Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

SABATHAN – WANTS TO KEEP THE ANCIENT SPIRIT ALIVE One of the most legendary figures of the Belgian Black Metal-scene is Lord Sabathan, mostly known for his time with Enthroned, one of the oldest Belgian Black Metal bands. Nowadays, he's busy as hell with Slaughter Messiah, Heinous and Sabathan, a project that resurrected the old-Enthroned stuff. Time for a chat with this living legend.(JOKKE) Hail Sabathan! You have been quite busy the past few months due to recordings for a new Slaughter Messiah album among other things. What can we expect from this new release? Expect just pure fuckin’ Ancient Metal of Death! I think this is the album I am the most proud off since Enthroned’s 1997 album “Towards the skullthrone of Satan”. We are busy with the record since November 2018. Everything is done except the graphic material. We still have to finish some details, but this album - believe me - will surprise more than one. The title for our first full length album will be “Cursed to the pyre” and contains eight songs of pure aggression clocking in at around 45 minutes of music. The record will be released through High Roller Records in January 2020. We took our time but it’s for giving the best. After you quit Enthroned in 2006, you played in Black/Thrash Metal band Dawn Of Crucifixion, Heavy/Speed Metal outfit Horacle and Slaughter Messiah. How is playing in these smaller and more underground metal bands compared to Enthroned, who were already a well-established name in the Extreme Metal scene? The popularity doesn’t matter, the most important thing for me is playing from the heart and the soul and that my music has a soul.

Especially the Old Norse / Old Germanic neo-heathen (Ásatrú) movement has gained popularity in some circles and has even been officially accepted as a religion in Iceland and Norway among others1. In the world of music, this renaissance has led to the development of several sub-genres of metal music, the so-called ‘folk metal’, ‘Viking Metal’ and ‘Pagan Metal’ genres. Peter Stanković Vpliv nordijske mitologije na heavy metal glasbo Diplomsko delo Ljubljana, 2011 ZAHVALA Zahvaljujem se mentorju dr. Vpliv nordijske mitologije na heavy metal glasbo Skozi obdobje zadnjih štiridesetih let je popularna glasba postala pomembna pri produkciji in razširjanju podobe Vikingov in s tem tudi nordijske mitologije. Zraven filma in literature je namreč ravno področje težkega rocka in heavy metala tisto, ki izkazuje največ zanimanja za severnjaško kulturo. Značilnosti, ki jih tipično povezujemo s popularno podobo Vikingov – mačizem, kaos, svoboda in nespoštovanje avtoritet – so namreč zelo blizu pripadnikom heavy metal subkulture. Prav tako obstajajo povezave med popularno podobo Vikingov in barbarov iz fantazijske literature in filma, ki je še eno izmed področij, iz katerega so pripadniki heavy metala črpali navdih za svoja besedila. V diplomi bom pokazal, na kakšne načine se heavy metal skupine lotevajo elementov nordijske mitologije, kako je potekal vpliv nordijske mitologije na popularno kulturo skozi zgodovino in kje vse potekajo vzporednice med heavy metalom in nordijsko mitologijo. Od blizu bom razčlenil tri albume treh pomembnejših skupin heavy metala, ki uporabljajo podobe iz nordijske mitologije in poskušal oceniti njihov vpliv na popularno glasbo. Ključne besede: heavy metal, nordijska mitologija, subkultura, popularna glasba. Uczestniczyłem w pierwszej edycji Ogólnopolskiej Konferencji Naukowej , zorganizowanej w czerwcu 2017 roku na Uniwersytecie Pedagogicznym im. Komisji Edukacji Narodowej w Krakowie, jako słuchacz, miłośnik muzyki metalowej oraz jako badacz tego obszaru kultury z bez mała trzydziestoletnim stażem. Mniej więcej bowiem od dziesiątego roku ży- cia poszukuję albumów z muzyką metalową, analizuję ich okładki, poddaję reflek- sji zawartość tekstową i przesłanie ideowe, porównuję ze sobą rozmaite zjawiska, wymieniam poglądy z przyjaciółmi i znajomymi, a teraz również z innymi kolegami badaczami z różnych ośrodków akademickich. Dodam tylko na koniec tej osobistej introdukcji, iż zalążki mojej działalności na tym polu (najpierw oczywiście domoro- słej, a z czasem coraz bardziej świadomej i ukierunkowanej)Keeper pojawiły Of The się Seven w drugiej Keys. This multitude of sub-genres will inevitably lead to musicians, fans and even researchers no longer being able to differentiate between the genres. With Viking, pagan, and folk metal, this interesting process of fusion is already taking place, although it is possible to distinguish Viking and pagan at least from folk metal. Keywords: instrumentation, metal sub-genres, musical analysis, popular music introDuCtion During the last few decades many different metal sub-genres have developed, from the classic, and especially from the extreme, metal genre. Comprising bands such as Ensiferum, Finntroll, Korpiklaani and Turisas – surprisingly only Finnish bands – so-called folk metal is one of these sub-genres, which became part of the metal mainstream during the 2000s.1 For Spracklen the popularity of Finnish folk metal is based on commercialization, while other possible reasons could be the national distinction from Norwegian black and Swedish death metal, or, at least in Finland, a phase of increased inclusion of folk elements in popular music. “The combination of a nationally institutionalized folk tradition and the transnational genre of […] metal”2 is also mentioned by Neilson as a reason for the success of Finnish folk metal.
