While Shadowcat might be saved with the Fantastic Four's help, the Angel contemplates a much bleaker fate! Scalphunter, unwilling to let his former teammates remain zombies, killed each of them and then shot Madelyne Pryor in the heart. This aspect of the story was satirized in What The--?! Sinister only cares about his work. While I think the crossover renders the story just a little bit too cluttered to be compared to The Dark Phoenix Saga , it does represent something of a highlight in an impressive run. However, it's no less important to the FF because of a plot line questioning Reed's motives before their initial spaceflight. This crossover is more impressive for introducing a number of significant shake-ups that actually mattered.

  • Daredevil As Legal Emblem
https://lthj.qut.edu.au/ LAW, TECHNOLOGY AND HUMANS Volume 2 (2) 2020 https://doi.org/10.5204/lthj.1656 Daredevil as Legal Emblem Timothy D. Peters University of the Sunshine Coast, Australia Abstract This article draws together two trajectories of legal scholarship: the turn to the visual in legal studies and the emergence of the subfield of law and comics, or ‘graphic justice’. It does this via an analysis of superhero comics as fitting within a particular genealogy of the ius imaginum, or law of images. This is not to argue simply that superhero comics are dominated by narratives of law, justice and legality—they are—but rather that the very theatrical figure of the superhero and its encompassing of a dual persona is a presentation of a particular political theology of the image. The article analyses the way in which this political theology is rendered visible in Charles Soule’s Daredevil: Back in Black, highlighting the image of the superhero and its connection to both sovereignty and the biopolitics of personhood. Keywords: Law of images; legal emblem; Daredevil; law and the visual; graphic justice; law and comic. “Law exists in a world of images whose power is not located primarily in their representation of something exterior, but instead is found in images themselves.” Sarat, 2000.1 1. Introduction “What authorises the image?” This question was posed by Richard Sherwin in a recent exploration of the jurisprudential concerns related to the emergence of our modern visual economy.2 If, as Austin Sarat declared 20 years ago, law lives

  • Reading the Uncanny Xmen: Gender, Race, and The
READING THE UNCANNY XMEN: GENDER, RACE, AND THE MUTANT METAPHOR IN A POPULAR NARRATIVE By Joseph James Darowski A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY American Studies 2011 ABSTRACT READING THE UNCANNY XMEN: GENDER RACE AND THE MUTANT METAPHOR IN A POPULAR NARRATIVE By Joseph James Darowski The first superhero comic book was published in 1938 and since that time the genre has become a staple of American popular culture. While superhero stories have been adapted into every popular storytelling medium, the genre is most closely associated with the comic book industry. This dissertation examines the first 500 issues of The Uncanny XMen, one of the most popular series to be published in America. In particular, the portrayals of race and gender will be analyzed by performing a close reading of the stories published as well as a numerical analysis of the ethnicity, nationality, and gender of the heroes, villains, and guest stars who appear in the series. The X‐Men comic book franchise has a reputation among fans, creators, and scholars as one of the most diverse and progressive superhero comic book titles. The core conceit of the series, that there are people called mutants who are born with powers and abilities that separate them from normal humans, has allowed the themes of societal prejudice and hatred to be explored in a metaphorical fashion, though looking closely at the race and gender of the characters in the series reveals a different reality than the common perception of the series.
