2022 Exhibition Program Application Information 2022 EXHIBITION PROGRAM APPLICATION INFORMATION ABOUT US Mundaring Arts Centre (MAC Inc.), is an independent, not-for-profit community organisation that develops and promotes high quality arts through a range of exhibitions, educational programs, community activities and events. Founded in 1979 by a group of dedicated artists, MAC Inc. is a nationally recognised presenting and producing arts organisation. We aim to contribute to the cultural life of the eastern region of Perth by nurturing creative potential, supporting artists’ skill development and encouraging people of all ages and backgrounds to engage with the arts. We facilitate our exhibition, workshop and residency programs from two cultural hubs, Mundaring Arts Centre (MAC) and Midland Junction Arts Centre (MJAC). EXHIBITION PROGRAM MAC Inc. has a long history of presenting exhibitions that offer something new and stimulating for local audiences and visitors to the eastern region. We develop our exhibition program via internally curated projects, partnerships with arts and community organisations, and through an annual public call for expressions of interest from independent artists and curators to present projects in the MAC and MJAC spaces. Our exhibition program seeks proposals that demonstrate artistic excellence and offer new opportunities for our audiences to engage with art forms and consider the world around them. We welcome exhibition proposals for both cultural hubs from individuals, groups, collaborations, companies, curators, organisations and tertiary art students. We support projects by practitioners at all stages of practice and from all visual art disciplines. Applicants are encouraged to contact the Curator to discuss their project and visit the two cultural hubs to inform their application proposal. SELECTION PROCESS Exhibition applications are assessed by MAC Inc. staff and our Exhibition Committee. To be considered for the 2022 exhibition program, all relevant support material outlined in the application form must be submitted by midnight on the due date: SUNDAY 30 MAY, 2021. Please note: MAC Inc. staff will not be able to provide technical or application support after COB (5pm), Friday 28 May, 2021. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered. Applications and support material will not be returned. All applicants will receive confirmation their application has been received within 5 days of the due date. Proposals will be assessed on the following selection criteria: • Artistic merit and the pursuit of excellence (quality, originality, ingenuity) • Concisely articulated exhibition proposal, rationale and outline • How the proposal enhances the planned exhibition schedule • How the proposal fits MAC Inc.’s Strategic Mission and Vision • Any proposed public/education programs or audience development initiatives Every effort will be made to meet the application preferences of successful applicants, however alternative dates or exhibition spaces may be offered in light of scheduling requirements and programming priorities across the two venues. The 2022 MJAC Artist in Residence program will open for EOIs in July 2021. MUNDARING AND MIDLAND JUNCTION ARTS CENTRES 2022 EXHIBITION APPLICATION INFORMATION MUNDARING ARTS CENTRE Mundaring Arts Centre is situated in the heart of the creative hills community of Mundaring, located 34 km east of Perth on the Great Eastern Highway. The gallery is recognised nationally for best practice community arts and excellence in visual arts. The bespoke gallery spaces are complemented by a shop representing over 200 Western Australian artists and designers. MAC GALLERIES Gallery 1 has approximately 40 linear metres of hanging space with a hanging height of 2.5m. The space is equipped with hanging rails and track lighting. Gallery 2 has approximately 15 linear metres of hanging space with a hanging height of 2.8m. The space is equipped with hanging rails and track lighting. Both galleries have exhibitions programmed concurrently throughout the year. Opening Hours Tuesday to Friday – 10 am to 5 pm Saturday and Sunday – 11 am to 3 pm Closed Mondays and Public Holidays Free entry COSTS AND INCLUSIONS MAC Gallery 1 $1,200 l $1,080 MAC Inc. Members (including GST) • Gallery hire (8 -10 weeks) • MAC Inc. staff assist with exhibition curation, installation and exhibition invigilation • Exhibition material (floor sheet, signage and labelling) • Online exhibition promotion on MAC website and social media sites (no paid advertising) • Media release produced and distributed • E-Invitation emailed to MAC Inc. members, VIPS and mailing list • PDF invitation designed, to be circulated and printed at exhibitors cost • Artwork sales (35% gallery commission) • Insurance, cleaning and utilities • Catering for celebration event (light refreshments) 2 MUNDARING AND MIDLAND JUNCTION ARTS CENTRES 2022 EXHIBITION APPLICATION INFORMATION MIDLAND JUNCTION ARTS CENTRE Midland Junction Arts Centre is located in the heart of Midland, a major rail and road transit junction, about 18 km north-east of the Perth CBD. Midland is the regional centre for the City of Swan that includes the Swan Valley and the Darling Scarp to the east. MJAC’s heritage building houses galleries, artist studios, ceramic and printmaking studios, a 140 seat auditorium and hireable