University of Queensland School of Languages & Comparative Cultural Studies Master of Arts in Chinese Translation and Interpreting CHIN7180 - Thesis Translation of Short Texts: A case study of street names in Hong Kong Student: Shirmaine Cheung Supervisor: Professor Nanette Gottlieb June 2010 ©2010 The Author Not to be reproduced in any way except for the purposes of research or study as permitted by the Copyright Act 1968 Abstract The topic of this research paper is “Translation of Short Texts: A case study of street names in Hong Kong”. It has been observed that existing translation studies literature appears to cater mainly for long texts. This suggests that there may be a literature gap with regard to short text translation. Investigating how short texts are translated would reveal whether mainstream translation theories and strategies are also applicable to such texts. Therefore, the objectives of the paper are two-fold. Firstly, it seeks to confirm whether there is in fact a gap in the existing literature on short texts by reviewing corpuses of leading works in translation studies. Secondly, it investigates how short texts have been translated by examining the translation theories and strategies used. This is done by way of a case study on street names in Hong Kong. The case study also seeks to remedy the possible paucity of translation literature on short texts by building an objective and representative database to function as an effective platform for examining how street names have been translated. Data, including street names in English and Chinese, are collected by way of systematic sampling from the entire data population.

  • Paper on Installation of Platform Screen Doors and Automatic
立法會 Legislative Council LC Paper No. CB(1)1156/11-12 Ref. : CB1/PS/1/08 Panel on Transport Subcommittee on Matters Relating to Railways Meeting on 2 March 2012 Updated background brief on installation of platform screen doors and automatic platform gates at railway stations Purpose 1. This paper provides background information on the installation of platform screen doors1 (PSDs) and automatic platform gates2 (APGs) at railway stations. It also summarizes the discussions held by the Subcommittee on Matters Relating to Railways (the Subcommittee) on the subject. Background 2. To enhance passenger safety, the then Mass Transit Railway (MTR) Corporation started in mid-1996 to examine the feasibility of retrofitting PSDs at existing MTR stations which were built in the 1970s and 1980s. Following successful completion of the trial installation at Choi Hung Station and taking into consideration of public views, MTR Corporation decided in 1999 to proceed with the PSD Retrofitting Programme at all 74 platforms of 30 underground stations on the Tsuen Wan Line, Kwun Tong Line, and Island Line in phases. The PSD retrofitting programme was completed in the first half of 2006 at a cost of $2 billion. 1 Platform screen doors are full height, total barriers between the station floor and ceiling. 2 Automatic platform gates are chest-height sliding doors at the edge of railway platforms to prevent passengers from falling off the platform edge onto the railway tracks. - 2 - 3. However, there are eight at-grade or aboveground stations in the pre-merger MTR system, namely Tsuen Wan, Kwai Fong, Kwai Hing, Heng Fa Chuen, Chai Wan, Kowloon Bay, Ngau Tau Kok and Kwun Tong Stations, which are provided with natural ventilation only.

  • PRESS STATEMENT 11 November 2019 MTR Strongly Condemns
PRESS STATEMENT 11 November 2019 MTR Strongly Condemns Rioters for Hurling Petrol Bombs into MTR Stations and Trains Rioters repeatedly hurled petrol bombs and set fires at operating stations and trains today (11 November 2019). Objects were also thrown onto track sections and running trains, which severely endangered the safety of passengers and MTR staff. During the course of the day, 32 MTR stations were forced to be closed down and train service on certain sections of several railway lines had to be suspended. The MTR Corporation expresses its strong indignation and condemnation over rioters’ unlawful acts and has reported the cases to the Police. The Corporation reserves the right to take further action against the parties concerned. Rioters began to disrupt the operation of MTR from the early hours of the morning by placing various objects such as bicycles and wooden ladders onto track areas along the open sections of the East Rail Line. Subsequently, MTR staff removed the objects, so that normal service of the first train service could begin. However, at around 6 a.m., the windscreens of two trains in passenger service were damaged by objects falling from height when they were passing through the section near Fanling Station. One of the windscreens was even punctured by a hard object. These incidents have seriously impacted on the safety of train operations. Later on, two other trains were respectively reported to have hit a water-filled barrier near Sheung Shui Station and run over a bicycle which was placed on the track near University Station. It was very fortunate that there were no casualties in an incident of such a serious nature.
