I have just lost my Dad, some of you knew him while I was part the Eisenmarche, he played under the name Brother Hebare – it was a death after a long illness, sad but not tragic. Nevertheless, it still required and deserved my time. (Should any of you who knew him want details, please contact me privately) Apparently Christmas is not a good time to try to pick up the strings of an office. When I hand it on, I will try to make sure I have a Deputy who wants the job months be- fore so they can be trained! (You could all start thinking about that – it is never to soon! : ) ) That being said, I must point out my eSentinel Deputy, Lord Þórbjórn Bjórnsson has saved the day – without his support you would not be reading this. Please send him much praise! May you all enjoy the Yule Season – may you all have peace, and family and friends! Meredith Curia Minutes *A&S -* The categories for Bardic are being reworked. *Chatelaine* –This has been a quite quarter. H-Folk Conference: Folklore and Old Norse Mythology, 27.–28. November 2017, Helsinki, Finland. Discussion published by Mr Frog on Friday, September 22, 2017 We are pleased to announce that the international conference Folklore and Old Norse Mythology will be held 27th–28th November 2017 in Helsinki, Finland. This is the twelfth annual ‘Aarhus Mythology Conference’, as it has become commonly known. Across especially the past decade, research on Old Norse mythology has exhibited a boom of interest in both folklore collected in recent centuries and in perspectives and insights offered by today’s folklore research. Folklore and Old Norse Mythology has been organized to meet this growing interest by gathering specialists from a wide range of disciplines to share and discuss their views and approaches. Earlier scholarship had seen the value of more recent folklore in terms of continuities from an earlier time. This remains a topic of interest, approached through the frameworks of today’s methodologies, yet a look at the presentations of the event reveal that there has been shift in attention and concern. Traditions in the background of Old Norse sources are becoming viewed in terms of folklore, looking at Norse mythology through that lens while capitalizing on the analogical value of more richly-documented traditions for approaching mythology in the Old Norse world. The diverse perspectives and approached brought together in this event reflect new directions in thinking with the potential for a critical mass of discussion that could have a

  • Number Symbolism in Old Norse Literature
Háskóli Íslands Hugvísindasvið Medieval Icelandic Studies Number Symbolism in Old Norse Literature A Brief Study Ritgerð til MA-prófs í íslenskum miðaldafræðum Li Tang Kt.: 270988-5049 Leiðbeinandi: Torfi H. Tulinius September 2015 Acknowledgements I would like to thank firstly my supervisor, Torfi H. Tulinius for his confidence and counsels which have greatly encouraged my writing of this paper. Because of this confidence, I have been able to explore a domain almost unstudied which attracts me the most. Thanks to his counsels (such as his advice on the “Blóð-Egill” Episode in Knýtlinga saga and the reading of important references), my work has been able to find its way through the different numbers. My thanks also go to Haraldur Bernharðsson whose courses on Old Icelandic have been helpful to the translations in this paper and have become an unforgettable memory for me. I‟m indebted to Moritz as well for our interesting discussion about the translation of some paragraphs, and to Capucine and Luis for their meticulous reading. Any fault, however, is my own. Abstract It is generally agreed that some numbers such as three and nine which appear frequently in the two Eddas hold special significances in Norse mythology. Furthermore, numbers appearing in sagas not only denote factual quantity, but also stand for specific symbolic meanings. This tradition of number symbolism could be traced to Pythagorean thought and to St. Augustine‟s writings. But the result in Old Norse literature is its own system influenced both by Nordic beliefs and Christianity. This double influence complicates the intertextuality in the light of which the symbolic meanings of numbers should be interpreted.

It seeks to establish the relationship of the various valkyrja reflexes of the culture under study with other supernatural females (particularly the dísir) through the close and careful examination of primary source material, thereby proposing a new model of base supernatural femininity for the late Iron Age. The study then goes on to examine how the valkyrjur themselves deviate from this ground state, interrogating various aspects and features associated with them in skaldic, Eddic, prose and iconographic source material as seen through the lens of the hall-based warrior elite, before presenting a new understanding of valkyrja phenomena in this social context: that valkyrjur were used as instruments to propagate the pre-existing social structures of the culture that created and maintained them throughout the late Iron Age.

WAGNER AND THE VOLSUNGS None of Wagner’s works is more closely linked with Old Norse, and more especially Old Icelandic, culture. It would be carrying coals to Newcastle if I tried to go further into the significance of the incom- parable eddic poems. I will just mention that on my first visit to Iceland I was allowed to gaze on the actual manuscript, even to leaf through it . It is worth noting that Richard Wagner possessed in his library the same Icelandic–German dictionary that is still used today. His copy bears clear signs of use. This also bears witness to his search for the meaning and essence of the genuinely mythical, its very foundation. The Goddess: Myths of the Great Mother Description The Goddess is all around us: Her face is reflected in the burgeoning new growth of every ensuing spring; her power is evident in the miracle of conception and childbirth and in the newborn’s cry as it searches for the nurturing breast; we glimpse her in the alluring beauty of youth, in the incredible power of sexual attraction, in the affection of family gatherings, and in the gentle caring of loved ones as they leave the mortal world. The Goddess is with us in the everyday miracles of life, growth, and death which always have surrounded us and always will, and this ubiquity speaks to the enduring presence and changing masks of the universal power people have always recognized in their lives.

Viking art, Snorri Sturluson and some recent metal detector finds. Fornvännen 113. Stockholm. This paper seeks to contribute to a recent debate on the use of private metal detect- ing and its value within archaeology. Specifically it explores – by presenting some recently found Viking Period artefacts from Denmark – how private metal detect- ing can contribute to our understanding of Viking minds. By bringing together the myths as related by Snorri Sturluson in the early 13th century with the artefacts, I argue that thanks to private metal detecting through the last decades, our ability to recognise Viking art as narrative art has improved substantially.
