Turkiye Parazitol Derg 2019;43(1):30-5. ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of the present study was to determine tick species found on humans who suffered from tick bite in the Southwestern Anatolia Region, Turkey. Methods: Between January and October 2007, ticks were collected from people admitted to the city and/or town hospitals with complaints of tick bites in nine different provinces of Turkey. Genus and/or species of the ticks in adult, larva and nymph stages were identified microscopically. Identification was done using related taxonomic keys. Results: A total of 2.610 ticks were collected from humans who were admitted to the hospitals with complaints of tick bites in the Southwestern Anatolia Region in the present study. Of these, 1.858 samples were collected from the Aegean Region and the remaining 752 from the Mediterranean Region of the country. The ticks were identified as Hyalomma spp. (78.58%), Rhipicehalus spp. (18.89%), Ixodes spp. (0.88%), Dermacentor spp. (0.77%), Haemaphysalis spp. (0.61%), Argas spp. (0.23%), and Ornithodoros spp. (0.04%). Results indicated that the majority of the ticks were nymphs of Hyalomma spp. (n=1.582). Nymphal stage was most commonly encountered from the Aegean Region and the Mediterranean Region with a prevalence of 46.13% (n=1.204) and 14.48% (n=378) respectively. Within the collected adult ticks (n=913), the majority of the samples were identified as H. marginatum (n=233, 26.09%). Conclusion: The results indicate the high diversity of tick species infesting humans in the Southwestern Anatolia Region, Turkey. So, it is crucial to publish information on tick bite prevention, which would play an important role in reducing the incidence of tick-borne diseases. Keywords: Human, Southwestern region, tick bites, Turkey ÖZ Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı; Türkiye’nin Güneybatı Anadolu Bölgesi’nde, kene ısırmasından muzdarip insanlar üzerinde saptanan kene türlerini belirlemektir. Bunların 1,858’i Ege Bölgesi’nden, kalan 752 örnek Akdeniz Bölgesi’nden elde edilmiştir. Keneler, Hyalomma spp. (%78,58), Rhipicehalus spp. (%18,89), Ixodes spp. (%0,88), Dermacentor spp. (%0,77), Haemaphysalis spp. (%0,61), Der Argas spp. (%0,23), ve Ornithodoros spp. (%0,04) olarak identifiye edilmiştir. Sonuçlar, kenelerin büyük çoğunluğunun Hyalomma spp. (n=1,582) nimflerine ait olduğunu göstermiştir. Nimf aşaması çoğunlukla Ege Bölgesi’nde ve %46,13 (n=1,204) oranında bulunurken, Akdeniz Bölgesi’nde %14,48 (n=378) oranında bulunmuştur. Toplanan erişkin keneler içinde (n=913), örneklerin büyük çoğunluğu H. marginatum (n=233, %26,09) olarak identifiye edilmiştir. Sonuç: Sonuçlar, Güneybatı Anadolu Bölgesi’nde insanlarda enfestasyon oluşturabilecek kene türlerinin yüksek çeşitliliğini göstermektedir. Bu nedenle, kene kaynaklı hastalıkların insidansını azaltmada önemli bir rol oynayacak olan kene tutunmasının önlenmesine yönelik bilgiler yayınlamak önem arz etmektedir. TICKS IN RELATION TO HUMAN DISEASES CAUSED BY RICKETTSIA SPECIES1,2 By HARRY HOOGSTRAAL Department oj Medical Zoology, United States Naval Medical Research Unit Number Three, Cairo, Egypt, U.A.R. Rickettsiae (185) are obligate intracellular parasites that multiply by binary fission in the cells of both vertebrate and invertebrate hosts. They are pleomorphic coccobacillary bodies with complex cell walls containing muramic acid, and internal structures composed of ribonucleic and deoxyri bonucleic acids. Rickettsiae show independent metabolic activity with amino acids and intermediate carbohydrates as substrates, and are very susceptible to tetracyclines as well as to other antibiotics. They may be considered as fastidious bacteria whose major unique character is their obligate intracellu lar life, although there is at least one exception to this. In appearance, they range from coccoid forms 0.3 J.I. in diameter to long chains of bacillary forms. They are thus intermediate in size between most bacteria and filterable viruses, and form the family Rickettsiaceae Pinkerton. They stain poorly by Gram's method but well by the procedures of Macchiavello, Gimenez, and Giemsa.

ARTICLE ISSN 2651 - 5210 MODULAR 2019;2(2):21-45 The Cultural Sustainability: Merzifon Anatolia College, Turkey Gizem Özerol1, Aysu Akalın2 Received: 19 November 2019 - Accepted: 17 December 2019 Abstract The article proposes an analysis of the role of American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) during the late Ottoman and the early nationalist (Republican) Turkey and focusses especially on the ABCFM organization and the role of Protestant missionaries, which they succeeded in establishing autonomous schools, hospitals, clinics, orphanages, lodgings and ateliers not only in the capitals, but also in provinces. The American Board began evangelism among Armenians, and the education and the social services became part of the Protestant movement in the Near East. Following efforts to Christianize the nations through evangelism, in the mid of 19th century, Merzifon (Marsovan) province was chosen due to its location in the middle of Anatolia and Merzifon Anatolia College was designed as an important ‘station’ in order to support the American missionary movements. Then, between the years 1886 and 1938, ABCFM built strong connections with Anatolia College in Merzifon to gain a very important strategic position. In the context of the First World War, the function of the Anatolia College buildings has changed for different aims; the military used these buildings as the Artillery Regiment. After the war the ABCFM’s network broke down but its strong contribution to present education in Turkey is inevitable. The site as a heritage is still an active part of the city’s cultural life with some existing buildings of ABCFM supporting culture and education.

