F. 2003. — Three new genera of Indo-West Pacific Xanthidae (Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura, Xanthoidea). Zoosystema 25 (1): 131-147. ABSTRACT Cycloxanthops angustus Rathbun, 1906, C. cavatus Rathbun, 1907, and Medaeus noelensis Ward, 1934, are three Indo-West Pacific small cryptic species of xanthid crabs with extensive distributions ranging from the western Indian Ocean to Hawaii and Polynesia. Their generic status has long been uncertain. Cycloxanthops angustus has several distinctive characters that exclude this species from Cycloxanthops or Neoxanthops as currently defined, including the relatively quadrate and flattened carapace; form of the carapace areolation; structure of the anterolateral teeth and a serrulate merus on ambu latory legs. Cycloxanthops cavatus has many basic differences in morphology such as the anterolateral margin of the carapace, its frontal margin and the distinctly sculptured dorsal surface; the fingers of the chelipeds short and not pigmented black, and the distal structure of first pleopod. Medaeus noelensis too possesses diagnostic features: the narrow and rectangular basal antennular segment that fits tightly into the orbital hiatus, the short carapace frontal margin that folds downwards and inwards and a special peeling tooth on the KEYWORDS right chela for opening gastropods. This present study reappraises the taxo- Crustacea, nomic position of these three enigmatic species and shows that they are not Decapoda, related to the genera they are currently assigned. Consequently, three new Brachyura, Xanthoidea, monotypic genera are established Marratha n. gen., with M. angusta Xanthidae, n. comb.; Jacforus n. gen., with/, cavatus n. comb.; and Danielea n. gen., with Indo-West Pacific, D. noelensis n. comb., and their relationship with each other as well as new genera, new combinations. affiliated taxa are discussed. INTRODUCTION only remark (Guinot 1968: 700) was that C. angustus probably belonged to another genus. Among the Indo-West Pacific Xanthidae This systematic uncertainty was only partially MacLeay, 1838 s.s., Cycloxanthops angustus resolved when Serene (1968), in a checklist of Rathbun, 1906, C cavatus Rathbun, 1907, and Indo-West Pacific Brachyura, tentatively placed Medaeus noelensis Ward, 1934 are problematic C. angustus and C. cavatus in Neoxanthops. species. Later, she revised Guinot (1967a: 374) revised Medaeus Dana, Cycloxanthops and established Neoxanthops for a 1851, and established Paramedaeus to accommo number of Indo-West Pacific species, but Guinot date Medaeus simplex A. Milne Edwards, 1873 (1968: 700) did not attribute C angustus or and M. planifrons Sakai, 1965. But M. noelensis C. cavatus to either of these genera. Instead, her Ward, 1934 was retained in its original genus by 132 ZOOSYSTEMA • 2003 • 25(1) New Indo-West Pacific Xanthidae (Crustacea, Decapoda) Guinot, a decision that she was not entirely satis fied with because in her opinion this species pos sessed some affinities with Paramedaeus (see Guinot 1967a: 373). Nevertheless M. noelensis was tentatively listed by Serene (1968: 76), under Paramedaeus Guinot, 1967, but he later (Serene 1984) considered this inclusion dubious. Although the taxonomic problem was discussed subse quently (see Serene 1984), albeit rather briefly, P. noelensis was never formally assigned to a new genus and has merely been retained in Paramedaeus with doubt. The purpose of this study is to review the mor phology of Cycloxanthops angustus, Cycloxanthops cavatus, and Medaeus noelensis, and in the light of current knowledge, resolve the taxonomic en passe. The specimens used in the present study are deposited in the Museum national d'Histoire naturelle, Paris (MNHN); The Natural History Museum, London (NHM); Bernice P. Bishop Museum, Honolulu (BPBM); Zoological Reference Collection, Raffles Museum, National University of Singapore (ZRC); National Taiwan Ocean University, Keelung (NTOU); and US Museum of Natural History, Washington DC (USNM). All measurements are of the carapace length (cl) and width (cw) respectively. The abbreviations Gl and G2 are for the male first and second pleopods (gonopods) respectively. The zones of the carapace (IM, 2M, 3M, IF, 2F, 1-4L, and 2P) are divided according to Dana (1853) and Serene (1984). LARVAL GROWTH Edited by ADRIAN M.WENNER University of California, Santa Barbara OFFPRINT A.A.BALKEMA/ROTTERDAM/BOSTON DARRYL L.FELDER* / JOEL W.MARTIN** / JOSEPH W.GOY* * Department of Biology, University of Louisiana, Lafayette, USA ** Department of Biological Science, Florida State University, Tallahassee, USA PATTERNS IN EARLY POSTLARVAL DEVELOPMENT OF DECAPODS ABSTRACT Early postlarval stages may differ from larval and adult phases of the life cycle in such characteristics as body size, morphology, molting frequency, growth rate, nutrient require ments, behavior, and habitat. Primarily by way of recent studies, information on these quaUties in early postlarvae has begun to accrue, information which has not been previously summarized. The change in form (metamorphosis) that occurs between larval and postlarval life is pronounced in some decapod groups but subtle in others. However, in almost all the Deca- poda, some ontogenetic changes in locomotion, feeding, and habitat coincide with meta morphosis and early postlarval growth. The postmetamorphic (first postlarval) stage, here in termed the decapodid, is often a particularly modified transitional stage; terms such as glaucothoe, puerulus, and megalopa have been applied to it. The postlarval stages that fol low the decapodid successively approach more closely the adult form. Morphogenesis of skeletal and other superficial features is particularly apparent at each molt, but histogenesis and organogenesis in early postlarvae is appreciable within intermolt periods. Except for the development of primary and secondary sexual organs, postmetamorphic change in internal anatomy is most pronounced in the first several postlarval instars, with the degree of anatomical reorganization and development decreasing in each of the later juvenile molts.

