Miller ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The same year I began my Ph.D. work at the University of Michigan, my father lost the coal-mining job he had worked for over twenty years. That particular confluence of events had a profound effect on me, and I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge the ways in which my personal feelings of anger and frustration—my sense of being somehow out-of-place—influenced my thinking and this project. Certainly, it was one of the catalysts for my deep interest in the U.S. literary Left. Like so many others, I am indebted to Alan Wald for my understanding of Left literature and culture. Alan has been, probably more than he knows, an example of the kind of scholar I hope to be—even, I admit, an ideal ego of sorts. I continue to be as awed by his deep knowledge as I am by his humility and generosity. Yopie Prins taught me how to read poetry when I already thought I knew how, and my conversations with her over the past five years have shaped my thinking in remarkable ways. From my first days in Ann Arbor, June Howard has been a source of intellectual guidance, and her insights on my work and the profession have been a sustaining influence. -

Warhol & Mapplethorpe GUISE & DOLLS The portraits created by New York artists Andy Warhol (1928–1987) and Robert Mapplethorpe (1946–1989) challenge our notions of gender and sexuality. The title Guise & Dolls refers to the ways in which identity— including gender— is a performance. Both Warhol and Mapplethorpe were masters of this performance, and these portraits were their stage. This exhibition, the first to consider the two artists together, examines specific groups of portraits made in the 1970s and 1980s. This is the period that began with the Stonewall Riots and the launch of the gay rights movement, and ended with the AIDS crisis. Both Warhol and Mapplethorpe took part in the sexual freedom and gender fluidity of the new social climate. And both were affected by the first wave of the AIDS epidemic, as the sense of personal and creative freedom changed to one of mounting anxiety. In this exhibition you will see images of cross-dressing, gender ambiguity, disguise, alter-egos, drag queens, and sadomasochistic personas. Portraits of Warhol and Mapplethorpe are presented alongside other paintings, photographs, prints, films, and ephemera. Together, these works demonstrate the artists’ engagement with gender, identity, sexuality, beauty, and performance. I know I am not just a fashion photogra - pher. And Patti Smith is certainly not just a rock icon. She is much more. For me, this movie is about discovering who Patti Smith is. This process of discovery has taken place over the course of 11 in - credible years of filming. I can’t believe it, but a quarter of my life has been spent framing her in my lens. And through this film, I want to channel that experience to the audience. It all happened so organically. I was just interested in her and in get - ting to know her as a person. As our friendship blossomed over a decade, and as I got to know her, my lens was getting to know her as well. Patti is a constant reminder to me that there’s an urgency in the world. everyone sits back in his or her comfort zone. No one goes to record stores and researches new artists anymore. So few people are out there knocking down the walls. Nowadays, everything is presented to us in an easily digestible format, accessible with the click of a button. The world we live in almost doesn’t seem real. I grew up with the top hits mTV fed me. -

This thesis aims to determine whether Smith’s androgyny might be conceptualized as a subversive tactic to either the masculinist ethos of rock ‘n’ roll, or the limitations of prescribed femininity in general society. To draw a conclusion, it analyzes primary sources of the written, musical, and video variety from the first three years of Smith’s career as a rock ‘n’ roll performer. This thesis traces the influences in her musical and performance characteristics to determine to what extent they inform her performance of androgyny. -

Patti Smith, Poland and poetic prose Patti Smith’s poetic prose Woolgathering (1992) was published in Poland in 2014, more than twenty years after its publication in the United States. The author of the essay, following the reception of this book among Polish readers, wants to shed light on the presence of Patti Smith as a writer, not just a singer, in Polish culture. She shows the important components, building the literary works of the American artist that have never been sufficiently recognized by Polish audience. Keywords: Patti Smith, American literature, reception of literature, rock music, performance Słowa kluczowe: Patti Smith, literatura amerykańska, recepcja literatury, muzyka rockowa, performens Polish discussion with Patti Smith Patti Smith, an American writer and visual artist, better known as singer and songwriter, regarded as a central figure in “the world of rock and roll” from 1975 to the present day has released eleven albums, but nowadays her music is not particularly well known in Poland, rarely may we hear her songs on the radio. This is, of course, a big simplification. In connection with the two concerts of the artist which took place in Poland within a short time (Warsaw – 2014, Katowice – 2015) and the publication of her two literary works (Just Kids – 2012, Woolgathering – 2014) in our country (Smith, 2012a; Smith, 2014) for example Radio Three promoted her figure and achievements (Trójka 2012; Trójka 2014; Trójka 2015). The interest of the listeners resulted in that Patti Smith’s music is a surprisingly frequent guest on Radio Three now. -

Introduction Patti Smith’s late work is invariably connected by critics and fans to the work of her ‘classic’ era (the 1970s punk scene) and the extent to which recent work lives up to, develops or exceeds that on which the artist’s reputation was based. Smith herself has been no stranger to such memory work, via her involvement in biographical projects such as her book Just Kids and the film Dream of Life. Her musical output since the 1990s has been characterized by memory work, not least in a number of pieces written in response to the passing of friends and family. Much of the 1996 album Gone Again was written as a response to the loss of Smith’s husband Fred ‘Sonic ‘Smith, as well as her brother Todd and her long-term friends and collaborators Robert Mapplethorpe and Richard Sohl; the album also contained the song ‘About a Boy’, an homage to Kurt Cobain. ‘Grateful’, which appeared on Gung Ho (2000) was a song that recalled the late Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead, while ‘Mother Rose’ (from Trampin’, 2004) remembered Smith’s recently deceased mother. Such work has, however, been complemented by an embrace of new beginnings and adventure, often achieved by returning to places, themes and styles Smith has explored before but looking for fresh angles and new perspectives. -
