Basti n; T. Takano Introduction World Championship HISTORICAL EVENT AT MACAO For the fi rst ti me in its history started in 1964, the CIK-FIA Karti ng World Championship will be held in Asia. Its 46th editi on will be run on 8-11 October 2009 at Macao on the local 1,203 metres long permanent Karti ng circuit located on the Coloane Island. Macao, which became a “Special administrati ve region of the Popular Republic of China” in 1999, is celebrati ng this year the 10th anniversary of its new politi cal statute. Situated on the southern coast of China and almost in front of Hong Kong, Macao can boast a rich and long motor sport culture, parti cularly through its traditi onal Formula 3 GP or, more recently, its rounds counti ng towards the World Touring Car Championship. The “Karti ng” acti vity taking place in Macao has gone crescendo as years went by with the organisati on in 2005 and 2006 of the internati onal Karti ng GP, followed in 2007 and 2008 by CIK-FIA Asia-Pacifi c Championships for the KF1 and KF3 categories. The granti ng of the - 3 - Introduction World Championship World Championship statute is therefore the outcome of a constant progression for an event which we owe to the ASN (Nati onal Sporti ng Authority), the Automobile General Associati on Macao-China, which has the additi onal support of the highest local authoriti es, the Macau Government Tourist Offi ce and the Macau Sport Development Board. Forty-three Drivers will fi ght it out for the 2009 World Championship, which will be fi lmed by the cameras of Eurosport Internati onal (there will be live TV broadcast of the fi nal). 2008 World, European and Asia-Pacifi c Champion, the Italian Marco Ardigo (Tony Kart-Vortex) is generally looked on as the favourite. But there will be fi erce competi ti on with, as oft en in Karti ng, Drivers who can be classifi ed in two categories: very experienced or “professional” Drivers, in parti cular Davide Fore (I- CRG- Maxter), Gary Catt (GB- Tony Kart-Vortex), Jonathan Thonon (B- CRG-Maxter), Arnaud Kozlinski (F- CRG- Maxter), Manuel Renaudie (F- Gillard-Parilla), Ben Hanley (GB- Maranello-Maxter) and Jason Parrott (GB- Birel- - 4 - Introduction World Championship Parilla) on the one hand, and, on the other, youngsters of the up-and-coming generati on led by Aaro Vainio (FIN- Maranello-Maxter), Toman Libor (CZ- Birel-Parilla), Brandon Maisano (F- LH-Maxter), Robert Foster-Jones (GB- FA Kart-Vortex), Yannick de Brabander (B- Intrepid- TM), Miikka Kunranta (FIN- Birel-Parilla), Zdenek Groman (CZ- Maranello-Parilla) and Oliver Rowland (GB- LH-Maxter). In total, 14 nati ons will be represented, including 7 Asian countries. And two ladies (Tereza Gomanova/CZ and Laura Tillett /GB) will be at the start. 42 out of the 43 Competi tors will race on Bridgestone tyres while Dunlop’s interests will be defended only by Luca Giacomello (I- Zanardi-Parilla). As a historical fi rst, two Chinese Drivers (David Zhu and Hongwei Cao) and a Driver from Macao (Joao Afonso) will take part in the Karti ng World Championship. The programme of the meeti ng will be completed by competi ti ons counti ng towards the FIA Asian Zone Open Karti ng Championship and by the CIK-FIA Asia-Pacifi c KF3 Championship, in which another premiere will be worth - 5 - Introduction World Championship noti ng, namely the very fi rst appearance of Yokohama tyres in the CIK-FIA Championships. Entry lists, ti me schedules and extra informati on are available on the CIK-FIA website (www.cikfi a.com), where all the results of the event will also be published in real ti me 2007 & 2008 CIK-FIA World Karti ng Champion, Marco Ardigo (I) - 6 - Entry List World Championship 1.
