A considerable amount of this poetry is known to have been composed by women and is associated with aspects of traditional culture which were always women's particular responsibility. It is the purpose of this paper to compare the women's poetry of Ireland and Scotland and to examine the integration of 'literary' creativity with traditional life in both cultures. Until the seventeenth century, Ireland and Scotland shared a common language and a common social structure. There was a privileged elite of male poets whose power and prestige were fundamentally linked to political stability. -

134 Eoghán Rua Ó Suilleabháin: A True Exponent of the Bardic Legacy endowed university. The Bardic schools and the monastic schools were the universities of their day; they bestowed privileges and Barra Ó Donnabháin Symposium: status on their students and teachers, much as the modern university awards degrees and titles to recipients to practice certain professions. With regard to the location of the schools, he asserts that it was necessary that the place should “be in the solitary access of a garden” or “within a set or enclosure far out of the reach of any noise.” The structure containing the Bardic school, we are told, “was snug, low, hot and beds in it at convenient distances, each within a small apartment without much furniture of any kind, save only a table, some seats and a conveniency for he poetry of Eoghan Rua Ó Súilleabháin (1748-1784)— cloaths (sic) to hang upon. No windows to let in the day, nor any Tregarded as one of Ireland’s great eighteenth century light at all used but that of candles” according to Clanricarde,2 poets—has endured because of it’s extraordinary metrical whose account is given credence by Bergin3 and Corkery. -

Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Humanities College of Arts University of Glasgow September 2017 Abstract This thesis explores a number of topics centred around the theme of memory in relation to medieval Irish literature roughly covering the period 600—1200 AD but considering, where necessary, material later than this date. Firstly, based on the current scholarship in memory studies focused on the Middle Ages, the relationship between medieval thought on memory in Ireland is compared with its broader European context. From this it becomes clear that Ireland, whilst sharing many parallels with European thought during the early Middle Ages based on a shared literary inheritance from the Christian and late-classical worlds, does not experience the same renaissance in memory theory that occurred in European universities from the thirteenth century onwards. -

THE POETIC BREHON LAWYERS The Poetic Brehon Lawyers Of Early Sixteenth Century Ireland For the year 1529 the Annals of Loch Cé1 record the deaths of four Irish brehons, or traditional lawyers. Three of them are said to be learned in poetry as well. The longest entry concerns An Cosnamhach Mac Aodhagáin, or MacEgan, the most eminent man in the lands of the Gaeidhel in Irish customary law [fénechas], and in poetry [filidhecht], with secular jurisprudence [breithemnus tuaithi]. (This latter phrase is understood by the editor to refer to a knowledge of Roman civil law, certainly a possible interpretation.) These poetic lawyers of 1529 are by no means unusual. The two most influential families of hereditary Irish lawyers during the fifteenth and early sixteenth centuries, the MacEgans of Connacht and Tipperary and the MacClancy (Mac Fhlannchadha) judges to the OBriens in Co. Clare, each produced experts in poetry and general Irish literature, generation after generation,2 and the MacEgans also cultivated music.3 We are told the ideal ollamh or master of the legal profession should be expert in every art,4 that is in all branches of vernacular Irish learning: customary law, bardic poetry, music, medicine, 1 Edited W.M. A Hero's Lament: Aithbhreac inghean Coirceadail's Lament for Niall Óg mac Néill1 JOSEPH J. FLAHIVE In recent years, the lament of Aithbhreac inghean Coirceadail has not been without interest to scholars of Scottish Gaelic— and indeed to the wider field of Celtic Literature, after a long period of neglect. Some of this delay may have been Protestant religious hesitation due to the domination of the poem by the image of a rosary; in the first printed edition of it, The Rev. Thomas McLauchlan translated the unequivocal paidrín as 'jewel', only informing the reader that it was indeed a rosary in a deliberately ambiguous footnote: 'The word "paidrein", derived from "Paidir", The Lord's Prayer, really means a rosary' (McLauchlan: 126). More recent neglect has probably been because of the notorious difficulty of the manuscript in which it is preserved rather than the nature of the text. It should suffice to begin with a brief summary of the poem's background and preservation. The poem is an elegy in the Early Modern Gaelic shared by Scotland and Ireland, lamenting the decease of Niall Óg mac Néill of Gigha, the hereditary keeper of Castle Sween. It is preserved solely in that most fascinating of manuscripts, the Book of the Dean of Lismore (hereafter, BDL), an early sixteenth-century compendium of everything from the Chronicle of Fortingall to a shopping list, with much verse filling the literary distance between these genres. The Gaelic in it is written in an orthography based on Middle Scots and far removed from the conventions of Gaelic spelling. -

Aspects of bardic poetry in the thirteenth century Padraig 6 Machain NE OF THE noteworthy characteristics of Osborn Bergin, and of many other Oscholars ofhis generation, is the different ways in which he and they engaged with the Irish language, particularly in the years before the foundation of the State. He was far from being a one-dimensional scholar. As we know, Bergin first comes to attention not just in the area of scholarship but also as a language activist, as a founding member of Craobh na Laoi of Conradh na Gaeilge, one of the more rebellious branches in the heady days of that organisation at the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth.' His activities on behalf of the language continued into his more mature period, after he had been appointed to University College Dublin in 1909. In the year that his public lecture on bardic poetry was delivered (1912) Bergin was engaged in academic projects such as co-editing the Miscellany presented to Kuno Meyer, where difficulties with his co-editor, Carl Marstrander, proved trying;2 but he also found time in July to teach phonetics at Colaiste na Mumhan in Beal Atha an Ghaorthaidh,3 and to give a lecture to the West Muskerry Teachers' Association on the subject of simplified spelling, which had not found favour with Conradh na Gaeilge.4 This support and service that he gave to the language and literary endeavours in his native county is symbolized by the publication of the lecture, which we are commemorating here, in the Journal of the Jvernian Society, 'Traolach 6 Riordain, Conradh na Gaeilge i gCorcaigh 1894-1910 (Dublin 2000) 30-31, 73-4.
