(Volumes 1–146) the Following Index Is Or An Index to Authors in the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record 1870–2015 (Volumes 1–146) The following index is organized alphabetically by author and comprises only those articles attributed to an author by name and published in The Record from 1870–2015, volumes 1–146. For a complete listing of articles published in The Record, consult the Index by Title. Please note that there are occasional inconsistencies in an author’s name. In general, the index lists the author’s name as it appeared in The Record. If there was variation in an author’s name between the table of contents and the first page of an article, the least abbreviated version of the name is used. In the case of a prolific author who signed articles in various ways, the most customary usage has been followed. For generations the Hudson Bay Com- pany found fabulous profits in the Indian fur trade, from the Pacific to the Rockies, studiously guarding the country's secrets, and decrying the land as unproductive and unwholesome. It was their clear intent, when settlement became inevitable, to turn over the whole territory to England; and no American statesman was sufficiently alert to thwart their well-laid: schemes.

The Ohio State University 1970 Approved by Adviser Department of English ACKNOWLEDGMENTS X wish to thank first those to whom I am indebted in Scotland. Had it not been for the assistance and co-operation of Mr. Antony S. Chambers, chairman of W. & R. Chambers Ltd, this study would never have become a reality. Not only did he initially give an unknown American permission to study the firm's archives, but he has subsequently provided whatever I needed to facilitate my research. Gracious and generous, he is a worthy descendent of the first Robert Chambers. All associated with the Chambers firm— directors and warehousemen alike— played an important part in my research, from answering technical queries to helping unearth records almost forgotten. Equally helpful in their own way were the librarians of the University of Edinburgh Library and the National Library of Scotland. Finally, the people of Edinburgh made a signif icant, albeit indirect, contribution. From them I learned something of what it means to a Scot to be a Scot. In this country I owe my greatest debt to my adviser, Professor Richard D.

  • New York Painting Begins: Eighteenth-Century Portraits at the New-York Historical Society the New-York Historical Society Holds
New York Painting Begins: Eighteenth-Century Portraits at the New-York Historical Society The New-York Historical Society holds one of the nation’s premiere collections of eighteenth-century American portraits. During this formative century a small group of native-born painters and European émigrés created images that represent a broad swath of elite colonial New York society -- landowners and tradesmen, and later Revolutionaries and Loyalists -- while reflecting the area’s Dutch roots and its strong ties with England. In the past these paintings were valued for their insights into the lives of the sitters, and they include distinguished New Yorkers who played leading roles in its history. However, the focus here is placed on the paintings themselves and their own histories as domestic objects, often passed through generations of family members. They are encoded with social signals, conveyed through dress, pose, and background devices. Eighteenth-century viewers would have easily understood their meanings, but they are often unfamiliar to twenty-first century eyes. These works raise many questions, and given the sparse documentation from the period, not all of them can be definitively answered: why were these paintings made, and who were the artists who made them? How did they learn their craft? How were the paintings displayed? How has their appearance changed over time, and why? And how did they make their way to the Historical Society? The state of knowledge about these paintings has evolved over time, and continues to do so as new discoveries are made. This exhibition does not provide final answers, but presents what is currently known, and invites the viewer to share the sense of mystery and discovery that accompanies the study of these fascinating works.

Ruloff De Kype [5] was born in 1510 in Alencon, Bretagne, France. General Notes: Ruloff De Kype was a warm adherent of the Guises, and took a prominent part in the Civil War between the Catholics and the Protestants. On the triumph of the Protestants, which occurred soon after the general massacre of the inhabitants of Vassey in Champagne, in 1562, his Chateau was burned and he fled from his home at Alancon in Bretagne to Holland with his three sons, where they lived for several years under an assumed name. In 1569, with his son Henri, he returned to France, joined the army of the Duke of Anjou, and on the 13th of March 1569 fell in the battle fought on the banks of La Charante, near Jarnac. By the care of his son, Jean Baptiste, who was a priest, he was buried in a small Church near Jarnac. The Church and grave marker were destroyed during the French Revolution. Richard, Jr. entered Harvard College in 1831, but he left in 1834 and went to sea. His experiences became the subject of his book Two Years Before the Mast , published in 1840. Dana re-entered Harvard in 1836, and graduated in 1837. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1840. His book The Seaman's Friend (1841) was a manual of general and legal advice for sailors. In 1841 Dana married Sarah Watson (1814-1907) of Hartford Conn. and they had six children. Dana first entered into practice in 1842 with his brother "Ned," Edward Trowbridge Dana (1818-1869). In 1848, this partnership was dissolved and Dana next entered into partnership with Francis Edward Parker (1821-1886). The majority of Dana's cases involved maritime disputes, and Dana frequently represented seamen who had been mistreated or deprived of their wages. He handled a wide variety of other legal work, however, including cases involving insurance claims, divorces, and occasional criminal trials.

  • LEGISLATIVE FRANKS of NEW JERSEY by Ed and Jean Siskin
Ed & Jean Siskin ~ LEGISLATIVE FRANKS OF NJ LEGISLATIVE FRANKS OF NEW JERSEY By Ed and Jean Siskin The franking privilege is the right to send and or receive mail free from postage. The word frank comes from the Latin via French and Middle English and means free. Samuel Johnson’s famous dictionary of 1755 defines Frank as “A letter which pays no postage” and To Frank as “To exempt letters from postage.” Currently we use the redundant term “free frank” but this is a modern philatelic invention. The term “free frank” does not appear in any British or American legislation or regulation that we’ve been able to find. Insofar as we can determine, “free frank” is a term which started to be used in the 1920’s by stamp dealers. They had begun the illogical use of “franked” to refer to the stamps on a cover and needed a way to refer to franked stampless covers. The term “free frank” was permanently implanted in our lexicon by Edward Stern in his 1936 book History of “Free Franking” of Mail in the United States. Stern was a major stamp dealer of his day and one of the first serious collectors of franked material. We had an original photograph, Figure 1, of Stern showing his Frank Collection to ex-President Hoover at the 1936 New York International Philatelic Exhibition. Wilson Hulme talked us into donating that photograph to the Smithsonian where it now resides. Stern’s book pictures an incredible collection of rare and desirable franked covers. However, some of the discussion in the book is not as fully researched as we would like and must be treated with caution.
