The first congress of GSS was in 1997 and it contributed considerably to the promotion of genetics in Slovenia and laid down solid foundations for the future activities of the Society. Three years later the second congress of GSS was organized and was named Genetika 2000. The congress was a great success as it reached high »scientific ex- cellence« and the participation nearly doubled. In addition the year 2000 was an important year for geneticists since the sequencing of human genome was completed giving good reason for celebration. The congress Genetika 2003 was marked by 50th anniversary of momentous discovery of the structure of DNA as well as with the rapid advances of »-omic« research. This was clearly reflected through excellent congress contributions and organisation of an even today very actual round table on ethical questions in genetics. The tangible impact of the advances in genetics in particular in genomic science and biotechnology will make at- tendance at Genetika 2006 essential for genetic scientists as well as for health professionals, toxicologists, biotech- nologists and alike. Genetika 2006 reflects rapid research advances of Slovenian geneticists, which can be seen form excellent contributions divided into seven thematic sessions. The broad scope of the congress will enable the participants to meet and exchange views and experience with colleges from Slovenia and numerous other countries. More than 130 contributions will be presented as invited lectures, oral and poster presentations. Particularly out- standing is the young researchers contest for the »Golden Chromosome« Award that is being presented by the GSS. We look forward to their presentations! We would like to thank the members of Programme and Organizing committees for their contribution to the prepa- ration of the sound scientific programme and enjoyable meeting. The sponsors' contributions have made the event possible and they are gratefully acknowledged. Finally, we thank all the congress participants for their valuable contribution to the scientific recognition and success of Genetika 2006. Welcome to Genetika 2006! Metka Filipič President of the Organizing committee of Genetika 2006 and President of Genetic Society of Slovenia Damjan Glavač President of The Slovenian Society of Human Genetics Genetika 2006 DOBRODOŠLI NA GENETIKI 2006 Kongres Genetika 2006, ki ga organizirata Slovensko genetsko društvo (SGD) in Slovensko društvo za humano genetiko (SSHG) je najpomembnejše srečanje slovenskih genetikov in se odvija vsake tri leta. CAVENDER1 AND ROBERT RUSH MILLER2 Abstract.-A new species of salmonid fish is described from an unconsolidated sand deposit close to the present shoreline of Lake Chapala at Ajijic, Jalisco, Mexico. Because of the superficial nature of the deposit the age of the fossil is believed to be Pleistocene. Additional salmonid remains from the lake bottom at Ajijic are associated with Pleistocene mammalian fossils. Osteological details of the fossil cranium indicate the new species is related to Western North American representatives of the genus Salmo.

Pustovrh et al. Genetics Selection Evolution 2014, 46:7 Genetics http://www.gsejournal.org/content/46/1/7 Selection Evolution RESEARCH Open Access Molecular phylogeny of Salmo of the western Balkans, based upon multiple nuclear loci Gašper Pustovrh, Aleš Snoj and Simona Sušnik Bajec* A correction to this article has been published: Genetics Selection Evolution 2014, 46:21 Abstract Background: Classification of species within the genus Salmo is still a matter of discussion due to their high level of diversity and to the low power of resolution of mitochondrial (mt)DNA-based phylogeny analyses that have been traditionally used in evolutionary studies of the genus. We apply a new marker system based on nuclear (n)DNA loci to present a novel view of the phylogeny of Salmo representatives and we compare it with the mtDNA-based phylogeny. Methods: Twenty-two nDNA loci were sequenced for 76 individuals of the brown trout complex: Salmo trutta (Danubian, Atlantic, Adriatic, Mediterranean and Duero mtDNA lineages), Salmo marmoratus (marble trout), Salmo obtusirostris (softmouth trout), and Salmo ohridanus (Ohrid belvica or belushka). Sequences were phylogenetically analyzed using maximum-likelihood and Bayesian Inference methods. The divergencetimeofthemajorclades was estimated using the program BEAST. Results: The existence of five genetic units i.e. S. salar, S. ohridanus, S. obtusirostris, S. marmoratus and the S. trutta complex, including its major phylogenetic lineages was confirmed. Contrary to previous observations, S. obtusirostris was foundtobesistertotheS. trutta complex and the S. marmoratus clade rather than to the S. ohridanus clade. Reticulate evolution of S. obtusirostris was confirmed and a time for its pre-glacial origin suggested.

  • Trout and Char of Central and Southern Europe and Northern Africa
12 Trout and Char of Central and Southern Europe and Northern Africa Javier Lobón-Cerviá, Manu Esteve, Patrick Berrebi, Antonino Duchi, Massimo Lorenzoni, Kyle A. Young Introduction !e area of central and southern Europe, the Mediterranean, and North Africa spans a wide range of climates from dry deserts to wet forests and temperate maritime to high alpine. !e geologic diversity, glacial history, and long human history of the region have interacted with broad climatic gradients to shape the historical and cur- rent phylogeography of the region’s native trout and char. !e current distributions and abundances of native species are determined in large part by their fundamental niches (i.e., clean, cold water with high dissolved oxygen). Brown Trout Salmo trutta are relatively common and widespread in the northern and mountainous areas of the region but occur in isolated headwater populations in the warmer southern areas of the region. !ese southern areas provided glacial refugia for salmonids and today har- bor much of the region’s phylogenetic diversity. Despite relatively narrow ecologi- cal requirements in terms of water quality, native and invasive trout and char occur throughout the region’s rivers, lakes, estuaries, and coastal waters. Despite having only a single widely recognized native trout species, the region’s range of environments has produced a remarkable diversity of life histories ranging from dwarf, stunted, short and long-lived, small- and large-sized, stream-resident, lake-resident, fluvial potamo- dromous, adfluvial potamodromous, and anadromous (see Chapter 7). Only one trout and one char are native to the region, Brown Trout and Alpine Char Salvelinus umbla.
