Plus 10 Points Bronze Quality Club– Pambula AFC SCAFL's Stingrays see the bright side

THE Sapphire Coast AFL (SCAFL) Stingrays lost to the South Coast on the weekend, but the un- der 12s won their age division. Senior squad assistant coach Luke Taylor said he was proud of SCAFL’s efforts. “It was really impressive for the under 12s to win their age division,” Taylor said. Meanwhile, the seniors were not taking a loss to heart after losing 11.2 (68) to the South Coast’s 17.14 (116). “I thought our boys did really well. “The South Coast has been playing together for three or four years, while we have only just re- established ourselves,” he said. Head coach Adrian Pavese was unable to attend on the weekend, and Taylor thanked Paul Noack who helped from a coaching perspective on the day. “He’s heavily involved with the under 12s and he was already busy, so we really appreciate him jumping in and it’s good to have people like him involved.” Taylor said the team was in the match for three quarters, with the South Coast pushing ahead in the final period. “Our tackling pressure was some of the best I have seen and our ability to be in every contest was second to none. “The average age on our team is 20 or 21, we have a lot of young guys who are just starting their career.” Bermagui’s Brent Ohlin kicked five goals, while Bega Bomber Scott Hay impressed on the field. “To kick five in a representative scenario is fantastic,” Taylor said. “Scotty Hay was outstanding, he is just a freak of a player. “He plays on instinct, he dominated on the weekend and it will be very interesting to watch him develop.” Meanwhile, Pambula Panthers midfielders Aaron Proctor and Justin Pilgrim excelled with their marks and contests of the ball. “They were excellent in the midfield, Justin and Aaron were both in contested marks and all over the ball.” However, conditions were not ideal for play, with gusty winds up to 40km an hour taking its toll on the Stingrays’ shots at goal. Unfortunately, the squad’s captain Jack Murphy was injured just after half time and had to come off the field. “Not having his leadership and his quality around the ball hurt us a bit,” Taylor said. Despite the loss, Taylor said he was really happy with the performance and looked forward to working with the rep team in future. “We set the bar and now we just have to build on it again next year. “After playing the game, I think all the guys will put their hand up again. “It’s another big tick for the league,” he said.

REPRESENTATIVE PHOTOS OF THE WEEK

REP FOOTBALL A HUGE SUCCESS

FROM June 27 to 29, 88 of the Sapphire Coast's best players took to the field in Nowra to showcase the strength of the Sapphire Coast AFL with some brilliant results.

With players competing in the under 12's, 14's, 16's and senior grade, some outstanding football was on display for all involved with some great individual and team performances on display throughout the carnival.

With teams converging on Nowra from the Shoalhaven, Illawarra, Central West/Sth Riverina, the Central Coast and Newcastle the Stingrays got off to a brilliant start winning all three junior games against Central West/ Sth Riverina under lights.

Day two of the carnival started with the under 14's and under 16's being defeated by the might of Illawarra before the under 12's were able to produce some inspirational football to defeat the Illawarra. With their loss to the Illawarra the under 14's fin- ished in a fantastic 5th position.

The main attraction for the Saturday's games was the senior men's fixture where the Stingray's were edged out by the South Coast AFL 11.2-68 to 17.14-166 with Scott Hay winning Sapphire Coast man of the match honours.

The semi-final’s started with the under 12 stingrays defeating the Central Coast 24 to 9 which set up a tantalising final with carnival new comers Newcastle. The good run of semi-final results unfortunately couldn't continue with the under 16's unable to take advantage of a strong breeze in the first quarter and eventually beaten by Illa- warra with the boys finishing in third place.

With the under 12's looking to reverse their 2013 final result, the stingrays started strongly and were able to keep Newcastle at bay to claim the 2014 under 12 champi- onship.

Congratulations and thankyou to all coaches, umpires, team managers and parents involved in the weekend carnival. The 2015 carnival will take place on of June 26, 27 and 28.

Senior Match of the Round The senior match of the round features Bermagui and Merimbula with both teams looking to consolidate second spot on the ladder to gain that vital first round home advantage during the finals series. With Merimbula carrying a number of injuries and their captain Jack Murphy in doubt this weekend, there is no better time then now for Bermagui to knock off one of the leagues top teams and show that they mean business in 2014. Player to Watch: Kane Fowler. Having kicked a number of goals in 2014 and gaining a week off Kane will look to continue his strong goal kicking form in Round 11. Junior Match of the Round Narooma v Bega Under 13’s. The young Narooma team will be looking to se- cure their first win when they face the Bega Bombers at home. With good numbers in Auskick and intra 10’s for both clubs the under 13’s will be aiming to show the youngest footballers how the game is played when the two teams lock horns at Bill Smyth Memorial Oval. Player to Watch: Thomas Hodge. Having won the under 12 carnival with the Srtingray’s last weekend Tom will be looking to carry that winning feeling to the Narooma Lions. Look for his ferocious tackling and tenacity in this one.
