Date:…………………………………………………….. 2 Abstract The term ‗underground music‘, in my account, connects various forms of music-making that exist largely outside ‗mainstream‘ cultural discourse, such as Drone Metal, Free Improvisation, Power Electronics, and DIY Noise, amongst others. Its connotations of concealment and obscurity indicate what I argue to be the music‘s central tenets of cultural reclusion, political independence, and aesthetic experiment. In response to a lack of scholarly discussion of this music, my thesis provides a cultural, political, and aesthetic mapping of the underground, whose existence as a coherent entity is being both argued for and ‗mapped‘ here. Outlining the historical context, but focusing on the underground in the digital age, I use a wide range of interdisciplinary research methodologies , including primary interviews, musical analysis, and a critical engagement with various pertinent theoretical sources. In my account, the underground emerges as a marginal, ‗antermediated‘ cultural ‗scene‘ based both on the web and in large urban centres, the latter of whose concentration of resources facilitates the growth of various localised underground scenes. I explore the radical anti-capitalist politics of many underground figures, whilst also examining their financial ties to big business and the state(s). This contradiction is critically explored, with three conclusions being drawn. First, the underground is shown in Part II to be so marginal as to escape, in effect, post- Fordist capitalist subsumption.

Pauline Knuckey 2017 Abstract While historical film audience research has flourished internationally since the 1980s, New Zealand’s historical movie-going audiences have largely been ignored. This thesis seeks to increase our understanding of this once phenomenally popular pastime by investigating the movie-going habits of New Zealanders during the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. Using a multi- methodological approach, I draw on 600 survey responses, official statistics and reports, and archival material to ascertain changes in movie attendance and preference over these three decades, and the reasons for those changes. The examination of film exhibition and its practices is key to the investigation. These decades were ones of significant societal change, not least because of the introduction of television in the 1960s, which saw a rapid decrease in the number of movie-goers and led to a change in movie-going culture from ‘going to the pictures’ to ‘going to a picture’. Movie- going ceased to be a habit for many New Zealanders and instead became more of an event, assisted by a change in Hollywood production from hundreds of movies a year, to a few ‘blockbuster’ event-status films.

Olmsted (Department of History, University of California, Davis) Published on H-Diplo (January, 2002) Spooks, Rats, and War Criminals Spooks, Rats, and War Criminals Jim Milano's memoir of his years as an Army intelligence officer in post-World War II Austria is a fast- paced, rollicking yarn of intrepid spooks and the assorted hookers, crooks, and informers they knew and used. The book is an engaging account of the trials and triumphs of intelligence professionals in the early, dangerous years of the cold war. However, Milano's glorification of secrecy and law- breaking--not to mention his outright contempt for elected and appointed U.S. officials--raises troubling questions about the rights and responsibilities of the American government's secret warriors. Milano was a young Army intelligence officer in Salzburg during the early part of the Allied occupation of Austria. During the war, he had used his fluent Italian to debrief prisoners of war captured during the invasions of North Africa and Italy. In 1945, he was put in charge of American military intelligence efforts against the Soviets in occupied Austria. The "rat line" of the title refers to his efforts to smuggle deserters from the Red Army to South America.

In a period when the expression of controversial ideas was dangerous, Goldman insisted on her right to challenge convention. She was among the most prominent advocates of labor's right to organize, reproductive rights, sexual freedom, freedom of speech, and freedom of the individual. Goldman left an intriguing body of personal papers, including correspondence and writings; and her activities generated extensive newspaper coverage, government surveillance reports, and legal papers. The documents in this teaching unit are drawn from a massive archive collected by the Emma Goldman Papers Project at the University of California (Berkeley). They are organized into five themes or topics: (1) "Immigration"; (2) "Freedom of Expression"; (3) "Women's Rights"; (4) "Anti-militarism"; and (5) "Art and Literature of Social Change." The topics can be taught in any sequence.
