Witte Language: English Date: December 1, 2015 Portraits as Objects within Seventeenth-Century Dutch Vanitas Still Life Abstract This paper is mainly concerned with the seventeenth-century Dutch vanitas still life with special attention given to its later years in 1650 – 1700. In the early period, there was significant innovation: It shaped the characteristic Dutch art of the Golden Age. The research focuses on the sub-genre of the vanitas still life, particularly the type which includes as part of its composition a human face, a physiognomic likeness by way of a print, painted portrait, painted tronie, or a sculpture. This thesis attempts to utilize this artistic tradition as a vehicle to delve into the aspects of realism and iconography in Dutch seventeenth-century art. To provide context the introduction deals with the Dutch Republic and the conditions that made this art feasible. A brief historiography of still life and vanitas still life follows. The research then delves into the still life paintings with a portrait, print or sculpture, with examples from twelve artists, and attempts to understand the relationships that exist between the objects rendered. The trends within this subject matter revolve around a master artist, other times around a city such as Haarlem, Leiden or country, England. The research looks closely at specific paintings of different artists, with a thematic focus of artist portraits, historical figures, painted tronies, and sculpture within the vanitas still life sub-genre.

The book represents a definitive moment of cohesion between the two most conspicuous cultural developments of the early Renaissance, namely, humanism and the visual arts. This dissertation reconstructs the intellectual and visual environments in which Alberti moved before he entered Florence in the curia of Pope Eugenius IV in 1434, one year before the recorded date of completion of De pictura. For the two decades prior to his arrival in Florence, from 1414 to 1434, Alberti resided in Padua, Bologna, and Rome. Examination of specific textual and visual material in those cities – sources germane to Alberti’s humanist and visual development, and thus to the ideas put forth in De pictura – has been insubstantial. This dissertation will therefore present an investigation into the sources available to Alberti in Padua, Bologna and Rome, and will argue that this material helped to shape the prescriptions in Alberti’s canonical Renaissance tract. By more fully accounting for his intellectual and artistic progression before his arrival in Florence, this forensic reconstruction aims to fill a gap in our knowledge of Alberti’s formative years and thereby underline impact of his early career upon his development as an art theorist.

    Mala espina: de la estatuaria antigua a la escultura medieval y otros afeites The spinarius: from Classical Antiquity to Medieval Sculpture and other Cosmetic Questions José Luis HERNANDO GARRIDO UNED-Centro Asociado de Zamora RESUMEN La atractiva imagen del espinario (spinario, cavaspina, fedale, tireur d’épine, Boy with Thorn, Dor- nauszieher), muy habitual en la escultura helenística (con brillantes ejemplos en la Galería de los Uffizi, el British, el Louvre o los Museos Capitolinos) y un significado carente de negatividad, se transformó durante la Edad Media, adquiriendo un sentido diferente; pues el personaje, con la excusa de quitarse la espina de la planta del pie, muestra desvergonzadamente su sexo, transformándose en imagen tri- butaria de la lujuria. Con la llegada del humanismo y el romanticismo su simbolismo fue cambiando: un adúltero, un cateto, un buscavidas o una pieza sublime encarnando una arcádica belleza perdida destinada a la instrucción artística. ABSTRACT The attractive sculpture of Boy with Thorn (spinario, cavaspina, fedale, tireur d’épine, Dornauszieher), very common in the Hellenistic period (with shining examples in the Uffizi Gallery, the British, the Louvre and the Capitoline Museums) and a meaning devoid of negativity, was transformed during the Middle Ages, acquiring a different meaning; for the character, with the excuse to take off the spine of the plant foot, shamelessly showing her sex, becoming indebted image of lust. With the advent of Humanism and Romanticism was changing its symbolism: an adulterer, an illiterate peasant, a hustler or sublime piece embodying an Arcadian lost beauty devoted to arts instruction.

The book represents a definitive moment of cohesion between the two most conspicuous cultural developments of the early Renaissance, namely, humanism and the visual arts. This dissertation reconstructs the intellectual and visual environments in which Alberti moved before he entered Florence in the curia of Pope Eugenius IV in 1434, one year before the recorded date of completion of De pictura. For the two decades prior to his arrival in Florence, from 1414 to 1434, Alberti resided in Padua, Bologna, and Rome. Examination of specific textual and visual material in those cities – sources germane to Alberti’s humanist and visual development, and thus to the ideas put forth in De pictura – has been insubstantial.

The double rectangular base is in black marble, the sculpture depicting a seated young man while, with his legs crossed, leans over to remove a thorn from the sole of his left foot. There are several versions scattered in museums around the world. The perhaps older one, in bronze (73 cm high), is located in the Capitoline Museums in Rome, while a marble is part of the Uffizi collection in Florence and was copied by Brunelleschi in the famous competition panel for the north door of the Baptistery of the 1401. Another marble copy is found in the Louvre, a bronze one in the Pushkin Museum in Moscow. History: The statue in Rome has been documented since the 12th century. It was noticed in the late twelfth or early thirteenth century by an English traveler, Magister Gregorius, who wrote in his De mirabilibus urbis Romae that it was ridiculous to think it was Priapus. In fact, it must be considered that until then the boy's leaning scrotum had been mistakenly seen as an extremely large penis, typical of Priapus's iconography. It was donated by Sixtus IV to the city in 1471, taking it from the Lateran palace.
