'Nothing but the Truth': Genre, Gender and Knowledge in the US
‘Nothing but the Truth’: Genre, Gender and Knowledge in the US Television Crime Drama 2005-2010 Hannah Ellison Submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) University of East Anglia School of Film, Television and Media Studies Submitted January 2014 ©This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that no quotation from the thesis, nor any information derived therefrom, may be published without the author's prior, written consent. 2 | Page Hannah Ellison Abstract Over the five year period 2005-2010 the crime drama became one of the most produced genres on American prime-time television and also one of the most routinely ignored academically. This particular cyclical genre influx was notable for the resurgence and reformulating of the amateur sleuth; this time remerging as the gifted police consultant, a figure capable of insights that the police could not manage. I term these new shows ‘consultant procedurals’. Consequently, the genre moved away from dealing with the ills of society and instead focused on the mystery of crime. Refocusing the genre gave rise to new issues. Questions are raised about how knowledge is gained and who has the right to it. With the individual consultant spearheading criminal investigation, without official standing, the genre is re-inflected with issues around legitimacy and power. The genre also reengages with age-old questions about the role gender plays in the performance of investigation. With the aim of answering these questions one of the jobs of this thesis is to find a way of analysing genre that accounts for both its larger cyclical, shifting nature and its simultaneously rigid construction of particular conventions. -

For my thesis, I explored the shipper paradigm and the differences between network sitcoms and crime procedurals by creating one spec script The Big Bang Theory and another for Bones. -

New Broadcast TV Series: the Good, the Bad, and the Too Bad by Steve Sternberg
March 2021 #103 __________________________________________________________________________________________ _____ New Broadcast TV Series: The Good, the Bad, and the Too Bad By Steve Sternberg Because of the pandemic, this is the first time in 30 years I haven’t seen any fall pilots and have only seen a few mid-season shows prior to their premieres. So I’m reviewing these new series after watching at least the first few episodes during their regular broadcast runs. Also due to the pandemic, many returning scripted shows didn’t premiere until January or later. These include, ABC’s The Rookie, Black-ish, Mixed-ish, NBC’s Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist, Chicago Fire, Chicago Med, Chicago P.D., Law & Order: SVU, New Amsterdam, Good Girls, FOX’s Prodigal Son, The Resident, 9-1-1, 9-1-1: Lone Star, CW’s Batwoman, All American, Riverdale, Nancy Drew, Legacies, Charmed, Black Lightning, The Flash. Still to come this spring include, NBC’s Manifest, FOX’s The Moodys, and CW’s Legends of Tomorrow, In the Dark, and Dynasty. Here’s a look at the new broadcast series premiering so far this season: A Sternberg Report Sponsored Message The Sternberg Report ©2021 __________________________________________________________________________________________ _____ Big Sky (ABC): David E. Kelley crime drama centering around a seemingly harmless long-haul trucker (the always good Brian Geraghty) and state trooper (John Carroll Lynch) in Montana, an unlikely pair who are involved in abducting women as part of a human trafficking ring (and killing anyone who gets in their way). When teenage sisters (Natalie Alyn Lynd, Jade Pettyjohn) and a trans sex worker (Jesse James Keitel) are taken, an ex-cop and private detective (Katheryn Winnick, Kylie Bunbury) race against the clock to find the girls – bumping heads with local police along the way. -

Fighting a War You’ve Already Lost: Zombies and Zombis in Firefly/Serenity and Dollhouse Gerry Canavan Department of English, Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI Abstract This article explores the use of zombie imagery in sf narratives created by Joss Whedon: Firefly (US 2002–3), Serenity (US 2005) and Dollhouse (US 2009–10). The translation of the zombie from its traditional horror-movie context to the far-future space opera of Firefly/Serenity and the near-future cyberpunk of Dollhouse reveals the zombie’s allegorisation of the consequences of biopolitical governmentality and neoliberal capitalism. In both series zombies function as a figure for both the dehumanisation caused by state and market forces and the possibility of Utopian resistance to these forces. -
