference to the Akan culture. The general opinion gathered from current anthropological studies on witchcraft is that the ultimate goal of exorcism is to become modernised. However, using interdisciplinary studies with a theological focus, the thesis departs from this, and contends that it is divinatory- consultation or an inquiry into the sacred and the search for meaning that underlies the current “deliverance” ministry, where the focus is to identify and break down the so- called demonic forces by the power of God in order to “deliver” people from their torment. -

Edusa-Eyison HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT AND LEGAL STATUS OF THE CHURCH The Genesis of Wesleyan Missionary Activities in the Gold Coast, now Ghana (1835f), and the arrival and work of the Rev. Joseph Rhodes Dunwell The Rev. Joseph Rhodes Dunwell, the pioneer Wesleyan Methodist Missionary to work in the Gold Coast arrived in the country on 1st January 1835. Before him, a number of missionaries of other denominations – Anglican, Dutch Reformed Church, French and Portuguese Catholic priests, and Presbyterians had worked in the Gold Coast with similar intentions of propagating the Gospel resulting in the creation of pockets of Christian communities prior to 1835. The foundation laid by these, the Methodists tapped for expansion.1 The above notwithstanding, missionary outreach in the Gold Coast was in many ways the success story of indigenous African zeal. Agbeti emphasised this when he wrote: ...as far as missionary enterprise in Africa was concerned, that perspective of the circumstances which led the Wesleyan Methodist Missionary Society to send their Missionaries there (Ghana) were a demonstration of the role which African initiative played in the establishment of Methodist work in Ghana.2 This is reminiscent of 18th century Sierra Leonean history where the African Settlers in that country who came from Britain, Canada and the Americas after the abolition of the slave trade were already Christians belonging to a variety of denominations – Baptist, Wesleyan etc. The point here is that Christianity (led by Africans from the Diaspora) had already been introduced in Sierra Leone before the Church Missionary Society (CMS) started its work in that country. -
