Until as late as the mid-twentieth century, Fenland communities were isolated, and their inhabitants were more vulnerable to environmental illnesses, such as malaria, than the rest of the population. A hard life, geographical isolation, close-knit communities and mistrust of outsiders may all have contributed to the Fenlanders’ abiding belief in the power of witchcraft. Ely’s place in the history of English witchcraft is a special one. As the cathedral city at the heart of the Fens, under the independent jurisdiction of the Bishop, Ely was the place where anyone locally accused of witchcraft would be brought to trial. The city was the hub from which John Stearne completed the last stage of Matthew Hopkins’s infamous witch-hunt in the 1640s, and Ely was the scene for the (quite literal) downfall of the first ‘witch’ to appear in English history.

In the church are several monuments of the families of Paris, Loan, Flack and Millicent, and an elegant mural monument of marble, by Wilton fm· Elizabeth, wife of Sir Thomas Sclater Bacon, of Catley Park, who died in 1726. This latter monument was erected by means of a bequest ·of £1000, left for the purpose by Peter Standley, Esq., to perpetuate his affection for his sister and benefactress. The living is a vicarage in the deanery of Camps, rated in the K.B., at £10. 13s. 4d., but now worth £204, nett per annum. The bishop of Ely is patron, and the Rev. Wm. Brett, :M.A., is the present vicar. Pembroke Hall possesses the irnpropriate rectory, which formerly belonged to the priory. The tithes were commuted in 1839 for £753. 18s. 6d., due to the society of Pembroke hall, and £259. Ss. 3d., to the vicar. T!te Independent Ckapel, a neat building, containing galleries all round and a good organ, will seat about 500 persons, and there is in connexion with it a school on the Briti87t and Foreign system, at which about 130 children attend. 1his chapel was founded in 1669, and re-built in 1818. The Rev. G. J. Hall is the minister. Plze National and Middle School, was founded in 1840 by the Rev. C. E. Ruck Keene, to whom the school buildings and spacious grounds belong, it contains two departments, in which 150 children are educated. The expenses of this institution are defrayed by annual subscribers assisted by the benevolent founder and patron.

Editorial board The project is implemented by Dr Helen Haugh Centre for Social Innovation at Cambridge Centre for Social Innovation Cambridge Judge Business School Cambridge Judge Business School and the Diocese of Ely Geoffrey Hunter with the generous support of Allchurches Trust Diocese of Ely and Historic England www.reachely.org The challenges facing church communities and their buildings have been extensively studied in the light of declining church attendance in the United Kingdom over several decades. REACH Ely aims to address the less-well-understood opportunities for churches to engage and reconnect with the 97.7 per cent of the local communities in the Diocese of Ely who do not attend their parish churches. With the absence of universal determinants of success and failure of churches in the community engagement context, the REACH Ely project will provide an understanding of the relationship between communities and wider use of church buildings as well as the contribution that churches make to the common good. Attended by 3 residents. Information: Work will start on the 17th November with planting of the new columns. The project will take about 6 weeks to complete. BB have been contracted to provide lighting to British Safety Standards S5 Class. There is a need for evenly spaced columns and positions that do not interfere with overhead power lines as the new lights are much taller. The lights will be dimmed from 10pm-6am. Residents with problems with light entering their property can request BB to install a front or a back baffle to the light, which can be fitted retrospectively. There is potential for the lights to be turned off completely after midnight from April 2015, but the decision has not been yet finalised. Light CC10 agreed to be moved further down towards Beech Lane. Lights cannot be installed beyond this point as it is not in the contract. Lights are being reduced from 3-2 on the meeting point between Glebe Crescent and Town lane. Residents are concerned about pedestrians, often pensioners, crossing over the Chequers etc.

    Mortlocks in Cambridgeshire Besides the Banking family, there were other unrelated families of Mortlocks in Cambridgeshire. Most of the main records for the county, apart from those of the banking family, find a place in one of the Suffolk trees - particularly the blacksmiths of Cheveley, Chippenham and Woodditton. The ‘China’ Mortlocks of Meldreth and Melbourn have their own section, and the Cherry Hinton and Cambridge family of William the Chapel Clerk also has a Suffolk descent, from Hundon. What are left are strays, or descents which petered out in the male line. West Wratting I have included some PR and other records for West Wratting but how they relate to other Mortlock families remains unresolved. There may be a connection with Brinkley (below). Attention should be paid to the clusters of Mortlocks just over the border in Suffolk. William and Elizabeth's family of seven children (including a rare Timothy) had as its senior son Fincham who married in St Clements, Cambridge in 1760. The only earlier Timothy Mortlock(1655-1669) was born in Denham, Suffolk, but that family, almost uniquely among Mortlocks,does not appear to use the name William. Weston Colville The Robert and the Peter who left Ely wills in Weston Colville in 1746 and 1764 respectively appear to have been father and son, Robert probably hailed from Hundon, Suffolk where he had a brother Richard. Robert was done for pound-breaking in 1739. For carpenter John, who married in Weston Colville but whose three children were all baptised inBrinkley, see the previous China Mortlock part of this study.
