We are pleased and honored to welcome at the Paléospace Museum of Villers-sur-Mer the “6th Symposium on Mesozoic and Cenozoic Decapod Crustaceans”. Villers-sur-Mer is a place universally known by specialists and amateurs of palaeontology due to its famous Vaches Noires cliffs. Villers-sur-Mer has also the distinction of being the only French seaside resort located on the Greenwich Meridian line. The Paléospace is a Museum funded in 2011 with the label Musée de France. Three main animations linked to the Time are presented: palaeontology, astronomy and nature with the neighbouring marsh. The museum is in a constant evolution. For instance, an exhibition specially dedicated to dinosaurs was opened two years ago and a planetarium will open next summer. Every year a very high quality temporary exhibition takes place during the summer period with very numerous animations during all the year. The Paléospace does not stop progressing in term of visitors (56 868 in 2015) and its notoriety is universally recognized both by the other museums as by the scientific community. We are very proud of these unexpected results. We thank the dynamism and the professionalism of the Paléospace team which is at the origin of this very great success. We wish you a very good stay at Villers-sur-Mer, a beautiful visit of the Paléospace and especially an excellent congress. Jean-Paul Durand, Mayor and President of Paléospace MOT DU MAIRE DE VILLERS-SUR-MER Nous sommes très heureux et très honorés d’accueillir à Villers-sur-Mer, le « 6e Symposium on Mesozoic and Cenozoic Decapod Crustaceans » dans le cadre du Paléospace.

  • New Hexapodid Crabs from the Eocene of Vicenza (NE Italy) (Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura, Hexapodidae)
Atti Soc. it. Sci. nat. Museo civ. Stor. nat. Milano, 151 (I): 51-75, Gennaio 2010 Antonio De Angeli *, Danièle Guinot ** & Alessandro Garassino *** New hexapodid crabs from the Eocene of Vicenza (NE Italy) (Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura, Hexapodidae) Abstract - The Hexapodidae was known to date from the Cenozoic of Veneto by Stevea cesarii Beschin, Busulini, De Angeli & Tessier, 1994, from the middle Eocene of Chiampo Valley (Vicenza), and Palaeopinnixa sp. from the upper Eocene of Possagno (Treviso). Recent discoveries from the Eocene of Vicenza area allowed to describe three new genera and four new species of hexapodids. Bellhexapus granulatus n. gen., n. sp., Eohexapus albertii n. gen., n. sp., and Eurohexapus lobatus n. gen., n. sp. from the middle Eocene of “Albanello” quarry at Nogarole Vicentino (Vicenza), and Palaeopinnixa alontensis n. sp. from the upper Eocene of Alonte (Vicenza). Bellhexapus granulatus n. gen., n. sp. and Eurohexapus lobatus n. gen., n. sp. preserve the carapace, the ventral and abdominal male parts, while Eohexapus albertii n. gen., n. sp. preserves the carapace, the ventral and abdominal female parts. Palaeopinnixa alontensis n. sp. preserves instead only the carapace. Key words : Crustacea, Decapoda, Hexapodidae, Eocene, NE Italy.

  • Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura, Retroplumidae) from the Pliocene of Reggio Emilia (N Italy)
Atti Soc. it. Sci. nat. Museo civ. Stor. nat. Milano, 152 (I): 37-44, Gennaio 2011 Antonio De Angeli*, Alessandro Garassino** & Giovanni Pasini*** Retropluma craverii (Crema, 1895) (Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura, Retroplumidae) from the Pliocene of Reggio Emilia (N Italy) Abstract - We report two specimens of retroplumid crabs from the Pliocene of Reggio Emilia (N Italy), ascribed to Retropluma craverii (Crema, 1895), known to date only from the Pliocene of Pie- monte. The re-examination of the holotype together with the good state of preservation of the studied specimens has allowed a re-description of this species, poorly known to date. Key words: Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura, Pliocene, Italy. Introduction We report, for the first time, the presence ofRetropluma craverii (Crema, 1895) from the Pliocene of Emilia Romagna (N Italy) based upon two well-preserved specimens that allow the re-description of this species. Previously, R. craverii was known only from the Pliocene of Piemonte (N Italy). Moreover, this discovery enlarges the1 number of crustacean species reported to date from Emilia Romagna and the knowledge on the distribution of this species in the palaeo-Adriatic Gulf during the Pliocene.

LARVAL GROWTH Edited by ADRIAN M.WENNER University of California, Santa Barbara OFFPRINT A.A.BALKEMA/ROTTERDAM/BOSTON DARRYL L.FELDER* / JOEL W.MARTIN** / JOSEPH W.GOY* * Department of Biology, University of Louisiana, Lafayette, USA ** Department of Biological Science, Florida State University, Tallahassee, USA PATTERNS IN EARLY POSTLARVAL DEVELOPMENT OF DECAPODS ABSTRACT Early postlarval stages may differ from larval and adult phases of the life cycle in such characteristics as body size, morphology, molting frequency, growth rate, nutrient require ments, behavior, and habitat. Primarily by way of recent studies, information on these quaUties in early postlarvae has begun to accrue, information which has not been previously summarized. The change in form (metamorphosis) that occurs between larval and postlarval life is pronounced in some decapod groups but subtle in others. However, in almost all the Deca- poda, some ontogenetic changes in locomotion, feeding, and habitat coincide with meta morphosis and early postlarval growth. The postmetamorphic (first postlarval) stage, here in termed the decapodid, is often a particularly modified transitional stage; terms such as glaucothoe, puerulus, and megalopa have been applied to it. The postlarval stages that fol low the decapodid successively approach more closely the adult form. Morphogenesis of skeletal and other superficial features is particularly apparent at each molt, but histogenesis and organogenesis in early postlarvae is appreciable within intermolt periods. Except for the development of primary and secondary sexual organs, postmetamorphic change in internal anatomy is most pronounced in the first several postlarval instars, with the degree of anatomical reorganization and development decreasing in each of the later juvenile molts.

F. 2003. — Three new genera of Indo-West Pacific Xanthidae (Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura, Xanthoidea). Zoosystema 25 (1): 131-147. ABSTRACT Cycloxanthops angustus Rathbun, 1906, C. cavatus Rathbun, 1907, and Medaeus noelensis Ward, 1934, are three Indo-West Pacific small cryptic species of xanthid crabs with extensive distributions ranging from the western Indian Ocean to Hawaii and Polynesia. Their generic status has long been uncertain. Cycloxanthops angustus has several distinctive characters that exclude this species from Cycloxanthops or Neoxanthops as currently defined, including the relatively quadrate and flattened carapace; form of the carapace areolation; structure of the anterolateral teeth and a serrulate merus on ambu latory legs. Cycloxanthops cavatus has many basic differences in morphology such as the anterolateral margin of the carapace, its frontal margin and the distinctly sculptured dorsal surface; the fingers of the chelipeds short and not pigmented black, and the distal structure of first pleopod. Medaeus noelensis too possesses diagnostic features: the narrow and rectangular basal antennular segment that fits tightly into the orbital hiatus, the short carapace frontal margin that folds downwards and inwards and a special peeling tooth on the KEYWORDS right chela for opening gastropods. This present study reappraises the taxo- Crustacea, nomic position of these three enigmatic species and shows that they are not Decapoda, related to the genera they are currently assigned.
