Suppan viel Freude mit der vorliegenden Ausgabe unserer Drehscheibe! oder laut Bildunterschrift Ihr Redaktionsteam 2 | Ausgabe 56 – Dezember 2011 JAHRESRÜCKBLICK 2011 Ein Jahr großer Veränderungen Rückblick auf die Leistungen des Jahres 2011 Das letzte Jahr verlief für unser Unternehmen durchwegs erfolgreich, obwohl am 12. Dezember 2010 ein grundlegend neuer Fahr- plan in Kraft trat und die von der GKB bedienten S-Bahn Linien in der Weststeiermark völlig neu geordnet wurden. Dies stellte einen historischen Meilenstein dar! Personen- und Güterverkehr Die Linie der S 6 wird seither über den ersten Teilabschnitt der Koralmbahn und die Südbahn von Wies-Eibiswald über Deutsch- landsberg, Wettmannstätten, Hengsberg und Puntigam nach Graz geführt. Durch das Oisnitztal verkehrt auf der Stammstrecke die neue Linie S 61, während die S 7 unverändert Köflach mit Graz verbindet. Mit dieser Neuordnung ging auch eine Anpassung der Fahrpläne einher, womit die Linien S 6 und S 7 den Grazer Hauptbahnhof zur vollen Stunde erreichen. Damit ergaben sich neue, kur- ze Umsteigezeiten zu den übrigen S-Bahn Linien des Steirischen Verkehrsverbundes. Aus Wies-Eibiswald oder Deutschlandsberg kommend, erreicht man die Landeshauptstadt nun um 15 Minuten schneller und mit Hengsberg wurde eine ganze Region erstmals an den Schienenverkehr angebunden. Eine weitere deutliche Verbesserung des Reisekomforts stellen die neu beschafften Stadler Gelenktriebwagen der Type GTW2/8 dar. Durch die Neuaufnahme von zusätzlichem Zugbegleitpersonal, die Abstimmung mit Bus- kursen und den Ausbau von Park & Ride-Anlagen entlang des gesamten Streckennetzes wurde das Angebot der GKB zusätzlich abgerundet. Das Jahresaufkommen an Fahrgästen (Bahn und Bus) konnte durch diese Verbesserung des Fahrplanangebotes auf etwa 10 Millionen gesteigert werden. Im Bereich des Güterverkehrs in der Weststeiermark stabilisierte sich das Transportvolumen der GKB auf ungefähr 500.000 bis 600.000 Nettotonnen. Infrastrukturmaßnahmen Neben den üblichen Erhaltungsarbeiten (Schienen- tausch, Mäharbeiten u.s.w.) wurden in diesem Jahr wieder viele Projekte zur Verbesserung der Infrastruk- tur durchgeführt. Es wurden die Eisenbahnkreuzungen in Söding-Mooskirchen, Lannach, Deutschlandsberg- Burgeggerstraße und Graz-Kärntnerstraße saniert, so- wie die Weiche 1 in Krottendorf und Weichenschwellen- sätze in Deutschlandsberg, Lieboch, Lannach, Voitsberg und Köflach instandgesetzt. In den Bahnhöfen Voits- berg, Köflach und Wies-Eibiswald wurden Weichen- heizungen installiert und die Bahnsteige der Bahnhöfe Söding, Lannach und Krottendorf wurden neu errichtet. Im Zuge der Linienverbesserung der Strecke Graz-Köf- lach wurden die Unterführung Auenstraße und die Ligist- bachbrücke in Krottendorf neu errichtet. Besonders zu erwähnen ist auch der Neubau der Kainachbrücke als GKB-Stahlbogenbrücke über die Kainach in Krottendorf / Foto: Abtl. IN-FC Stahlbogenbrücke mit einer Stützweite von 56,80 m und einem Gewicht von 375,60 t. Für das Jahr 2012 sind der Neubau bzw. die Sanierung der Muggenbach-, Liebochbach- und zweier Lassnitzbrücken geplant. Eine weitere große Herausforderung für die GKB stellte dieses Jahr auch der Umbau des Süd-Kopfes am Grazer Hauptbahnhof dar. Von 1. August – 11. September 2011 waren wegen Bauarbeiten die Bahngleise 518 – 558 und 800 im Bereich der Eggenberger Unterführung am Hauptbahnhof Graz gesperrt. Zwischen dem Hauptbahnhof und dem Graz Köflacherbahnhof konnten in dieser Zeit keine Zugfahrten durchgeführt werden, daher wurde die Einrichtung eines Schienenersatzverkehrs mit GKB-Niederflurbussen notwendig. Alle Güterwagen ins bzw. aus dem Netz der GKB wurden mit nächtlichen Sondergüterzügen via Bf. Wettmannstätten (Ostschleife) und Bf. Werndorf nach Graz-Verschiebebahnhof