Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Humanities College of Arts University of Glasgow September 2017 Abstract This thesis explores a number of topics centred around the theme of memory in relation to medieval Irish literature roughly covering the period 600—1200 AD but considering, where necessary, material later than this date. Firstly, based on the current scholarship in memory studies focused on the Middle Ages, the relationship between medieval thought on memory in Ireland is compared with its broader European context. From this it becomes clear that Ireland, whilst sharing many parallels with European thought during the early Middle Ages based on a shared literary inheritance from the Christian and late-classical worlds, does not experience the same renaissance in memory theory that occurred in European universities from the thirteenth century onwards. Next, a detailed semantic study of memory terms in Old and Middle Irish is provided with the aim of clarifying, supplementing and revising the definitions found in the Royal Irish Academy’s Dictionary of the Irish Language. Whilst the two principal memory nouns, cuimne and mebair, appear largely synonymous, the verb mebraigid appears to lean towards favouring the sense of ‘committing to memory,’ whereas cuimnigid(ir) encompasses this sense in addition to that of ‘recalling from memory.’ The third part of this thesis re-evaluates the dichotomous tension between notions of orality and literacy which some scholars have found in medieval Irish literature, arguing that this aspect has perhaps been exaggerated and that memory was a fluid concept in medieval Ireland embracing and merging both oral and textual forms. Following this, an assessment is made as to the importance and function of memory within the learned culture of the filid emphasising its necessary significance in a culture still partly based in an oral world. A wide range of sources including legal texts, grammatical tracts and tale literature is explored to show that the filid’s idealisation of memory was, largely, as a broad, comprehensive source supplying the knowledge necessary to acquire prestige through its performance and expression in a social context. The last part of this thesis investigates the notion that memory of the past could be used for the purposes of propaganda in medieval Ireland through the case study of the Ulster Cycle tales. Thanks also to my mother for her comments and corrections on my final draft. In memory of my father. 3 1.0 Introduction Memory is not an easy topic around which to form a study. It is a word which encompasses a variety of subtly different meanings and implications. The Oxford English Dictionary defines memory with no less than ten distinct categories under three primary groupings.1 These, in very brief summary, variously cover the concepts of the mental faculty of memory, items retained within this faculty and physical objects serving a memorial purpose, as well as acts of remembering, recollecting and committing to memory. Consequently, when taken as a theme in a study of a particular historical culture as preserved in its surviving literature, memory provides many potential avenues for exploration. One option is to study depictions of memory found in a literature through how it portrays actual acts of memorising and recalling, in order to come directly to a clearer understanding of how such acts were viewed and understood in a historical context, and to better define their function and importance according to the consciously professed values held by that culture. A second is to view the texts comprising a literature as memorial monuments in and of themselves and study a culture’s attitude to memory almost archaeologically, by examining the nature and uses of the surviving tools through which memory could be preserved. Literature, amongst its many other possible functions, is often created to serve a memorialising purpose, and it has long been recognised that this is especially true of medieval Irish literature.2 These two possible approaches to the study of memory in relation to a historic literature do, to a greater or lesser extent, overlap and complement each other. Indeed, it is not possible to do one full justice without considering it in relation to the other. In the context of medieval Ireland, the situation is compounded by the fact that the literature concerned arose in a world where text was not the only nor, indeed, always the primary means of preserving and transmitting memory. Our surviving texts were produced in context of a culture which also relied on and valued an oral means of communicating memory. The question of how best to understand the relationship between the oral and the written within medieval Irish literature is a topic that has greatly preoccupied scholars working with this material. This thesis was born out of a desire to investigate and better understand how medieval Irish writers felt they were able to access the past and how they represented that past in the works they produced. Memory, in this context, provides a general unifying theme. Those who composed and recorded the surviving examples of the literature of medieval Ireland were keenly aware of the passage of time, and of the fragility of human attainments in the face of this. In Search of a Meaningful Theoretical Framework to Assess the Dynamics of Contemporary Scottish Gaelic Verse Corinna Krause (University of Edinburgh) The late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries saw what is known today as the Highland Clearances, which was in effect the forced migration of a large proportion of the population of the Scottish Highlands due to intensified sheep farming in the name of a more effective economic land use (Devine, 1999, pp.176-78). For the Gaelic speech community this meant ‘the removal of its heartland’ (MacKinnon, 1974, p.47). MacKinnon argues that ‘effectively this was to reorientate the linguistic geography of Scotland in reducing the Gaelic areas to the very fringes of northern and western coastal areas and to the Hebrides’ (1974, p.47). Yet, it was not economic exploitation alone which influenced the existence of the Gaelic population in a most profound way. There was also an active interference with language use through the eradication of Gaelic from the sphere of education as manifested in a series of Education Acts from 1872 onwards. Such education policy ensured the integration of the Gaelic speech community into English-language Britain (MacKinnon, 1974, pp.54-74). It is now a prized possession of the Royal Irish Academy, Dublin. It will not be considered presumptuous to call this production 'The Speckled Booklet' as it is our tribute to our forbears who left such an imprint on the history of Law and Learning in Ireland. As you will see, the articles appearing in the booklet are of particular interest to people of the names MacEgan, Egan, Eagan and Keegan. Because the MacEgans were a family interested in their family history and genealogy from the earliest times, it is not surprising that the formation of our Clan Association has evoked such interest amongst our kith and kin at home and abroad.

