Der er siden udgivelsen af 1. udgave løbende sket en udvidelse med nye koder. Dette er dels sket efter brugerhenvendelser i takt med introduktion af nye teknikker og metoder, dels – og ikke mindst – i forbindelse med den kliniske validering af DRG og DAGS afregningssystemerne samt i forbindelse med de årlige opdateringer af den nordiske stamklassifikation. Klassifikationen er således blevet udvidet med et betydeligt antal ,,danske“ koder, men bygger stadig på samme struktur og principper som den nordiske klassifikation, der indgår i grundlaget for den fælles- nordiske medicinalstatistik. De mange ændringer har hidtil kun været tilgængelige i den elektronisk version af operationsklassifikationen, og Sundhedsstyrelsen har derfor nu fundet det nød- vendigt at foretage en gennemgribende revision af klassifikationen.