überstellt. Trotz der massiven Beeinträchtigungen kam es nur zu weni- gen Beschwerden. Von besonderer Bedeutung waren die Informationen über die Maßnahmen und Alternativen durch das Personal der GKB. Für Wege Richtung Grazer Innenstadt wurden auch vermehrt die Umsteigemöglichkeiten zu den Grazer Verkehrsbetrie- ben in Graz Webling, Graz Wetzelsdorf und am Graz Köflacherbahnhof genutzt. Ziel der durchgeführten und geplanten Bauarbeiten ist die Errichtung bzw. Optimierung der notwendigen Eisenbahnanlagen um den Übergang in das Netz der ÖBB zu vereinfachen und damit die Mobilität unserer Fahrgäste zu verbessern. Text: Mag. E. November 2011 verkehren die Stadler Gelenktriebwagen (GTW 2/8) der GKB im Planverkehr als S 6 auf der Strecke der Koralmbahn zwischen dem Bahnhof Wies-Eibiswald und dem Grazer Hauptbahnhof mit Halt im Bahnhof Graz Puntigam! Ab Sonntag, 11. Dezember 2011 treten folgende Änderungen in Kraft: • Z 8401 verkehrt ab Graz bereits um 5.07 • Z 8402 verkehrt ab Köflach bereits um 4.45 • Z 8414 verkehrt ab Köflach um 7.34 und hält in Lieboch und Premstätten-Tobelbad • Neu an Sonn- u. Feiertagen verkehrt ab Graz Z 8409 um 9.03 und ab Köflach Z 8424 um 11.04 • Z 8493 und 8495 halten in der Haltestelle Köppling • Die Haltestelle Gaisfeld wird ausgenommen von den Z 8493, 8495, 8414, 8490 und 8492 wieder angefahren! • Z 8551 hält nicht mehr in der Haltestelle Gussendorf • Z 8553 verkehrt ab Graz erst um 6.43 und hält nicht in der Haltestelle Graz Webling • Z 4359 verkehrt von Montag-Freitag bereits ab Graz Hbf um 6.58 • Z 8550 verkehrt ab Wies-Eibiswald bereits um 3.40 • Z 8552 verkehrt ab Wies-Eibiswald bereits um 4.26 • Z 4354 verkehrt ab Wies-Eibiswald bereits um 5.32 • Z 8554 verkehrt ab Wies-Eibiswald bereits um 5.59 • Z 4356 verkehrt nicht mehr • Z 8502 hält in Alling-Tobisegg • Neu an Werktagen verkehrt Z 8566 ab Wies-Eibiswald um 5.01 • An Samstagen verkehren die Z 8566, 8554 • An Samstagen unterbleiben die Z 8552, 4354, 8500, 4358, 8502 Weitere Informationen unter: 0316/5978-256 oder www.gkb.at In der Ferne und doch so nah...)     The Awdry Connection with the Talyllyn Railway. The Rev. Wilbert Awdry inherited an interest in railways from his father, the Rev. Vere Awdry, and together with his brother George, became a keen railway modeller. His first book in what was to become “The Railway Series” had been published in 1945, and by 1951 he had written four more. In February that year, someone knowing his interests, sent him an article which had appeared in the Birmingham Mail entitled “EIGHT MILES OF RAILWAY TO PLAY WITH – AND REAL TRAINS - FOR £1 A YEAR”. That railway was the Talyllyn Railway, and Wilbert’s interest was aroused sufficiently to apply for membership of the newly formed Preservation Society: his receipt was numbered 79. Coincidentally, Wilbert had a distant cousin Frank who lived in Tywyn. They had never met, but Wilbert and George had visited Frank’s sisters in Clevedon, Somerset, and had heard stories about the ‘somewhat wayward little railway’ in Tywyn. In August 1952 Wilbert, together with his wife Margaret, son Christopher and daughters Veronica and Hilary, visited the Talyllyn Railway for the first time. On arrival, Wilbert and Christopher went straight to Wharf Station to introduce themselves to Tom Rolt, the General Manager. Wilbert volunteered to do duty as a Guard during the second week of his holiday. The most memorable incident of the week was when he left the Refreshment Lady behind in the Booking Office at Abergynolwyn – the first of many events that Wilbert was to enshrine in future books. It was almost inevitable that, having become a regular visitor and volunteer on the Talyllyn Railway, Wilbert should find a way to write about it in his books.

