The Rise of the Anti-Hero: Pushing Network Boundaries in the Contemporary U.S
The Rise of The Anti-Hero: Pushing Network Boundaries in The Contemporary U.S. Television YİĞİT TOKGÖZ Submitted to the Graduate School of Social Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in CINEMA AND TELEVISION KADIR HAS UNIVERSITY June, 2016 I II ABSTRACT THE RISE OF THE ANTI-HERO: PUSHING NETWORK BOUNDARIES IN THE CONTEMPORARY U.S. TELEVISION Yiğit Tokgöz Master of Arts in Cinema and Television Advisor: Dr. Elif Akçalı June, 2016 The proliferation of networks using narrowcasting for their original drama serials in the United States proved that protagonist types different from conventional heroes can appeal to their target audiences. While this success of anti-hero narratives in television serials starting from late 1990s raises the question of “quality television”, developing audience measurement models of networks make alternative narratives based on anti-heroes become widespread on the U.S. television industry. This thesis examines the development of the anti-hero on the U.S. television by focusing on the protagonists of pay-cable serials The Sopranos (1999-2007) and Dexter (2006-2013), basic cable serials The Shield (2002-2008) and Mad Men (2007-2015), and video-on-demand serials House of Cards (2013- ) and Hand of God (2014- ). In brief, this thesis argues that the use of anti-hero narratives in television is directly related to the narrowcasting strategy of networks and their target audience groups, shaping a template for growing networks and newly formed distribution services to enhance the brand of their corporations. In return, the anti-hero narratives push the boundaries of conventional hero in television with the protagonists becoming morally less tolerable and more complex, introducing diversity to television serials and paving the way even for mainstream broadcast networks to develop serials based on such protagonists. -

Preemptive Narratives in Recent Television Series Par Toni Pape
Ryan King-White Dissertation
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: BASEBALL, CITIZENSHIP, AND NATIONAL IDENTITY IN GEORGE W. BUSH’S AMERICA Ryan Edward King‐White, Doctor of Philosophy, 2008 Dissertation directed by: Professor David L. Andrews Department of Kinesiology The four separate, but related, studies within this research project seek to offer a critical understanding for how American national identit(ies), and particular forms of (cultural) citizenship are discursively constructed and performed in and through the sport of baseball. More specifically, this dissertation will utilize and expand upon critical theories of neoliberalism, citizenship, whiteness, and (physical) cultural studies to engage various empirical sites, which help provide the context for everyday life in contemporary America. Each chapter looks at various empirical aspects of the Little League World Series and the fans of the Boston Red Sox (popularly referred to as Red Sox Nation) that have historically privileged particular performances and behaviors often associated with white, American, heterosexual, upper‐middle class, masculine subject‐positions. In the first instance this project also attempts to describe how ‘normalized’ American citizenship is being (re)shaped in and through the sport of baseball. Secondly, I aim to critically evaluate claims made by both Little League Baseball, and the Boston Red Sox organization, in response to (popular) criticisms (Bryant, 20002; Mosher, 2001a, 2001b, 2001c) of regressive activity and behavior historically related to their organizations, that they -

ETC Marketing Metadata 1.0
ETC Marketing Metadata 1.0 Introduction The explosion of online digital content has heightened the need for complete and accurate marketing metadata to assist consumers in search and discovery of movies and television. In addition, the increase in online distributors with widely different content submission requirements makes the delivery of accurate metadata a time-consuming and difficult process for content owners. For this reason, the Entertainment Technology Center organized the Metadata Working Group to create best-practices for the creation and distribution of marketing metadata. This working group is made up of metadata experts from the major Hollywood Studios, film service, and technology companies. Historically, each digital service provider has created its own metadata specification and required that content providers conform their product information to that format. Unfortunately, the lack of standards underpinning those metadata elements -- their names and definition, and the terms used to populate them -- has confounded efforts to streamline the digital distribution, and ultimately the search and discovery, of content. Some forward-looking groups have sought to simplify the process; MovieLabs and the Entertainment Merchant's Association (EMA), for example, recently released Version 1.0 of the EMA Metadata specification, covering information delivered from publishers to retailers (http://www.entmerch.org/ema_metadata_.html). What is typically missing from the various public metadata documents/specifications are details on how content providers should actually construct metadata. This document begins to scratch the surface on that topic -- tackling first and foremost, descriptive metadata (much of what the EMA specification calls "Basic Metadata"). Our goal in writing this document was to provide a set of best practices, based on the combined wisdom of the metadata experts who produce and distribute digital media for the leading Hollywood studios. -