spaces for workshops, meetings and events. MJAC GALLERIES West Gallery has approximately 17 linear metres of hanging space with a hanging height of 2.6m. The space is equipped with hanging rails, a moveable false wall (3 linear metres of hanging space) which can be positioned within the gallery and natural light from the large north facing windows. This gallery adjoins a small room (Project Space) suited for film projections, additional exhibition space or as a shop. East Gallery has approximately 19 linear metres of hanging space with a hanging height of 2.5 m. The space is equipped with hanging rails, a moveable false wall (3 linear metres of hanging space) which can be positioned within the gallery and natural light from the large north facing windows. Veranda Studio is suited to flexible projects including exhibitions, residencies, workshops or pop-up shops. The space has approximately 15 linear metres of hanging space with a hanging height of 3.96 m. Please note: throughout the exhibition period exhibitors are required to invigilate this space. All three spaces have projects programmed concurrently throughout the year. Members (including GST) • Gallery hire (7-10 weeks) • MAC Inc. staff assist with exhibition curation, installation. • Exhibition invigilation is included for the East and West Galleries only. • Exhibition material (floor sheet, signage and labelling) • Online exhibition promotion on MJAC website and social media sites (no paid advertising) • Media release produced and distributed • E-Invitation emailed to MAC Inc. members, VIPS and mailing list • PDF invitation designed, to be circulated and printed at exhibitors cost • Artwork sales (35% gallery commission) • Insurance, cleaning and electricity • Catering for celebration event (light refreshments) 3 MUNDARING AND MIDLAND JUNCTION ARTS CENTRES 2022 EXHIBITION APPLICATION INFORMATION MUNDARING ARTS CENTRE MIDLAND JUNCTION ARTS CENTRE – VERANDA STUDIO 4 MUNDARING AND MIDLAND JUNCTION ARTS CENTRES 2022 EXHIBITION APPLICATION INFORMATION MIDLAND JUNCTION ARTS CENTRE – EAST & WEST GALLERIES 5 MUNDARING AND MIDLAND JUNCTION ARTS CENTRES 2022 EXHIBITION APPLICATION INFORMATION FEES AND ASSISTANCE • Gallery costs are a flat fee per space regardless the number of artists participating in the project. • We suggest that exhibitors apply to the WA Department of Local Government, Sports and Cultural Industries or their local governments for project funding to cover exhibition costs. • MAC Inc. can provide letters of support for grant applications, but cannot undertake grant writing on behalf of exhibitors. • Full payment of the gallery hire fee is due 4 months prior to the exhibition date. CANCELLATION • If exhibitors cancel a booked exhibition less than 4 months before the agreed date, a cancellation fee of 35% of the original hire fee will be charged for administration purposes. GALLERY INVIGILATION • MAC Inc. staff will invigilate the Mundaring Arts Centre and East and West Galleries at Midland Junction Arts Centre during advertised opening hours. • Exhibitors are required to invigilate the Veranda Studio. • Exhibitors are encouraged to be present for the opening night and related public programs when able. EXHIBITION INSTALLATION • Three to four days are scheduled for install of exhibitions and one to dismount it. Exhibitors are required to be available to assist during installation and pack down. • Delivery and collection of work is the responsibility of exhibitors on agreed installation dates. MAC Inc. is unable to provide long-term storage facilities for artwork. • MAC and MJAC galleries are fitted with hanging rails. If direct fixing of works is required, this must be included in the application as this is not permitted in some areas due to heritage regulations. • We provide basic installation equipment including hanging wires, plinths, AV

    THE EVOLUTION OF ‘IMMERSIVE’ EXHIBTIONS AT THE V&A MUSEUM, LONDON – 2008-2021 By Victoria Broackes and Geoffrey Marsh 1. Introduction GCDN members have expressed interest in the potential of ‘immersive’ exhibitions and related ‘experiences’ as programmatic elements that can meet their ambitions for broadening the base of their audiences. Audience analysis does demonstrate that these ‘experiences’ offer the opportunity of a cost-effective option with the ability to attract larger and more diverse audiences. As a result, there is particular curiosity about whether there is a basic underlying methodology, which can, however, create varied outputs that are faithful to the character and mission of their own districts. A comprehensive study of immersive exhibitions would require a book, so, as a starting point, this review examines the experience of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London – where we and colleagues have curated a series of immersive exhibitions over the last fifteen years. It stresses this was an evolutionary journey where skills, opportunities and confidence built up over time. However, the growth of a (semi-) commercial immersive exhibition market over this period means that GCDN members may have the opportunity of short circuiting such a process by connecting to an increasing number of ‘off the peg’ products, systems and creators in the post-Covid world. Sections 2, 3 and 4 trace the evolution as it happened, not simply as a matter of record but also to