The Overview of Green Building Sector in Slovakia
EAI Endorsed Transactions on Energy Web Research Article The overview of green building sector in Slovakia Julius Golej1,* and Andrej Adamuscin1 1 Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava, Institute of Management, Slovakia Abstract Green buildings have become a global trend in recent years, reflecting a social order for sustainable development from the sides of all stakeholders. This is confirmed by the fact that the global construction of green buildings comprises for almost a quarter of the total production of all buildings. Buildings generally represent a huge sector of energy consumers, so it is now necessary to reduce this consumption through smart design solutions and an appropriate building management system that will ensure efforts to achieve sustainable and smart urban requirements for the use of intelligent technologies. Regarding to the development of green buildings, Slovakia belongs to developing countries. The term "green building" is slowly becoming familiar in Slovakia, although it should be noted that the green building certification systems are only at the beginning. Also, the legislative and other financial support instruments for green buildings in Slovakia are under the phase of consideration and do not exist in practice. In the following paper, the authors explore green building sector in Slovakia. They present their development and overview, rating systems and analyses the most important investors and key local companies related to green buildings in Slovakia. An answer is sought to the question of whether the actions of the political elite were justified in the light of the commencement of European integration and the complicated split of the big federations (Yugoslavia and Soviet Union) with the consequences for peace and European stability. An answer is sought to the question of whether the Slovak or Czech public would support or refuse their decision if they had been given a referendum on the matter. In 2003, Slovakia, along with the Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Slovenia, Estonia and Malta, successfully concluded pre- accession negotiations for EU membership (guarantee of implementing the standards of democratic governance), which officially begins on May 1st 2004. As a consequence of its proximity to Bratislava (Slovakia) and Brno (Czech Republic) Vienna benefits from shopping tourism. On Christmas season weekends, up to 200,000 shopping tourists from neighbouring countries come to Vienna. In 2018, as in the past 8 years, Vienna ranks at the top of a leading international comparative study on the quality of living in different cities, and scores highly in many other rankings. Tourism is extremely strong in Vienna and is relatively unaffected by seasonal fluctuations. In 2018 the number of overnight stays hit a new record high of 16.48 million, and the number of tourists with high purchasing power, in particular from Asia, is increasing. The principal tourist attractions in the city are within the central ring road and surround the prime retail area. Living costs are relatively high in Vienna and this is reflected in the above-average wage levels among those employed there. It is not a place for cheap shopping but does offer numerous elegant shops and quality products. There is an increasing concentration of new luxury brands and flagship stores in the city centre. The conducted comparison shows the emission and concentration of PM10 in Poznan against the supra-regional background. The purpose of the comparison with similar area and population cities is to identify the position of the Poznan agglomeration in terms of particulate matter emissions. The main sources are: original research, PM official measuring stations’ data, and the relevant organizations’ reports. On the basis of the conducted comparison, it can be concluded that Wroclaw and Poznan achieve very similar results in terms of emissions. After being sold to Howard Schultz in 1987, the company began expanding rapidly, first in the United States, then in the global markets (starbucks.com.tr, n.d.). The secret of the company's global success lies behind its vision that was inspired by the Italian coffeehouse experience: to become the third place after home and office where people can enjoy quality coffee over conversations that are nurtured by the sense of community at every Starbucks store (starbucks.com.tr, n.d.). Today, with more than 24,000 stores in 70 countries, Starbucks' name represents one of the largest coffee brands and coffeehouse chains in the world (starbucks.com, n.d.). In the beginning, Starbucks differentiated itself as a company that offers "affordable luxury" to white collar urban dwellers who would be more likely to have a demand for the "third space" in their lives (Mourdoukoutas, 2013).
