Based on carapace features, this taxon is placed in the subfamily Actaeinae, family Xanthidae MacLeay, 1838. Species attributed to this genus are known from Eocene reef environments in Europe. Preservation of crustacean remains in this kind of environment is very rare, and it could explain scarcity of specimens of this genus. For the fi rst time, pictures of types of this genus described during the XIX century and the fi rst decades of the XX century are presented. A study of recently collected specimens from the Eocene of Veneto (Italy) allows to clarify relationships between Phlyctenodes krenneri Lörenthey, 1898 and P. dalpiazi Fabiani, 1911. Presence of P. tuberculosus Milne Edwards, 1862 among the new material is documented. The other known species of this genus, P. hantkeni Lörenthey, 1898 is placed in Pseudophlyctenodes new genus on the basis of differences in morphological features. During a faunal survey of the Kerama いroup in 1978 and 1992-1994,S. Nagai and K. Nomura made intensive collections of decapod crustaceans. The material includes 299 species representing 37 families,excluding the Chirostylidae and Galatheidae. Of these, 47 species remain to be unidentified, because they include possibly undescribed or taxonomically proolematical species. First Japanese records are reported for the following 21 species, most of wmch are considered to be widely distributed in tropical and subtropical waters of the West Pacific or Indo-West Pacific: Odontozona ensifera, Discias exul, Leptochela irrobusta, Hamodactylus boshmai’ Periclimenaeus djiboutensis, P. hecate, Periclimenes amboinensis, P. cristimanus, P. novaecaledoniae, P. longirostris, Alpheus ehlersii, A. pareuchirus, A, tenuipes, Parabetaeus culliereti, Axiopsis serratifrons, Pylopaguropsis fimbriata, Petrolisthes extremus, Hyastenus uncifer, Tiarinia dana, Portunus mariei and Hypocolpus rugosus. Primarily by way of recent studies, information on these quaUties in early postlarvae has begun to accrue, information which has not been previously summarized. The change in form (metamorphosis) that occurs between larval and postlarval life is pronounced in some decapod groups but subtle in others. However, in almost all the Deca- poda, some ontogenetic changes in locomotion, feeding, and habitat coincide with meta morphosis and early postlarval growth. The postmetamorphic (first postlarval) stage, here in termed the decapodid, is often a particularly modified transitional stage; terms such as glaucothoe, puerulus, and megalopa have been applied to it. The postlarval stages that fol low the decapodid successively approach more closely the adult form. Morphogenesis of skeletal and other superficial features is particularly apparent at each molt, but histogenesis and organogenesis in early postlarvae is appreciable within intermolt periods. Except for the development of primary and secondary sexual organs, postmetamorphic change in internal anatomy is most pronounced in the first several postlarval instars, with the degree of anatomical reorganization and development decreasing in each of the later juvenile molts. -

Medaeus danielita new species, is similar to Medaeus aztec Davie, 1997, but can be easily differentiated from it by the structure of its carapace, ambulatory legs, and male first gonopods. It is only the second species of the genus known from the Philippines. RÉSUMÉ Une nouvelle espèce de Xanthidae du genre Medaeus Dana, 1852 est décrite de la mer de Bohol aux Philippines. Medaeus danielita nouvelle espèce ressemble à Medaeus aztec Davie, 1997, mais peut en être facilement différenciée par la structure de sa carapace, ses pattes ambulatoires et le premier gonopode male. Elle avait, jusqu'à maintenant, été confondue avec H. rugosus (Henderson, 1893). Sa comparaison avec les formes voisines amène à élever au rang d'espèce la sous-espèce stenocoelus Guinot-Dumortier, 1960, de H. rugosus. Hypocolpus pararugosus, new species from the Indo-west Pacific (Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura, Xanthidae) Abstract. — A new species belonging to the genus Hypocolpus, H. pararugosus, is described after specimens from New Caledonia and Sri Lanka. It had, until now, been confused with H. rugosus (Henderson, 1893). The comparison of this species with closely related ones leads to the elevation of the subspecies rugosus stenocoelus Guinot-Dumortier, 1960, to full species rank. F. 2003. — Three new genera of Indo-West Pacific Xanthidae (Crustacea, Decapoda, Brachyura, Xanthoidea). Zoosystema 25 (1): 131-147. ABSTRACT Cycloxanthops angustus Rathbun, 1906, C. cavatus Rathbun, 1907, and Medaeus noelensis Ward, 1934, are three Indo-West Pacific small cryptic species of xanthid crabs with extensive distributions ranging from the western Indian Ocean to Hawaii and Polynesia. Their generic status has long been uncertain. Cycloxanthops angustus has several distinctive characters that exclude this species from Cycloxanthops or Neoxanthops as currently defined, including the relatively quadrate and flattened carapace; form of the carapace areolation; structure of the anterolateral teeth and a serrulate merus on ambu latory legs. Cycloxanthops cavatus has many basic differences in morphology such as the anterolateral margin of the carapace, its frontal margin and the distinctly sculptured dorsal surface; the fingers of the chelipeds short and not pigmented black, and the distal structure of first pleopod. Medaeus noelensis too possesses diagnostic features: the narrow and rectangular basal antennular segment that fits tightly into the orbital hiatus, the short carapace frontal margin that folds downwards and inwards and a special peeling tooth on the KEYWORDS right chela for opening gastropods. This present study reappraises the taxo- Crustacea, nomic position of these three enigmatic species and shows that they are not Decapoda, related to the genera they are currently assigned. -
Studies on Decapod Crustacea from the Indian River Region of Florida

MICROPANOPE BARBADENSIS (RATHBUN, 1921): THE COMPLETE LARVAL DEVELOPMENT UNDER LABORATOR Y CONDITIONS (BRACHYURA, XANTHIDAE) Robert H. Gore, Cindy Lee Van Dover, and Kim A . Wilson ABSTRACT The complete larval development of Micropanope barbadensis (Rathbun, 1921) , a small , western Atlantic, coral-inhabiting xanthid crab, is described and illustrated based on larvae reared in the laboratory. The species passed through 3 or 4 zoeal and one megalopal stage over a 24-32 day period at 20°e. At 15 and 25°C the larvae did not survive beyond the first or second stage, respectively. The duration of abbreviated and normal development periods is discussed. Zoeae of Micropanope barbadensis exhibit an antennal exopod:protopod ratio intermedia te in length and are therefore not assignable to any of the four categories delineated by Aikawa. A fifth category , Group E , is proposed. Criteria used to distinguish larvae of the genus Micropanope from other xanthid genera, as well as the taxonomic position of M. barbadensis. are considered. This is the fir st specie s in the genus Micropanope senSII {af o for which the complete larval development in the laboratory has been obtained. The genus Micropanope is a widely distributed, essentially tropical taxon of very small crabs, many species of which are associated with coral or coralline substrata. Rathbun (1930) listed about 9 or 10 species from the western Atlantic, but the systematics of the genus requires revision, so the ultimate number remains presently in doubt. -

This is central to the goal of supporting and promoting sustainable coastal development in the region, as well as contributing to the global base of marine science. The journal publishes original research articles dealing with all aspects of marine science and coastal manage- ment. Topics include, but are not limited to: theoretical studies, oceanography, marine biology and ecology, fisheries, recovery and restoration processes, legal and institutional frameworks, and interactions/relationships between humans and the coastal and marine environment.