  • Studies on Decapod Crustacea from the Indian River Region of Florida
JOURNAL OF CRUSTACEAN BIOLOGY, 1(1): 28-50, 1981 STUDIES ON DECAPOD CRUSTACEA FROM THE INDIAN RIVER REGION OF FLORIDA. XX. MICROPANOPE BARBADENSIS (RATHBUN, 1921): THE COMPLETE LARVAL DEVELOPMENT UNDER LABORATOR Y CONDITIONS (BRACHYURA, XANTHIDAE) Robert H. Gore, Cindy Lee Van Dover, and Kim A . Wilson ABSTRACT The complete larval development of Micropanope barbadensis (Rathbun, 1921) , a small , western Atlantic, coral-inhabiting xanthid crab, is described and illustrated based on larvae reared in the laboratory. The species passed through 3 or 4 zoeal and one megalopal stage over a 24-32 day period at 20°e. At 15 and 25°C the larvae did not survive beyond the first or second stage, respectively. The duration of abbreviated and normal development periods is discussed. Zoeae of Micropanope barbadensis exhibit an antennal exopod:protopod ratio intermedia te in length and are therefore not assignable to any of the four categories delineated by Aikawa. A fifth category , Group E , is proposed. Criteria used to distinguish larvae of the genus Micropanope from other xanthid genera, as well as the taxonomic position of M. barbadensis. are considered. This is the fir st specie s in the genus Micropanope senSII {af o for which the complete larval development in the laboratory has been obtained. The genus Micropanope is a widely distributed, essentially tropical taxon of very small crabs, many species of which are associated with coral or coralline substrata. Rathbun (1930) listed about 9 or 10 species from the western Atlantic, but the systematics of the genus requires revision, so the ultimate number remains presently in doubt.

F. 2003. — Three new genera of Indo-West Pacific Xanthidae (Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura, Xanthoidea). Zoosystema 25 (1) : 131-147. Cycloxanthops angustus has several distinctive characters that exclude this species from Cycloxanthops or Neoxanthops as currently defined, including the relatively quadrate and flattened carapace; form of the carapace areolation; structure of the anterolateral teeth and a serrulate merus on ambu- latory legs. Cycloxanthops cavatus has many basic differences in morphology such as the anterolateral margin of the carapace, its frontal margin and the distinctly sculptured dorsal surface; the fingers of the chelipeds short and not pigmented black, and the distal structure of first pleopod. Medaeus noelensis too possesses diagnostic features: the narrow and rectangular basal antennular segment that fits tightly into the orbital hiatus, the short carapace frontal margin that folds downwards and inwards and a special peeling tooth on the KEY WORDS right chela for opening gastropods. This present study reappraises the taxo- Crustacea, nomic position of these three enigmatic species and shows that they are not Decapoda, Brachyura, related to the genera they are currently assigned.

NAT. CROAT. VOL. 14 Suppl. 1 1¿159 ZAGREB June 2005 THE RECLASSIFICATION OF BRACHYURAN CRABS (CRUSTACEA: DECAPODA: BRACHYURA) ZDRAVKO [TEV^I] Laco Sercio 19, HR-52210 Rovinj, Croatia [tev~i}, Z.: The reclassification of brachyuran crabs (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura). Nat. Croat., Vol. 14, Suppl. 1, 1–159, 2005, Zagreb. A reclassification of brachyuran crabs (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura) including a re-ap- praisal of their whole systematics, re-assessment of the systematic status and position of all extant and extinct suprageneric taxa and their redescription, as well as a description of new taxa, has been undertaken. A great number of new higher taxa have been established and the majority of higher taxa have had their systematic status and position changed. Key words: brachyuran crabs, Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura, systematics, revision, reclassifi- cation. [tev~i}, Z.: Reklasifikacija kratkorepih rakova (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura). Nat. Croat., Vol. 14, Suppl. 1, 1–159, 2005, Zagreb. Klju~ne rije~i: kratkorepi raci, Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura, sistematika, revizija, reklasi- fikacija INTRODUCTION Brachyuran crabs (Crustacea: Decapoda: Brachyura) are one of the most diverse animal groups at the infra-order level. They exhibit an outstanding diversity in the numbers of extant and extinct taxa at all categorical levels. Recently, especially dur- ing the past several decades, judging from the number of publications and new taxa described, the knowledge of their systematics has increased rapidly.

During “Huinay Fiordos”-expeditions between 2005 and 2014 benthic Decapoda (Crustacea: Malacostraca) were collected down to 40 m depth using minimal inva- sive sampling methods. The 889 specimens were attributed to 54 species. The in- fraorder Brachyura was the most speciose with 27 species, followed by Anomura with 18 species, Caridea with 8 species and Dendrobranchiata with one species. Taxonomic examination was complemented by in-situ photo documentation and close-up pictures with extended depth of field taken from sampled individuals showing the species-specific features. Faunistic data was evaluated with location maps and sample localities are discussed according to existing literature, often resulting in the extension of known distribution ranges of various species.
