Obviously, with the Kunjen people themselves: tragically, the Kunjen friends who made the most generous contributions to this work have all passed away.     34 Emergency language documentation teams: the Cape York Peninsula experience Clair Hill1 and Patrick McConvell2 Abstract Language revitalisation and endangered language documentation are complementary endeavours – they feed into each other and both benefit from the support of the other. This idea is at the heart of a community teams approach called Emergency Language Documentation Teams (McConvell et al. 2005). This paper will review the underpinnings of this idea and discuss the successes and difficulties encountered while applying it in the Cape York Peninsula region. The findings of the Cape York Peninsula Language Documentation project pilot discussed in this paper include that informal approaches to both language worker training and language learning were, across the board, far more successful than more formal approaches (including one-on-one versions of master–apprentice schemes). We also found that the project approach was more difficult in situations where there were more social and linguistic divisions and heterogeneity. There is some irony in this given that often in the Australian context linguistic homogeneity within a speech community can itself be a result of language shift and language loss. Project approach Many of the original Cape York Peninsula (CYP) languages are no longer spoken, and many more are on the brink of loss. We break up the notion of NP constituency into a set of concrete typological parameters, and analyse these across a sample of 100 languages, representing a significant portion of diversity on the Australian continent. We show that there is little evidence to support general ideas about the absence of NP structures, and we argue that it makes more sense to typologize languages on the basis of where and how they allow “classic” NP construal, and how this fits into the broader range of construals in the nominal domain.     The diachrony of initial consonant loss in Cape York Peninsula (Australia) Jean-Christophe Verstraete (University of Leuven) This paper revisits the diachrony of initial consonant loss, a type of sound change that is found in several areas in Australia (Hale 1976a, Alpher 1976, Blevins 2001), but is rare from a world-wide perspective (Blevins 2007). So far, the literature has mainly analysed initial loss as the outcome of a gradual process of initial weaking, caused by a shift of stress away from the initial syllable (Alpher 1976, Blevins & Marmion 1994). In this paper, I use data from a set of eight Paman (Pama-Nyungan) languages of Cape York Peninsula (Australia), which illustrate not just loss of initial consonants, but also initial consonant lenition and the loss of entire initial syllables. Using these data, I argue that (i) the classic model of gradual initial weakening needs to be supplemented with more abrupt mechanisms, specifically analogy-driven loss based on synchronic alternations, and contact-induced loss, and (ii) the causal link with stress shift needs to be refined, and in some languages loss of initial consonants in part of the lexicon may itself cause changes in the stress system. Cape York Peninsula, in Australia’s northeast, has several ‘hotspots’ of initial loss (Alpher 1976, Sutton 1976), e.g. in the north and on the central east coast. This paper focuses on the eastern hotspot in the Princess Charlotte Bay area, specifically eight languages from three different subgroups of Paman, viz. Middle Paman (Umpithamu, Yintyingka, Umpila), Lamalamic (Lamalama, Umbuygamu, Rimanggudinhma) and Thaypanic (Kuku Thaypan, Aghu Tharrnggala).

  • 3. Historical Phonology
    -38- 3. HISTORICAL PHONOLOGY Because this thesis is primarily concerned with morphological reconstruction, detailed phonological reconstructions fall outside the scope of investigation. Nonetheless, it is important to make a few remarks regarding the sound changes which may be traced, since many of these changes affect morphemes as well as whole words. Some phonological changes will simply be noted and very briefly described; others, such as the voicing contrasts (section 3.2.4), are important for the reconstruction of forms in this thesis and will be discussed at greater length. 3.1 LITERATURE REVIEW The first and only reconstruction of the phonology of Proto-Karnic was undertaken by Professor Peter Austin and published in 1990; this is Austin (1990a). Austin reconstructs over 300 lexical items for the Lake Eyre Basin and draws a family tree based on lexical retentions and common sound changes.30 In addition, there are several sound changes which do not fit the family tree, and are assumed to have diffused. Austin also evaluates the evidence for the inclusion of Arabana-Wangkangurru as Karnic, and concludes that this language is not part of the Karnic subgroup. Austin also includes a few of grammatical forms, including pronouns and the pronominal accusative marker -nha. Useful as this paper is, there are a number of faults. First there is a matter of internal grouping of languages. Yandruwandha and Yawarrawarka are clearly more similar to each other than either are to Mithaka (since they are regarded by a number of people as dialects of the same language31), yet Austin does not group them together (recall figure 1.2 on page 10).