    The Faddan More Psalter A progress update John Gillis and Anthony Read The Faddan More Psalter is an Eighth Century illuminated vellum manuscript, in its original limp, tanned leather cover that was found in a bog in Co Tipperary, Ireland in July 2006. The find has stirred up a great deal of interest, both in the book itself and in the genuinely unique conservation problems that it presents. It is the intention of this report to outline the approach that has been taken to date and to summarise the work that is currently being undertaken. The discovery and condition of the book The book was found on the afternoon of 20th July 2006 by Mr Eddie Fogarty, who was operating a mechanical digger in the bog at Faddan More, near Birr. Mr Fogarty, somewhat astonishingly, spotted the book as it sprung open in the bucket of his digger and then dropped into the 2 metre deep trench adjacent to where he had been working. He immediately contacted the bog owners, Kevin and Patrick Leonard, who gathered together the fragments and covered them with wet peat before notifying the staff of the National Museum of Ireland. We were indeed fortunate on a number of fronts that the book survived at all, that it was spotted under these circumstances, and that the landowners had made archaeological discoveries before, had a keen interest in local history, and knew from past experience exactly what to do with the find to ensure its preservation while still in the bog.     Island Pamphlets (contents) The original back-cover synopses for pamphlets 1–96 The Island Pamphlet series was initiated in 1993 for the purpose of stimulating debate on a variety of issues pertinent to Northern Irish society. Some of the first titles sought to explore aspects of Ulster’s shared history and culture. However, increasing interest in the pamphlets soon engendered requests for them to be tied in with community-based ‘Think Tanks’ – small-group discussions which focused on the different needs encountered at a grassroots level. These Think Tank pamphlets, which were edited accounts of these discussions, endeavoured to bring to a wider audience the diversity of opinion which existed within grassroots communities in Northern Ireland – Unionist and Nationalist – but which was sparsely reflected by the mainstream media. The Think Tanks embraced all sides of Northern Ireland’s communal divide, as well as different groupings within communities: young people, senior citizens, community activists, ex-prisoners, victims.... Other pamphlets provided a record of important community conferences, debates or cross-border exchanges. In an attempt to accommodate the increasing number of requests to set up Think Tanks focusing on different themes, European Peace & Reconciliation funding was successfully sought, and in late 1998, commencing with pamphlet No. 19, Island Pamphlets was incorporated into the Farset Community Think Tanks Project. The pamphlet series developed three basic aims: (i) to provide a vehicle for the small-group discussions; (ii) to extend the debate even further by distributing 2000 copies of each title around the community network; and (iii) to facilitate, where possible, an ongoing cross-community dialogue.

Our aim will be to make a historical and literary analysis of the text to understand that it can be read as a set of binomials, three types of binomials more exactly: history and mythology; religion and paganism; and prose and verse. The result of this analysis will prove the coexistence and, in some cases, also the conflict between these oppositions. Este Trabajo de Fin de Grado tiene como objeto de estudio el poem irlandés Buile Suibhne (que data probablemente del siglo XIII) en la traducción al inglés publicada en 1987 or Seamus Heaney, bajo el título de Sweeney Astray. Nuestro objetivo será hacer un análisis histórico y literario del texto para entender que éste se puede leer como un conjunto de binomios, tres tipos para ser exactos: historia y mitología; religión y paganismo; y prosa y verso.     Hunting for the genetic legacy of Brian Boru in Irish historical sources. Catherine Swift, Mary Immaculate College Having won an English chariot from an Italian gentleman at play, my uncle had our arms painted on the panels in a more splendid way than ever (surmounted, as we were descended from the ancient kings) with an Irish crown of the most splendid size and gilding. I had this crown in lieu of a coronet engraved on a large amethyst signet-ring worn on my forefinger; and I don’t mind confessing that I used to say the jewel had been in my family for several thousand years, having originally belonged to my direct ancestor, his late Majesty, King Brian Boru or Barry. I warrant the legends of the Heralds’ College are not more authentic than mine was.1 In his travels in Ireland in 1842, Thackeray followed the course of the Shannon up river from Tarbert to Limerick and then travelled through Clare to Galway, visiting “a decent little library” in Ennis where he bought “six volumes of works strictly Irish”. As he describes them subsequently, “these yellow-covered books are prepared for the people chiefly” and included tales of a highwayman entitled Adventures of Mr James Freeny, legends in Hibernian Tales2 and “the lamentable tragedy of the ‘Battle of Aughrim’ writ in the most doleful Anglo-Irish verse.” He does not refer explicitly in his Irish Sketchbook to Brian Boru but it seems fair to assume that his description of Barry Lyndon’s ancestry was based, at least in part, on stories he had heard when travelling through Thomond or, perhaps, even elsewhere in Ireland.
