A Zen Master in Meditation, Shi K’o (Sekkaku). 10th Century Zen Buddhism SÇtÇ Zen Essays from the ShÇbÇgenzÇ by DÇgen Zenji [DÇgen Zenji (1200-1253) was the founder of the SÇtÇ school of Zen Buddhism. This essay is part of a remarkable collection of essays called ShÇbÇgenzÇ, or “Treasury of the Eye of True Teaching.” The commentary introducing the essays is by the translator Thomas Cleary.] The Issue at Hand (GenjÇkÇan) The term genjÇkÇan seems to appear first in ninth-century China and is often used in Japanese SÇtÇ Zen to refer to present being as the topic of meditation or the issue of Zen. Gen means “manifestation” or “present,” jÇ means “become.” GenjÇ means actuality—being as is, at hand, or accomplished, as of an accomplished fact. KÇan is a common Zen word which is often left untranslated, having to some extent become a naturalized English word. KÇ means official, public, or open, as opposed to private or personal; an means a consideration, or a considered decision. A kÇan in standard literary Chinese means an official report or an issue under consideration. The term was adopted in Zen with much the same meanings, only transposed into the frame of reference of Zen tradition and experience. GenjÇkÇan is one of the most popular and oft-quoted essays in ShÇbÇgenzÇ. Written to a lay disciple, it contains a number of key points stated in a most concise fashion. The very first paragraph contains a complete outline of Zen, in a covert presentation of the so-called “five ranks” (go i) device of the original Chinese SÇtÇ Zen school. -

11 Koan and Kensho in the Rinzai Zen Curriculum G. VICTOR SOGEN HORI LCCORDING to a widely accepted model, a koan i s a clever psycho- logical device designed to induce satori or kensho. The koan is said to pose to the Ze n practitione r a parado x unsolvabl e by the rational , intellectualizing mind. Drive n int o a n eve r more desperat e corne r b y his repeate d futil e at - tempts to solve what cannot be rationally solved, the practitioner finally breaks through the barrier of rational intellection to the realm of preconceptual an d prelinguistic consciousnes s variousl y calle d pur e consciousness , no-mind , without-thinking, or emptiness. Thi s breakthrough i s called satori or kensho. The cleverness of the koan consists in the fact that rather than attacking reason and logi c fro m outside, th e koa n use s reaso n t o driv e itsel f int o a self - contradiction and cause its own destruction. In this picture, the koan is funda- mentally an instrument and has no use except as a means for psychologically inducing kensho. These two notions—the koan as nonrational, psychological instrument, an d kensho a s th e breakthroug h t o nonrational , noncognitive , pure consciousness—nicely support each other.1 However, thes e conceptions o f koan an d kensho were criticized long ago . I believe that this is because the Buddha’s basic approach was to prescribe a different treatment for every spiritual ailment, much as a doctor prescribes a different medicine for every medical ailment. Thus his teachings were always appropriate for the particu lar suffering individual and for the time at which the teaching was given, and over the ages not one of his prescriptions has failed to relieve the suffering to which it was addressed. Ever since the Buddha’s Great Demise over twenty-five hundred years ago, his message of wisdom and compassion has spread through out the world. -

CHAPTER FOUR THE BUDDHIST PHILOSOPHERS The foregoing was a beginning sketch of Mou’s opinion of what the Buddha wanted to teach and how he went about gradually commu- nicating it. However Buddhist philosophers have not been able to agree on precisely what the Buddha meant to teach us. When Mou reads through the history of their scholastic disputations, his eyes pick out what he thinks is a very significant constant: though the Bud- dhist philosophers concur on some important things, particularly how the universe looks when viewed with prajñā, they disagree very conse- quentially on the topic of “buddha-nature” ( foxing 佛性), namely how much ordinary creatures like us have in common with buddhas and how it is that we can attain buddhahood.1 This may sound aridly metaphysical, but to Mou and the Buddhist commentators, it is extremely weighty and deeply practical too. Trans- lated into concrete terms, the question of buddha-nature amounts to asking, If I want to be a buddha, how much do I have to change? What are the conditions and constraints? Do I have to acquire a special kind of body, or will any body do? Do I have to radically renovate the structure of my mind, or is it enough just to make relatively minor changes to the one I have now? Will it take aeons, or could it happen soon? Will I have to go to a different world? Will my chances depend on luck, or can I exert much control over them?2 1 Mou sometimes refers to these as, on the one hand, the question of how to medi- tate or or contemplate things ( guanfa 觀法), which I have been explaining as the ques- tion of how prajñā sees things, which is the subject matter of “prajñā learning” (boruo xue 般若學), and on the other hand the “ontological” questions of liberation ( jietuo 解脫) and buddhaphala ( foguo 佛果) (FB, 625–47). -

Hakuin Ekaku (1685-1768), a Rinzai-Zen master. lived in the middle of the Yedo Period. In one of his sermons in kana syllabary, Neboke-no- Mezame ("The Dozer Awakes") (1749), Hakuin, then sixty-five years old, for the first time announced his adoption of a new koan, "The Sound of A Single Hand," in place of the traditional "Joshu's Mu" koan, as a device for Awakening practice, as follows: Viewing contemporary Buddhists' ways of practice, we notice most of them so worldly-minded as to make the pursuit of fame and gain their principles; to help others in the affairs of money and land; some bonzes of low gift go so far as to misconduct themselves in a manner worse than some lay people. The Buddha Dharma is at a low ebb; Sakyamuni's original intent is far from being at work. The old-fellow-in-Hara's "The Sound of A Single Hand," Bodhidharma's nine years' wall-contemplation, Mahakasyapa's smile in response to Sakyamuni's holding up a flower-things like these are the last things they think of. No wonder they throw all these things into the western sea, curry favor with lay parishioners, and make it their single concern to pass through this world. Even if they happen to see Buddhist scriptures or Zen masters' recorded sayings, they know nothing of their meaning. -

Koan, Hua-T'ou, and Kensho
Koan, Hua-t’ou, and Kensho Ama Samy Bodhi Zendo, Perumalmalai, Kodaikanal, India The zen of ‘encounter dialogue’ (in koan stories, koan dialogues and transmission stories) is a captivating form of zen, more so than the Soto variety of just sitting or ‘silent illumination’. Koan zen is colourful and exciting to our imagination though the Soto shikantaza is the more widely practiced form. The practice of shikantaza or just sitting has its own problems, but the koan practice is more problematic and provokes many questions. Here I would like to focus on the koan practice. I will not be focusing on the problems of koan history, culture or the social-political realities but rather on practice as such. When zen developed in China in the 6th century, it was rather the Indian form of dhyana or meditation, which was silent seated meditation. Gradually the pragmatic students and masters began asking questions as to what was unique to zen, and how the Buddha-nature was present in sentient beings and what constituted liberation and enlightenment. It led to a radical simplification of doctrines, to awakening in the here and now and to oneself as no other than the Buddha-nature. It involved the existential question of trust and faith embracing the self, the teacher, and the teaching. This lead to the so-called ‘encounter dialogues’—questions and answers between students and masters, often the master’s word or gesture provoking a ‘sudden’ awakening in the inquirer. Mazu Daoyi (709—788) seems to have been the pre-eminent master of such dialogue practice. -