The inferred ancestral state reconstructions led to their striking claim of ‘extensive evidence for the loss (as well as gain) of color terms’, as well as the expected ‘broad support for the most influential theory of color term development’ based on the World Color Survey [Kay P, Berlin B, MaffiL, Merrifield WR, Cook R (2009) CSLI lecture notes 159, Stanford, CA]. However their inference is invalidated by the method for selecting the vocabulary data, its patchiness, and their method’s assumption that every unknown or missing datum is a true absence. The naming of colors ‘has long been a topic of interest in the study of human culture and cognition’, and Haynie and Bowern (H&B) [54] employ promising computational phylogenetic methods to test the standard view of color terminology structure, epitomized in the World Color Survey (WCS) [71], that ‘the attested range of color-naming systems in language results from evolution along highly constrained pathways’. H&B’s main finding was not surprising: ‘general support for the WCS model of color term development, but with more nuance’.

    CHAPTER 19 Kurtjar placenames PAUL BLACK Introduction This is a study of placenames recorded during research on the Kurtjar language of south-western Cape York Peninsula in the late 1970s. After introducing the language and its speakers’ knowledge of placenames (see below), the paper discusses those names for which etymologies can be proposed, including ones which are homophonous to common nouns (see ‘Names from common nouns’) as well as those formed by compounding and/or affixation (see under headings ‘Names formed as compounds’ to ‘Descriptive clauses’). Especially numerous are ones involving the many allomorphs of the locative suffix, including one found only fossilised in placenames (see ‘Names formed with a locative suffix’). Descriptive clauses used to designate a few sites are also discussed, whether or not they represent proper names (see ‘Descriptive clauses’). The nature of the names is quite similar to that in nearby languages, as will be illustrated by the occasional citation of names from Koko-Bera, to the north, although the unusual phonological development of Kurtjar poses special problems for the analysis of some names (see ‘Notes on phonology and transcription’). The language and the data The traditional territory of the Kurtjar is in south-western Cape York Peninsula, along the Gulf of Carpentaria coast from near the Staaten River to south of the Smithburn River; the accompanying map (Figure 19.1) is a modified version of one in a manuscript by Black and Gilbert (1996). The data discussed here was gathered during a general study of the Kurtjar language between 1974 and 1979. At this time it seemed that the language was no longer in general use, although there were still about a dozen people, mostly elderly, who could speak it with some fluency.

    Keynote Abstracts Referential functions and the construction of prominence profiles Professor Petra Schumacher, University of Cologne (Monday, Dec 10th, 2 pm, H2-16) Referential expressions are essential ingredients for information processing. Speakers use particular referential forms to convey different discourse functions and thus shape the 'prominence profile' that organizes referents in discourse representation. The prominence profile, i.e. the ranking of the referential candidates, feeds into expectations for upcoming discourse referents and interacts with the choice of referential forms (e.g., less informative referential forms are more likely to refer to more prominent referents). The prominence profile can further be changed as discourse unfolds, i.e. certain referential expressions such as demonstratives can raise the prominence status of their referents. The talk discusses various cues that contribute to the dynamic construction of prominence profiles and presents evidence for the different referential functions from behavioral and event-related potential studies. Manifestations of complexity in grammar and discourse Professor Walter Bisang, University of Mainz (Wednesday, Dec 12th, 9 am, H2-16) Linguistic discussions on complexity come in various shades. Some models are based on cognitive costs and difficulty of acquisition, others look at the properties of the form by which grammatical distinctions are expressed and connected, yet another group of linguists focus on recursion and merge and, finally, complexity can be measured in terms of algorithmic information theory. What is common to the above approaches is their concentration on linguistic form. In my presentation, I argue that form is only one side of complexity. A Typological and Phylogenetic Analysis of the Names of Pama-Nyungan Languages Katherine Rosenberg Advisor: Claire Bowern Submitted to the faculty of the Department of Linguistics in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts Yale University May 2018 Abstract The naming strategies used by Pama-Nyungan languages to refer to themselves show remarkably similar properties across the family. Names with similar mean- ings and constructions pop up across the family, even in languages that are not particularly closely related, such as Pitta Pitta and Mathi Mathi, which both feature reduplication, or Guwa and Kalaw Kawaw Ya which are both based on their respective words for ‘west.’ This variation within a closed set and similar- ity among related languages suggests the development of language names might be phylogenetic, as other aspects of historical linguistics have been shown to be; if this were the case, it would be possible to reconstruct the naming strategies used by the various ancestors of the Pama-Nyungan languages that are currently known. This is somewhat surprising, as names wouldn’t necessarily operate or develop in the same way as other aspects of language; this thesis seeks to de- termine whether it is indeed possible to analyze the names of Pama-Nyungan languages phylogenetically. In order to attempt such an analysis, however, it is necessary to have a principled classification system capable of capturing both the similarities and differences among various names. While people have noted some similarities and tendencies in Pama-Nyungan names before (McConvell 2006; Sutton 1979), no one has addressed this comprehensively.
