One of the most interesting parts at the dyno shop involved some classic “shade tree mechanic” work. After my aborted first run because it would- n’t even run under load, I moved the car out of the shop to try to figure out what to do next. On a sug- gestion from Greg (or was it Bobert?) we pushed the car under a tree to get some shade. After find- ing out the accelerator pump jets were waaaay too big, and not having any others, Rick Knapp “modified” them by squeezing the holes smaller with a pair of pliers. High tech, huh? Who needs a shop and thousands of dollars worth of tools and parts when there’s a tall tree around and you have a screwdriver and a pair of pliers! They work so well that I’m not even going to bother getting any others that have actual sized holes. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it ! By the way, thanks again Rick, Scott, and Doug for getting the Vee running right!

I’m having fun - are you?

A few minutes of pasting “cones” and I delays and the start time became somewhat later than many of was hopeful I could get an interesting course to fit the space the participants wanted. available, including the option for two laps (Figure 2).

I believe the background on this event’s course design might be a bit interesting. I have thought for quite some time that existing race courses could be the basis for really interesting autocross courses. I have been told that Rob Roytas might try to use a Formula 1 course as a starting point for one. Well, this event is evidence that it can work.

I chose the layout of the new Mid America course (Figure 1, ignore the compass, it fit Lot N best with north to the top). I do enjoy the thought of a nice long straight, but common sense and the Safety Gurus won’t allow that. I knew it could be changed to a slalom, or some kind of kink could be added to keep speeds reasonable.

The pre-event review by some knowledgeable individuals highlighted some areas which would need attention, but all courses need some adjustment from the drawing. I waited for Sunday morning, glad to have at least something ready.

I towed the trailer in about 7:10, and there were two small red cars parked close together in the area that would become grid. The Event Safety Steward, Rob Foster, and the Regional Exec and his better half, Dave and Lu Geis, were already there. As we began unloading the trailer, Mark Scamahorn arrived with his trailered RX2. Lucky for us Mark was able to fill in as the flatbed to toss cones from. Thanks, Mark! Seems like Dave (Continued on page 8)

Dave has provided the cone-tossing platform for so “This course flows well.” – Richard Prestage many events that his deserves a rest. “I like your course.” – Mike Scofield.

I know major realignment was necessary. my best run was the one during which I shifted 5 times.

Once all the changes were made for safety, driver help, and a So the day progressed with impressive driving and interesting smoother finish with more runoff room, the course looked cars all around. I understand Rob Roytas is writing an article something like Figure 3. However, the general layout still about his drive in Dave Trimble’s Cobra. What a RIDE that looks a little like the original “real” road course. must be! It was great to see the whaletail Porsche of Rob After the timing equipment was set up and tested, we were able Santore out also. Seems like he had some fun at my August ’01 event. Especially the finish, I think. And I have some per- sonal favorites – like the NSX driven by Gary Whipple, Ken Neely’s S2000, and any of the Corvettes (I like Bow-Ties). And our sole CP car, the MSE ’82 Trans Am driven by Art Martinez and Amo Carrasco, is about as “ground pounder” as can be fielded these days, and a work of “art” to boot, no pun intended.

Several positive comments were made about some less exotic cars, also. The ’02 Nissan Sentra driven by Dominic Sevart is an interesting SE-R model. It placed very well for a bone- stock, first time out street-tire car. Another vehicle of note was the ’69 Austin Healy Sprite driven by both William Preheim and Greg McGeehee. Did you see how narrow those tires were?

We were once again able to welcome several new autocrossers. We had a lot of entries I did not recognize, and senility is not the cause – I haven’t made enough events this year. I noticed a pair of Pontiac Grand Prix (one of them supercharged), an ‘01 Mustang Cobra, and a pair of Contours, with Tim Harmon fin- ishing very well in his. It was great to see so many ‘Stangs, Integras, , Bimmers, and Miatas mixing it up out there, whether regulars or newbies.

And once again, local rivalries got some buzz. STS had John Dolocek and Gary Gaither finish about .23 hundredths apart, and the Jim Harrison – David Green rivalry for FTD gave us quite a show. Jim can really handle that ‘vette, and soo-o-o smooth.
