National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth • Foreword In this age of easy communication it is appropriate that the Royal Cambrian Academy should no longer confine its exhibitions to Plas Mawr. This exhibition of works by members is the second to be held at the National Library of Wales and may be an in­ dication of the future pattern of Academy shows. The aim of the Council is to tou~ the Annual Exhibition, showing at three centers in the Principality, North, Mid and South. The splendid gallery at Aberystwyth is an obvious choice in such a scheme. The Council of the Academy wish to acknowledge • with gratitude the great help given by the officers and staff of the National Library in organizing and hanging this exhibition. His research focuses on the art, media and culture of Wales and other small nations. Abstract Between 1969 and 1976, the Welsh Arts Council organized a groundbreaking exhibition series of called Art and Society which explored how particular themes – war, work, worship and sex – had been interpreted across different media. Combining ‘high’ art with ‘popular’ culture, this series attracted international attention for challenging cultural hierarchies with a broader, sociological definition of ‘art’. Yet it was also criticised for rejecting traditional standards and for the subject its final exhibition, Sex. This article examines Art and Society in its broader historical context.