For the western lower Bakırçay plain in the ancient Pergamon Micro-Region, geoarchaeological studies have shown changes in geomorphodynamics primarily on a site-basis. We reconstruct past geomorphodynamics in the area based on a meta-analysis of 108 14C-ages obtained from 25 sediment sequences mainly from colluvial and alluvial deposits by analyzing cumulative probability functions of the 14C-ages. Accounting for biases in the database, we applied different approaches and compared the empirical probability functions with simulated functions. Reconstructed geomorphodynamics in the western lower Bakırçay plain during the Holocene principally coincide with a trend of climate-driven sensitivity to erosion and population dynamics in the eastern Mediterranean, but are also related to the local settlement history. Our data analysis shows that transformations of the Pergamon Micro-Region between the Hellenistic and Roman Imperial times is contemporary to increasing geomorphodynamics that peak in Roman Imperial times.

From the landing of the first two American Protestant missionaries, Levi Parsons and Pliny Fisk, on the Ottoman Empire, as a matter of fact on the Near East, in early 1820, until the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, American missionaries occupied the increasing attention of the Ottoman bureaucracy in domestic and foreign affairs while the mission work in the Ottoman Empire established the largest investment of the American Board of Commissionaries for Foreign Missions (A.B.C.F.M.) in the world, even above China and India, on the eve of the war. The bulk of the correspondence of the Ottoman Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the period was with the United States and this was chiefly concerned about the American mission schools. Therefore, this paper seeks to examine the encounter between the Ottoman officialdom and the American Protestant missionaries in Ottoman Turkey during the successive regimes of Sultan Abdülhamid II and the Committee of Union and Progress, the Unionists in the period of 1876-1914.

Productive efficiency scores were calculated by using Stochastic Frontier Analysis. Tobit model was used to determine the inefficiency determinants. Farm-level research data were obtained from 67 randomly selected dairy farms. Study results revealed that the average amount of milk produced on dairy farms in Merzifon district could be increased in the ratio of 22% with the current technology. The technical efficiency of the sample dairy farms ranged from 0.56 to 0.99 (mean 0.78). Variables such as education level of farm operators, feeding frequency, the ratio of Holstein stock and land allocated to fodder crops affected technical inefficiency negatively. For this purpose, this study proposes new strategies such as providing better agricultural extension services and farmer training programs to increase the educational level of farmers, and providing farmers with the opportunity of accessing loan to enhance their technical efficiency. Keywords: Dairy farming; stochastic production frontier; technical efficiency; determinants of inefficiency 1.

The changes which have occured in the profile and tendency of the customers, force the tourism sector inevi- tably to improve the products according to the demand’s needs. In order to meet the needs and expectations of the customers and changed features of the demands, it is necessary to improve new tourism types in the different fields. Interesting tourism products and services are showed as the alternative of the mass tourism and reflect the whole tendencies which have improved to satisfy different and special interest beyond the interest which have improved around sea, sun and sand. • Lifestyle Migration to Turkey
LIFESTYLE MIGRATION TO TURKEY: EU CITIZENS LIVING ON THE TURKISH SUNBELT1 İlkay Südaş, PhD [email protected] EGE UNIVERSITY, FACULTY OF LETTERS, DEPARTMENT OF GEOGRAPHY, TURKEY Lifestyle migration terms the migration movement of relatively affluent individuals moving voluntarily to the places where they believe they can lead a better life. This is a form of migration that emerges related to rapid globalization and there is a strong nexus between lifestyle migration and tourism. Repeating previous tourist visits to the destinations are the main connection with the migration areas and purchasing second homes is a “stepping stone” (Casado-Diaz 2012) towards permanent or seasonal retirement migration. Friends and relatives already living in the destination are also influential in migration decision. O’Reilly and Benson (2009, 2) point out that the previous research has attempted to link the mobilities to wider phenomena using umbrella concepts such as retirement migration, leisure migration, international counter-urbanization, second home ownership, amenity seeking or seasonal migration. Combining these different conceptualizations, O’Reilly and Benson (2009) suggest the term “lifestyle migration” which is described as the migration movement of “relatively affluent individuals, moving, en masse, either part or full time, permanently or temporarily, to countries where the cost of living and/or the price of property is cheaper; places which, for various reasons, signify a better quality or pace of life. Lifestyle migrants are individuals with high mobility, permanently or seasonally relocating to the areas in pursuit of a better way of life. The seasonal or permanent migration of elderly northern Europeans towards the coastal areas of Southern European countries like Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and Greece has become an important phenomenon.
