Plus 10 Points Bronze Quality Club– Pambula AFC BERMAGUI BREAKERS CRASHING OVER DIGGERS

THE Bermagui Breakers first grade Aussie rules squad had Merimbula on the back foot early on Saturday. The Breakers defeated the Diggers 15.11 (101) to 8.11 (59). The Breakers kicked a flurry of five goals in the opening quarter to double Merimbula‟s score. Breakers coach Brent Ohlin said the team was delighted with the win after a close chal- lenge. “It‟s a fantastic feeling around the club, we spoke about it heavily over the last couple of weeks,” Ohlin said. “The boys pushed hard and we‟re happy to get the result.” In the second quarter, the Diggers regained a lot of possession and nearly levelled the score. “It was a very open style of footy,” Ohlin said. “If we cleared the ruck we ran away with it, if they cleared it they took it away. “The whole first half was definitely a battle of the midfields.” Luke Kingston was a standout for the Breakers, winning plenty of contests, while Kane Fowler also impressed. The Breakers surged ahead at the third quarter break to lead by about 40 points, but inju- ries were taking a toll on the squad. “We didn‟t have a bench left because of a few injuries. “We had a bit of a chat at the break and we knew it was going to be tough.” Ohlin said he backed the Breakers‟ kicking ability and opted for a physical final quarter. “I said to the guys „let‟s go man-to-man‟. “Going back to a more contested style of footy play was a real game changer. “In the final quarter we kicked six goals to none,” he said. The win sees the Breakers rising the SCAFL ladder to a clear second place. “We wanted to consolidate our position in the top three, but the win puts us clear in sec- ond,” Ohlin said. The Breakers are now looking forward to their match against the Bega Bombers. “We‟re very confident, but Bega‟s been in really good form of late. “We‟ll expect a good fight, but hopefully we‟ll come out on top.” After not being able to field a side last year, Ohlin said he hoped to encourage footy fans to back the Breakers. “We‟ve come back from the dead so to speak. “This could be a really good time for the club coming up the ladder. “We just want to encourage people to get down to the footy,” he said. SEA EAGLES KNOCK WIND FROM WHALERS' SAILS

Eden Whalers defeated by the Tathra Sea Eagles 23.12 (150) to 10.8 (68) Numbers woes are still plagu- ing the Eden Whalers, which impacted on Saturday‟s game. However, late arrivals and some spares from the Bega club saw numbers strong enough to get the game going. Club stalwart Harry Weatherman said the opening passages of play were even. “The game started out with the ball moving quickly up and down the oval,” Weath- erman said. “Both teams were scoring early, with the Whalers through Nic Smith.” Unfortunately for the home side, momentum shifted to the Sea Eagles. “After the frenzied opening, it was all Tathra and they were making Eden work hard, scoring the next five goals.” However, Brent Kelly fired through a late goal for the Whalers and kept the Sea Ea- gles within reach. The second quarter saw a renewed effort from the Whalers. Weatherman said Ryan Turnbull enjoyed his role as captain and led by example through the midfield. “With the hard work from the captain, Matt Creswick was able to score a goal,” Weatherman said. Jaydn Spivey joined in shortly after when he was awarded a 50-metre penalty. He had the range to the big posts and slotted a goal neatly between them. Eden got within just three goals midway through the second quarter, but the Sea Ea- gles surged ahead again to keep the margin around 40 points. Weatherman said the Whalers were determined to not be embarrassed by last year‟s premiers. “The Whalers had a mission to kick as many goals as possible and not let the score blow out.” Unfortunately, Tathra‟s experience shone through in a dominant second half per- formance. The Sea Eagles piled on more goals in spite of valiant defence from the Eden backs. The margin widened to 80 points in the visitors‟ favour by the full-time siren. The Whalers will be under the pump again when they travel north to take on the Pambula Panthers this weekend. Junior Player of the Week

Senior Match of the Round With the Narooma Lions going into the next three rounds with a possibility of claiming three wins the Lions will look to travel to Tathra and come away with 4 points. Hav- ing pushed Pambula during the last round the Lions will look to continue that form against the Sea Eagles. Although a good chance, Tathra will be a tough proposition with Tathra rounding into form towards the end of the season with the possibility of closing the gap on third placed Merimbula to 4 points. This will be a tight contest with the winner gaining mo- mentum towards the finals series. Player to Watch: Luke Talty (Narooma Lions). With Luke ‘Red Dog’ Talty among the best during rep weekend, it appears he has gained the confidence to continue his good form with the aim of getting his Lions into the finals in 2014. Junior Match of the Round After the Bega under 16’s claimed their second win of the season against an undermanned Merimbula Diggers last weekend, Merimbula will be looking to reverse last weekends result when they travel to the Bega Showgrounds this weekend, with a strong and healthy line up. Bega will be looking to continue their recent good form having beaten Merimbula and Narooma the two top teams in the past 2 rounds. Player to Watch: Jackson Whity (Bega Bombers). If the Bega Bombers are able to find Jack- son in space, their is no one in the league capable of catching this jet, with Jackson regularly finding space to run during the last round. With a deadly set shot, getting players to the con- test to spoil is a must for the diggers.
