BUTTERFLIES FROM THE MIDDLE EOCENE: THE EARLIEST OCCURRENCE OF FOSSIL PAPILIONOIDEA (LEPIDOPTERA) 1 Christopher J. Durden 2 and Hugh Rose 3 ABSTRACT Three fossil butterflies recently collected from the Green River Shale of Colorado extend the known range of Rhopalocera eight to ten million years back, to 48 Ma. Praepapilio Colorado n. g., n. sp., and P. gracilis n. sp. are primitive Papilionidae related to the modern Baronia brevicornis Salvin, but they require a new subfamily, Praepapilioninae. Riodinella nympha n. g., n. sp. is a primitive member of the Lycaenidae, related to modern Ancyluris, Riodina, and Rhetus, in the tribe Riodinidi. INTRODUCTION With approximately 194,000 living species, the Lepidoptera is, after the Coleoptera with some 350,000, species, the second most diverse order of organisms. It is underrepresented in the fossil record (Scudder 1875, 1891, 1892; Handlirsch 1925;Mackay 1970;Kuhne 1973; Shields 1976). -

Several varieties have been described in the past, but they are no longer recognized in most taxonomic manuals. Aristolochia serpentaria occurs in 26 eastern states and is common in the southern and central part of its range, while becoming rare along its northern periphery. It is listed as a Division 2 species in Flora Conservanda (Brumback and Mehrhoff et al. 1996). Connecticut is the only New England state in which it is found, where it occurs at 12 known sites in ten towns. It grows in a variety of upland forest communities, but is more likely to be found in dry, somewhat rich, rocky, deciduous or mixed deciduous-coniferous woods in Connecticut. Farther south, it also has broad environmental requirements, occupying many upland soil and forest types. Population trends for the species in Connecticut are unclear. One new population was discovered in 2001. Monitoring in 2001 of eight extant sites found that two populations had decreased, three had increased, and one had stayed the same. Several known populations are threatened by habitat modification, invasive species, or site fragility. Two extant populations have not been surveyed for several years. -

Parsons Entomology Section, Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County 900 Exposition Blvd., LosAngeles, California 90007, U.S.A.*' (Received December 13, 1995) Abstract In order to reappraise the interrelationships of genera in the tribe Troidini, and to test the resultant theory of troidine evolution against biogeographical data a cladistic analysis of troidine genera was performed. Data were obtained mainly from immature stages, providing characters that appeared to be more reliable than many "traditional" adult characters. A single cladogram hypothesising phylogenetic relation ships of the troidine genera was generated. This differs markedly from cladograms obtained in previous studies that used only adult characters. However, the cladogram appears to fit well biogeographical data for the Troidini in terms of vicariance biogcography, especially as this relates to the general hypotheses of Gondwanaland fragmentation and continental drift events advanced by recent geological studies. The genus Ornithoptera is shown to be distinct from Troides. Based on input data drawn equally from immature stages and adult characters, a single cladogram hypothesising the likely phylogeny of Ornithoptera species was generated. Urbanization can severely impact butterfy communities, yet there have been no reports of the species richness and distribution of butterfies in urban parks in Beijing. Here, we conducted the frst butterfy survey in ten urban parks in Beijing and estimated butterfy species richness. Subsequently, we examined the distribution pattern of butterfy species and analyzed correlations between butterfy species richness with park variables (age, area and distance to city center), and richness of other bioindicator groups (birds and plants). We collected 587 individual butterfies belonging to 31 species from fve families; 74% of the species were considered cosmopolitan. The highest butterfy species richness and abundance was recorded at parks located at the edge of city and species richness was signifcantly positively correlated with distance from city center (p < 0.05). No signifcant correlations were detected between the species richness and park age, park area and other bioindicator groups (p > 0.05). Our study provides the frst data of butterfy species in urban Beijing, and serves as a baseline for further surveys and conservation eforts. China is a megadiverse country but is rapidly losing biodiversity as a consequence of socioeconomic development and expansion of urban land since the 1990s1,2. -

Summary The current hypothesis about the phylogenetic relationships within the family Papilionidae is critically re-examined on the basis of available information about the exact distribution of individual characters. The position of the genus Hypermnestra within the subfamily Parnassiinae cannot be supported by any synapomorphy. The Parnassiinae are not recognizable as a monophyletic group even without the genus Hypermnestra, as all apomorphic character states also occur in the tribe Troidini of the Papilioninae. The monophyly of the Papilioninae still appears well supported, but two supposedly auta- pomorphic characters for this subfamily show incongruent distributions. The cubital crossvein in the forewing does not present an autapomorphy of the Papilioninae. An alternative and better supported cladogram for the Papi- lionidae cannot be presented until additional characters have been more care- fully examined. Zusammenfassung Die aktuell als gültig angesehene Hypothese der phylogenetischen Verwandt- schaftverhältnisse innerhalb der Papilionidae wird anhand der genauen Ver- teilung bekannter Merkmale kritisch überprüft. Für eine Zugehörigkeit der Gattung Hypermnestra zur Unterfamilie Parnassiinae finden sich keine synapo- morphen Merkmale. Die Parnassiinae lassen sich auch ohne die Gattung Hypermnestra nicht als Monophylum begründen, da alle als apomorph an- gesehenen Merkmalszustände auch innerhalb des Tribus Troidini der Papi- lioninae auftreten. Die Monophylie der Papilioninae scheint gegenwärtig besser begründbar, jedoch ist das Auftreten von zwei bisher als Autapomorphien angesehenen Merkmalen widersprüchlich. -

In this study, we investigated the genetic structure and demographic history of P. glacialis by analyzing partial sequences of four mitochondrial genes and nuclear single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) via genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) of samples from nearly the entire known distributional range in China. The mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) data demonstrated that a total of 39 haplotypes were present, and the species was estimated to have diverged about 0.95 million years ago during the middle Pleistocene transition into two main clades that likely formed during the Kunlun-Huanghe tectonic movement. -

Nanjing Institute of Paeleontology and Stratigraphy, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanjing 210008, China Abstract: In the present study, we report the first complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of the Painted Jezebel, Delias hyparete. The mitogenome of Delias hyparete is 15 186 bp in length, and has typical sets of 37 genes: 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 2 ribosomal RNAs, 22 transfer RNAs and a non-coding A+T-rich region. All protein-coding genes are initiated by ATN codons, except for COI, which is tentatively designated by the CGA codon, as observed in other butterfly species. A total of 10 PCGs harbored the complete termination codon TAA or TAG, while the COI, COII and ND5 genes ended at a single T residue. All 22 tRNA genes show typical clover structures, with the exception of the tRNASer(AGN) which lacks the dihydrouridine (DHU) stem and is instead replaced by a simple loop. Thirteen intergenic spacers totaling 153 bp, and 13 overlapping regions totaling 46 bp are scattered throughout the whole genome. The 377 bp long of D. hyparete A+T-rich region is not comprised of large repetitive sequences, but harbors several features characteristic of the lepidopteran insects, including the motif ATAGA followed by an 18 bp poly-T stretch, a microsatellite-like (AT)5 element preceded by the ATTTA motif, an 10 bp polyA-like stretch (AAAAATAAAA) present immediately upstream tRNAMet. -
