Angela Bourke ~ AND WEEPING \'DtmN 1 S OOAL OOEIRY IN IRISH AND SCDI'l'ISH GAELIC Angela Bourke lectures in the Department of Mcx::lern Irish at University College, I:Xlblin page 2 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Irish and Scottish Gaelic are both rich in oral tradition and there exists in each a lari'e body of anonymous oral literature, mostly stories and poetry. A considerable amount of this poetry is known to have been composed by women and is associated with aspects of traditional culture which were always women's particular responsibility. It is the purpose of this paper to compare the women's poetry of Ireland and Scotland and to examine the integration of 'literary' creativity with traditional life in both cultures. Until the seventeenth century, Ireland and Scotland shared a common language and a common social structure. There was a privileged elite of male poets whose power and prestige were fundamentally linked to political stability. -

Because of ueland's historical status as a colony, and of Irish people's status as dispossessed of their land, it has been a crucial necessity for Irish writers to establish a sense of unique national identity. Code-mixing and code-switching are common and well-documented processes in the speech of multilingual persons. Where multilingual persons are also literate in each language, code-mixing is also possible in writing. Despite conservative pressures which tend to deem only one of the languages in a linguistic repertoire the prestige variety, and therefore the primary choice for written expression, multiliterate authors who are able to assume a multiliterate readership may use two or more languages in their texts. Some theories of code-mixing are here summarized, along with a review of code-mixing in spoken Irish. Examination of code-mixing in modern and contemporary Irish literary texts shows that, structurally, written code-mixing is for the most part similar to what is observed in spoken language. Functionally, however, written mixing often has wider aims. Because writing is a planned and conscious form of language, multilingual writers utilize their greater linguistic repertoires strategically by imbuing different languages with different symbolic meanings. A full appreciation of such texts requires an understanding not just of the languages involved, but also of their functions in the cultural environment and the historical, political, and cultural associations with the other languages. Brian Ó Nualláin/O’Nolan Scholarly Background & Foreground* Breandán Ó Conaire St Patrick’s College, Dublin City University ‘Ní fhéadaim cuimhneamh ar aon scríbhneoir mór anois a bhféadfá fear léannta a thabhairt air’ (I cannot think of any major writer at present who could be called a man of learning). – Seán Ó Ríordáin 1 ‘Brian Ó Nualláin, afterwards alias Myles na gCopaleen, alias Flann O’Brien, and, as it turned out, the most gifted bilingual genius of half a century’ – Cearbhall Ó Dálaigh, Irish President (1974–76)2 Family Background From his early years, Brian O’Nolan lived in a family environment in which education, literature, the Irish language, culture, and learning held significant importance. This milieu was reflected in the skills, talents, and accomplishments of members of the extended family. His paternal grandfather Daniel Nolan from Munster was a national teacher and taught music at the Model School in Omagh, Co. Tyrone. He was an excellent singer and an accomplished violinist. He had a special fondness for theatre and opera, performances of which he frequently attended with his young wife. A special concert was organised in his honour in Omagh prior to his transfer to Belfast in the early 1880s. In July 1867 Daniel married Jane Mellon3 a former pupil at the Omagh school and fourth daughter of James Mellon, a strong farmer from Eskeradooey in Co. Tyrone. The marriage took place at Knockmoyle Catholic Church in Cappagh parish where Jane was born. The parish priest, Rev. Charles McCauley, was the celebrant. In the national census entries for 1901 and for 1911, when Jane, also known as ‘Sinéad,’ lived with the O’Nolan family in Strabane, her competence in both Irish and English was recorded.
