Ruloff De Kype [5] was born in 1510 in Alencon, Bretagne, France. General Notes: Ruloff De Kype was a warm adherent of the Guises, and took a prominent part in the Civil War between the Catholics and the Protestants. On the triumph of the Protestants, which occurred soon after the general massacre of the inhabitants of Vassey in Champagne, in 1562, his Chateau was burned and he fled from his home at Alancon in Bretagne to Holland with his three sons, where they lived for several years under an assumed name. In 1569, with his son Henri, he returned to France, joined the army of the Duke of Anjou, and on the 13th of March 1569 fell in the battle fought on the banks of La Charante, near Jarnac. By the care of his son, Jean Baptiste, who was a priest, he was buried in a small Church near Jarnac. The Church and grave marker were destroyed during the French Revolution. Hendrick Kype [3] (Ruloff 2, Ruloff 1) was born in 1576 in Amsterdam, Netherlands. General Notes: On arriving at manhood he took an active part in the "Company of Foreign Countries", an association formed for the purpose of obtaining access to the Indies. In 1609, they employed Henry Hudson to sail westward in the Half Moon. Sept. 11, 1609 Henry Hudson discovered the mouth of the river that would bear his name. Kype was one of the active means that led to the settlement of New York by the Dutch. He came to New Amsterdam in 1635 with his wife and family. Hendrick Hendricksen Kip [1] (Hendrick 3, Ruloff 2, Ruloff 1) was born in 1600 in Niewenhuys, Groningen, Netherlands, died Sep14 1685 in New York, NY, and was buried on Sep 16, 1685 in New York, NY. General Notes: In 1624 his trade was tailor. He was living in Amsterdam, Holland before 1636. He came to America about 1637 with his wife and five children, as on the map of New Netherlands of 1639 he is recorded as owning one of the Plantations. In 1647 he was chosen as one of the first Board of "Nine Men" to act as Governing Tribunal for New Amsterdam. Apparently he was satirically called "Hendrick Kip of the haughty lip" because he was strong and fearless. He also held office again in 1649 and 1650. He was appointed a Grand Schepen on Feb. 2, 1656, and on April 11, 1657 he was admitted to the Rights of a Great Burgher. Thus he took an important part in the government of New Amsterdam. After New Amsterdam was surrendered, he took the Oath of Allegiance to the English in October 1664. His will (found in the Kip Family papers, NYPL) apparently was never officially recorded. It was drawn by notary Willem Bogardus. Since both will and accounting cite the notary, it seems likely that Bogardus, who was city treasurer 1680-85 and later postmaster of New York province, entrusted the papers to Hendrick's son Jacob, especially since Jacob, who served five terms as city schepen, aided in administering the estate. His 7800 guilder estate was a substantial one for that time period. Will dated Feb. 2, 1671; Codicil dated Aug. 4, 1680; Estate accounting March 8, 1686. SONS: Isaac Kip's descendants settled in Rhinebeck,NY. Jacob Kip's descendants settled in Kip's Bay, NY, and Westchester Co., N.Y.     THE COMMON LAW POWERS OF THE NEW YORK STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL Bennett Liebman* The role of the Attorney General in New York State has become increasingly active, shifting from mostly defensive representation of New York to also encompass affirmative litigation on behalf of the state and its citizens. As newly-active state Attorneys General across the country begin to play a larger role in national politics and policymaking, the scope of the powers of the Attorney General in New York State has never been more important. This Article traces the constitutional and historical development of the At- torney General in New York State, arguing that the office retains a signifi- cant body of common law powers, many of which are underutilized. The Article concludes with a discussion of how these powers might influence the actions of the Attorney General in New York State in the future. Notes for BARVALIS ELIZABETH KLOCK: Also known as Barbara. Birth: Klock/Clock Genealogy Marriage: Old Palatine Church Pamphlet; Page 31, Record gives date of marriage as Feb. 29, 1718. 1718 was not a leap year so I used Feb. 28, 1717/18 as date of marriage. SOK Genealogy: Barvalis Klock married Feb. 29, 1718. Christian Nellis, born 1697, died 1771, who probably was a son of Johan George Nellis, or Johan William, who came with the Palatines in 1710­­14. Christian is buried in the Old Klock cemetery east of St. Johnsville, N.Y. , and it is likely that Barvalis is buried there, also, although the stone next to that of Christian's bears no name of date.

    ARUNDEL CASTLE ARCHIVES Vol IV A CATALOGUE Edited by Francis W Steer Preface Unlike its predecessors, this fourth volume of the catalogue of the archives at Arundel Castle will have to remain in manuscript until either printing costs are reduced or a new and economical process of reproduction is invented. This situation is a matter for regret on two counts as it spoils a series of printed books which have been of assistance to scholars all over the world and it is going to make the definitive edition of the catalogue of this vast collection of archives more difficult for someone to compile in the future. This volume, so far as manuscript permits, follows the style of the other three. It contains (pp1-65) a vast accumulation of records (mainly drafts although some are of special interest and importance) which Messrs Few & Co. (solicitors to the Dukes of Norfolk since 1815) must have transferred to Norfolk House, St James‟s Square, London, over 90 years ago. The documents are in excess of 9,200 and demonstrate, in particular, the litigious character of Bernard Edward, 12th Duke of Norfolk (1765-1842) and the immense amount of work which accrued to his solicitors; they also show the policy with regard to the dispersal and/or consolidation of estates – sometimes to pay off enormous mortgages and at other times to simplify that difficult administration of what was a huge and scattered estate extending into several counties. The catalogue (1965) of the Arundel documents deposited at Sheffield City Library should not be forgotten by students concerned with properties in Yorkshire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

New. $125 The first printing office in New Jersey was opened by James Parker in Woodbridge in 1754. At Parker's death in 1770, Quaker Isaac Collins moved from Philadelphia to Burlington and established the colony's second press. At the conclusion of his military service, Shepard Kollock set up the third press at Chatham in early 1779. With the return to peace in the early 1780s, printing expanded rapidly, and by 1790 New Jerseyans had seen the establishment, and in some cases rapid demise, of almost a dozen printing offices. In the decade of the 1790s, printing spread throughout the state, from Sussex County to Cumberland County, and by the end of the century, forty individuals had either been proprietors or partners in New Jersey printing offices. This bibliography records the books, pamphlets, magazines, newspapers, and broadsides issued from each of these presses. Part One treats all printing known with certainty to have come from an eighteenth-century New Jersey press. Each entry provides the full title, format, collation, pagination, expanded contents, paper and watermarks, type size, binding, references, inventory of copies located, and copy-specific notes describing each located copy.
