    SABATHAN – WANTS TO KEEP THE ANCIENT SPIRIT ALIVE One of the most legendary figures of the Belgian Black Metal-scene is Lord Sabathan, mostly known for his time with Enthroned, one of the oldest Belgian Black Metal bands. Nowadays, he's busy as hell with Slaughter Messiah, Heinous and Sabathan, a project that resurrected the old-Enthroned stuff. Time for a chat with this living legend.(JOKKE) Hail Sabathan! You have been quite busy the past few months due to recordings for a new Slaughter Messiah album among other things. What can we expect from this new release? Expect just pure fuckin’ Ancient Metal of Death! I think this is the album I am the most proud off since Enthroned’s 1997 album “Towards the skullthrone of Satan”. We are busy with the record since November 2018. Everything is done except the graphic material. We still have to finish some details, but this album - believe me - will surprise more than one. The title for our first full length album will be “Cursed to the pyre” and contains eight songs of pure aggression clocking in at around 45 minutes of music. The record will be released through High Roller Records in January 2020. We took our time but it’s for giving the best. After you quit Enthroned in 2006, you played in Black/Thrash Metal band Dawn Of Crucifixion, Heavy/Speed Metal outfit Horacle and Slaughter Messiah. How is playing in these smaller and more underground metal bands compared to Enthroned, who were already a well-established name in the Extreme Metal scene? The popularity doesn’t matter, the most important thing for me is playing from the heart and the soul and that my music has a soul.

Uczestniczyłem w pierwszej edycji Ogólnopolskiej Konferencji Naukowej , zorganizowanej w czerwcu 2017 roku na Uniwersytecie Pedagogicznym im. Komisji Edukacji Narodowej w Krakowie, jako słuchacz, miłośnik muzyki metalowej oraz jako badacz tego obszaru kultury z bez mała trzydziestoletnim stażem. Mniej więcej bowiem od dziesiątego roku ży- cia poszukuję albumów z muzyką metalową, analizuję ich okładki, poddaję reflek- sji zawartość tekstową i przesłanie ideowe, porównuję ze sobą rozmaite zjawiska, wymieniam poglądy z przyjaciółmi i znajomymi, a teraz również z innymi kolegami badaczami z różnych ośrodków akademickich. Dodam tylko na koniec tej osobistej introdukcji, iż zalążki mojej działalności na tym polu (najpierw oczywiście domoro- słej, a z czasem coraz bardziej świadomej i ukierunkowanej)Keeper pojawiły Of The się Seven w drugiej Keys. DISTINGUISHING POSSIBILITIES FOR METAL SUB-GENRES Izvorni znanstveni članak / Original Scholarly Paper UDK: 78.036 "19/20" aBStraCt The different sub-genres of metal music, which have formed in the last decades, are not only of interest due to their diverse and unique characteristics, but also evidence a variety in metal music whereby its clichéd black and gloomy world gains a bit of color. This multitude of sub-genres will inevitably lead to musicians, fans and even researchers no longer being able to differentiate between the genres. With Viking, pagan, and folk metal, this interesting process of fusion is already taking place, although it is possible to distinguish Viking and pagan at least from folk metal. Keywords: instrumentation, metal sub-genres, musical analysis, popular music introDuCtion During the last few decades many different metal sub-genres have developed, from the classic, and especially from the extreme, metal genre. Comprising bands such as Ensiferum, Finntroll, Korpiklaani and Turisas – surprisingly only Finnish bands – so-called folk metal is one of these sub-genres, which became part of the metal mainstream during the 2000s.1 For Spracklen the popularity of Finnish folk metal is based on commercialization, while other possible reasons could be the national distinction from Norwegian black and Swedish death metal, or, at least in Finland, a phase of increased inclusion of folk elements in popular music. “The combination of a nationally institutionalized folk tradition and the transnational genre of […] metal”2 is also mentioned by Neilson as a reason for the success of Finnish folk metal.

    Notes From The Underground: A Cultural, Political, and Aesthetic Mapping of Underground Music. Date:…………………………………………………….. 2 Abstract The term ‗underground music‘, in my account, connects various forms of music-making that exist largely outside ‗mainstream‘ cultural discourse, such as Drone Metal, Free Improvisation, Power Electronics, and DIY Noise, amongst others. Its connotations of concealment and obscurity indicate what I argue to be the music‘s central tenets of cultural reclusion, political independence, and aesthetic experiment. In response to a lack of scholarly discussion of this music, my thesis provides a cultural, political, and aesthetic mapping of the underground, whose existence as a coherent entity is being both argued for and ‗mapped‘ here. Outlining the historical context, but focusing on the underground in the digital age, I use a wide range of interdisciplinary research methodologies , including primary interviews, musical analysis, and a critical engagement with various pertinent theoretical sources. In my account, the underground emerges as a marginal, ‗antermediated‘ cultural ‗scene‘ based both on the web and in large urban centres, the latter of whose concentration of resources facilitates the growth of various localised underground scenes. I explore the radical anti-capitalist politics of many underground figures, whilst also examining their financial ties to big business and the state(s). This contradiction is critically explored, with three conclusions being drawn. First, the underground is shown in Part II to be so marginal as to escape, in effect, post- Fordist capitalist subsumption.

Deeply unintelligible guttural sounds, illegible logos—the bands do everything they can not to be understood or appreciated. Yet black metal’s dedication to absolute darkness in no way hampers its increasing acceptance in the realms of visibility and the visual arts. At this rate, head bangers can look forward to a perfectly legible future in spotless white cubes. The song is called War, the band, Burzum. Backed by drums, the sound of massive guitar overdrive blares from the speakers. Then, a shrieking voice joins in. It sounds like a Muppet is being strangled, although I realize that someone is in deadly earnest here. The singer is alone. Varg Vikernes, the only member of the Norwegian band Burzum, plays the guitar and drums. He is now in jail for killing Øystein Aarseth, the guitarist of black metal band Mayhem, and for setting fire to churches. In prison, he is devoting himself to the future of the Aryan race and his own Weltanschauung.[1] His writings and portraits reach the outside world through a website hosted in Russia. I first read about the Norwegian group Mayhem and their legendary demo album Pure Fucking Armageddon back in 1987, in the Dutch magazine Aardschok/Metal Hammer. It was a time when bands recorded their own demos and distributed them on tape and an intensive network sprang up between small cells of bands and youths— mostly guys—who also wanted a band of their own: holding a guitar, reinventing yourself, making lots of noise, lulling your mind to sleep.
