Vatican Publishes Schedule for Papal Trip to Hungary, Slovakia Vatican publishes schedule for papal trip to Hungary, Slovakia VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Pope Francis’ September trip to Hungary and Slovakia features a jam-packed schedule that shows he has no intention of slowing down despite his recent recovery from colon surgery. The Vatican July 21 released the pope’s schedule for the trip Sept. 12-15, including the closing Mass of the International Eucharistic Congress in Budapest.” The pope announced the trip July 4 to pilgrims gathered in St. Peter’s Square for his Sunday Angelus address. “From the bottom of my heart, I thank those who are preparing this journey, and I am praying for them,” he said. “Let us all pray for this journey and for the people who are working to organize it.” Arriving in Hungary Sept. 12, the pope will meet with Hungarian President János Áder and Prime Minister Viktor Orbán before meeting with the country’s bishops and representatives of the Ecumenical Council of Churches and several Jewish communities. An answer is sought to the question of whether the actions of the political elite were justified in the light of the commencement of European integration and the complicated split of the big federations (Yugoslavia and Soviet Union) with the consequences for peace and European stability. An answer is sought to the question of whether the Slovak or Czech public would support or refuse their decision if they had been given a referendum on the matter. In 2003, Slovakia, along with the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Slovenia, Estonia and Malta, successfully concluded pre- accession negotiations for EU membership (guarantee of implementing the standards of democratic governance), which officially begins on May 1st 2004. The conducted comparison shows the emission and concentration of PM10 in Poznan against the supra-regional background. The purpose of the comparison with similar area and population cities is to identify the position of the Poznan agglomeration in terms of particulate matter emissions. The main sources are: original research, PM official measuring stations’ data, and the relevant organizations’ reports. On the basis of the conducted comparison, it can be concluded that Wroclaw and Poznan achieve very similar results in terms of emissions. Cracow, on the other hand, as a city where for several years there Citation: Jasi´nski,R.; have been significant problems with the phenomenon of smog and excessive emission of particulate Galant-Goł˛ebiewska,M.; Nowak, M.; Kurtyka, K.; Kurzawska, P.; matter, reaches extremely different values compared to Poznan.

  • American and Vatican Reactions to the Tiso Trial
AMERICAN AND VATICAN REACTIONS TO THE TISO TRIAL By Walter U11 mann The trial and subsequent execution of Mgr. Jozef Tiso, one-time president of Slovakia, caused considerable commotion in certain American circles. In parti- cular, it affected the sentiments of some Americans of Slovak origin who, for the most part, viewed the sentence as unjust and considered the execution of a Catholic preláte a simple act of revenge by an atheist, Communist-dominated government. The following is an attempt to trace briefly the events leading up to Tiso's trial and to examine American reactions to them, both in official circles and among spokesmen of various Slovak-American organizations in the United States, as well as their American Sponsors. As will be seen, the official American position differed sharply from the position of most of the various individuals and groups which sponsored Tiso's cause in the United States. Washingtons refusal to intervene in Prague on behalf of the accu- sed lends itself to the potential charge that responsible U. S. officials were both influenced and misinformed by Prague and its Washington embassy and that the true nature of Tiso and his independent administration during World War II had been obscured. While it is certainly correct to say that the Czechoslovak Embassy in Washington and, for that matter, the Prague government presented their case as they saw it, there is no evidence that American unwillingness to come to Tiso's aid was motivated by the official Czechoslovak position. Rather, the extant docu mentation suggests that Washington steered an independent course and did not permit itself to be influenced by either Communist exaggerations or exiled pro- Tiso elements.