illustrate the interplay of opportunities, technology, sponsorship and other factors that impacted what was produced. The essence of a strategy is choosing what not to do” – Michael Porter, Harvard Business School KOAC 2019-2020 BUSINESS PLAN 1 Executive Summary The beginning of 2019 finds us on an exciting trajectory, assertively advancing in the development of The Kiyooka Ohe Arts Centre Society of Calgary (KOAC) after a period of internal reorganization, board and management restructuring, and financial and legal reforms. Although critical for the organizational well-being and to our continued success, the restructuring period forced us to postpone many initiatives during 2018 which the KOAC Board had identified as essential strategic programs and priorities. However, this pause also provided us with the chance to diagnose the Society’s current needs and the goals and objectives to achieve greater effectiveness. To that end, we diligently gained input from past and present Board members, volunteers, external advisors, and subject matter experts, potential donors and, especially, from the Springbank community. Their valuable feedback helped us understand how we can improve "en route" to the development of a clearer and more tactical three-year strategic vision of the future to meet our next challenges with a strong, unified, and focused KOAC. This year, in the short term, we plan to embark on a more aggressive implementation of specific programmatic interventions. KOAC is fully committed to supporting artists and stewarding its landscape, to nurturing and celebrating the relationship between art, nature, and people, and to operating a centre of contemplation and learning, focused on contemporary art.

    Rebecca Coates, The curator/patron: Foundations and contemporary art REBECCA COATES The curator/patron: Foundations and contemporary art Abstract This article addresses the role of private foundations in commissioning site-specific ephemeral art works: contemporary art projects of a temporary nature that are realised outside of public institutions. Though small in number, I argue that the private individuals creating and managing private foundations of this nature demonstrate a new form of patronage, creating in the process a new role of ‘curator/patron’. Equally, this process of realisation reflects the changing needs of contemporary art practice. Work of this scale and ambition would increasingly not be possible without the vision, perseverance and funding of these kinds of foundation. In Australia, this trend is demonstrated by two foundations: Kaldor Art Projects, and their commissioning of works by artists such as Christo and Jeanne-Claude, Gilbert & George and Jeff Koons; and the more recently formed Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation, whose first project was with Chinese artist Ai Weiwei. In this article, these examples are placed within the broader international context of foundation models such as Artangel, UK, Fondazione Nicola Trussardi, Milan, and The Public Art Fund, New York. The birth of Kaldor Art Projects In 1969, collector, entrepreneur and art patron John Kaldor invited internationally acclaimed contemporary artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude to wrap a section of the New South Wales coast. Wrapped Coast – One Million Square Feet, Little Bay, Sydney, Australia, 1969, was the culmination of many hours of planning, organisation and work. Wrapped Coast was installed by the artists together with a daily workforce of around 120 people, including professional mountain climber, labourers, students from the University of Sydney and East Sydney Technical College, and a number of Australian artists and teachers.

Visual Arts and Design Vaal University of Technology Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng Province South Africa Namibia lies on the west coast of the Southern Subcontinent of Africa. To the north is Angola. Botswana is to the east and South Africa is on the southern border. The capital of Windhoek is in the centre of this E-Leader Budapest 2010 sparsely populated country. In Windhoek is the township of Katutura. Life in the township can be harsh and unhealthy but there is, amongst the people, a strong creative spirit that manifests itself craft work, music, dance, and drama. The idea of setting up Community Arts Centres in this context is founded on the idea of promoting this creative output in such a way as to provide sustainable livelihoods in such underprivileged areas. The Department of Arts and Culture established the Community Arts Centre Programme between 1996 and 2001 with the stated objectives: 1) To provide opportunities for artists and cultural workers to participate in the arts; 2) To create opportunities for employment; and 3) To promote the cultural enrichment of the community in general but with a focus upon youth, women, children, and the disabled in particular. In 1996 the Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology instituted a programme to establish 42 arts centres in marginalized communities. In a detailed national audit of Community Arts Centre entitled E-Leader Budapest 2010 Towards Optimally Functioning Community Arts Centres in South Africa 2002 Gerard Hagg and Susan Selepe drew attention to the fact that there were (to summarise their findings): a) Funding difficulties.
