WING-FOLDING MECHANISM OF THE GRUMMAN WILDCAT An American Society of Mechanical Engineers Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark DESIGNATION CEREMONY AT THE KALAMAZOO AVIATION HISTORY MUSEUM KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN May 15, 2006 A Mechanical Engineering Landmark The innovative wing folding mechanism (STO-Wing), developed by Leroy Grumman in early 1941 and first applied to the XF4F-4 Wildcat, manufactured by the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation, is designated an ASME Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark. (See Plaque text on page 6) Grumman People Three friends were the principal founders of the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation (Now known as Northrop Grumman Corporation), in January 1930, in a garage in Baldwin, Long Island, New York. (See photo of Leon Swirbul, William Schwendler, and Leroy Grumman on page 7) Leroy Randle (Roy) Grumman (1895-1982) earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Cornell University in 1916. He then joined the U. S. Navy and earned his pilot’s license in 1918. He was later the Managing Director of Loening Engineering Corporation, but when Loening merged with Keystone Aircraft Corporation, he and two of his friends left Loening and started their own firm — Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation. William T. Schwendler (1904-1978) earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from New York University in 1924. He was reluctant to leave Long Island, so he chose to join Grumman and Swirbul in forming the new company. Leon A. (Jake) Swirbul (1898-1960) studied two years at Cornell University but then left to join the U.S. Marine Corps. Instrumental in the founding and early growth of Grumman, he soon became its president. -

ABSTRACT Title of Thesis: BIGGER, BETTER, FASTER, MORE: JET FIGHTER DEVELOPMENT AND GRAND STRATEGY IN THE UNITED STATES AIR FORCE, 1947-1953 Jeremy Ryan Linden , Master of Arts, 2003 Thesis Directed By: Professor Dr. Jon Tetsuro Sumida Department of History United States Air Force jet fighter development and strategy in the post -World War II period is illustrative of the beginning stages of the strategy of annihilation that the United States has adopted in the late -20th and 21st centu ries. Development and procurement of fighters is a complex process that must take into account the potential mission and purpose of the aircraft in overall strategy, the impact of that technology upon existing forces and missions, and the continuum of costs versus performance. The Air Force chose a developmental path for jet fighters which concentrated on the ass urance that qualitatively superior aircraft could outperform greater numbers of technologically comparable enemy aircraft. The first section of this thesis provides documentary and secondary evidence concerning the transformation of air warfare due to jet technology . Section two argues the strategic significance of jet fighter development as a precursor of a strategy of annihilation. First Wright brothers’ airplane patent, based on their 1902 glider, is filed in America. Aug. 8, 1903. The Langley gasoline engine model airplane is successfully launched from a catapult on a houseboat. Dec. 8, 1903. Second and last trial of the Langley airplane, piloted by Charles M. Manly, is wrecked in launching from a houseboat on the Potomac River in Washington, D.C. Dec. 17, 1903. At Kill Devil Hill near Kitty Hawk, N.C., Orville Wright flies for about 12 seconds over a distance of 120 feet, achieving the world’s first manned, powered, sustained, and controlled flight in a heavier-than-air machine. The Wright brothers made four flights that day. On the last, Wilbur Wright flew for 59 seconds over a distance of 852 feet. (Three days earlier, Wilbur Wright had attempted the first powered flight, managing to cover 105 feet in 3.5 seconds, but he could not sustain or control the flight and crashed.)