    5.5MM ASSOCIATION HANDBOOK. An introduction to modelling in 5.5mm scale (1/55). Why 5.5mm scale? At first sight, 5.5mm/foot scale seems extraordinary. Why model in such a strange scale, when 4mm (009) and 7mm (O.16.5) are more prevalent and popular? Actually, there are a number of reasons. The original, and still (to us) the best. Believe it or not, 5.5mm scale for narrow gauge modelling as a commercial scale is the oldest in existence. It was in 1963 that GEM models of North Wales (a leading manufacturer of TT products at that time) introduced the first kit of Prince and some wagons all to run on 12mm (TT) gauge track. At that time, N gauge (in the form of Lone Star 000) was very much in its infancy. Narrow gauge models representing 2’ gauge required a larger scale than 4mm to the foot in order to use TT gauge track standards, so 5.5mm was chosen because it was exactly half way between 4mm and 7mm scales. It also gave a useful ‘scale’ gauge between 2’ and 2’3” which fitted with the Festiniog and Talyllyn Railway prototypes that were produced. Triang's TT loco and wagon chassis had already been used for 00n3 modelling and could now be used for 5.5 as well. The range and standards offered a ready-made source of available and reliable mechanism parts. Many Triang TT chassis are still running strong over 50 years on from their introduction. 1/55 scale offers a nice halfway house between 4mm and 7mm scales; you have the reliability of 3mm mechanisms for smaller prototypes (Welsh lines), and OO mechs for larger prototypes (Isle of Man and Irish lines).

This time it is where the preservation movement started in the UK – the Talyllyn Railway which runs the 7¼ miles between Nant Gwernol near the village of Abergynolwyn and Tywyn Wharf on the coast. The Talyllyn Railway As with so many narrow gauge railways in Wales, this 2’3”(!) gauge line was built to carry slate, on this occasion from the quarries at Bryn Eglwys. The line has another claim to fame in that although primarily a freight operation, it was the first steam hauled narrow gauge railway designed and built to transport passengers from the outset, the 1865 authorizing Act of Parliament being the first to give permission to do this. As with many such operations it had its ups and downs and at one stage was kept open as a social service. In 1950, following the death of its then owner, Sir Haydn Jones, the line closed. In 1951, a band of volunteers led by Bill Trinder, Tom Rolt and David Curwen led the group of people who took over responsibility for the line 1 and so it became the first preservation railway in the world taken over by volunteers.

    PRODUCT SHEET ACCUCRAFT UK LTD ‘DOLGOCH’ Talyllyn Railway 0-4-0T Photo Courtesy of Geoff Loynes Dolgoch was built by Fletcher, Jennings & Co. in 1866 and is one of the oldest locomotives still in active service. A well tank locomotive with a long wheelbase and the driving axle is behind the firebox, Dolgoch was fitted with an unconventional form of Allan valve gear, driven from the leading coupled axle and doubled back to connect to the valve rods. The locomotive was renamed Pretoria between about 1900 and 1914 in celebration of the relief of that township in South Africa by Lord Roberts during the Boer War. It then reverted to the original name Dolgoch. For most of the Railway’s life, names were painted only on the North side of the locomotives (the platform face). Polished brass nameplates have only been carried in preservation. In early 1945, Dolgoch was sent to the Atlas Foundry in Shrewsbury to be overhauled. At this time, the railway’s only other locomotive Talyllyn was so worn out it could not be safely operated and services on the railway were suspended. Dolgoch returned to service in September 1945, with new displacement cylinder lubricators mounted on each side of the smokebox, a new chimney, and a repaired inner firebox and retubed the boiler. Dolgoch was the only operable locomotive from 1945 until 1952, when Edward Thomas was restored for use.     PRISM Fund report 2010/11 1 Introduction The PRISM Fund (Preservation of Industrial and Scientific Material) supports the acquisition and conservation of heritage objects from the fields of science, technology, industry and medicine in England and Wales. It was established in 1973 in response to the growing public concern that technological change was resulting in the loss of much of Britain's industrial heritage. Since 1973 PRISM has helped hundreds of non-national museums and preservation groups acquire or conserve thousands of objects of industrial or scientific importance. The fund aims to support the variety of organisations entrusted with the care of our industrial and scientific heritage, forging links and encouraging best practice. The fund was managed by the National Museum of Science and Industry (NMSI) on behalf of the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) until 31 March 2003, before being managed solely by MLA. Management of the fund transferred to Arts Council England in October 2011 at the request of the government. Arts Council England continues to take expert advice from the staff of the NMSI as well as from other national museums. There has been no significant change to the scope of the fund since its inception except for its extension to include conservation projects in the early 1990s. This is compared to 32 grants worth £220,448 made in 2009/10. The average size of a grant was £9,507 which is up on last year’s average of £7,473.92.
