Brave New World
BRAVE NEW WORLD by Aldous Huxley (1894-1963) Chapter One A SQUAT grey building of only thirty-four stories. Over the main en- trance the words, CENTRAL LONDON HATCHERY AND CONDITIONING CENTRE, and, in a shield, the World State's motto, COMMUNITY, IDEN- TITY, STABILITY. The enormous room on the ground floor faced towards the north. Cold for all the summer beyond the panes, for all the tropical heat of the room itself, a harsh thin light glared through the windows, hungrily seeking some draped lay figure, some pallid shape of academic goose- flesh, but finding only the glass and nickel and bleakly shining porce- lain of a laboratory. Wintriness responded to wintriness. The overalls of the workers were white, their hands gloved with a pale corpse- coloured rubber. The light was frozen, dead, a ghost. Only from the yellow barrels of the microscopes did it borrow a certain rich and living substance, lying along the polished tubes like butter, streak after luscious streak in long recession down the work tables. "And this," said the Director opening the door, "is the Fertilizing Room." Bent over their instruments, three hundred Fertilizers were plunged, as the Director of Hatcheries and Conditioning entered the room, in the scarcely breathing silence, the absent-minded, soliloquizing hum or whistle, of absorbed concentration. A troop of newly arrived students, very young, pink and callow, followed nervously, rather abjectly, at the Director's heels. Each of them carried a notebook, in which, whenever the great man spoke, he desperately scribbled. Straight from the horse's mouth. It was a rare privilege. -

THE TM 911 Franklin Street Weekly Newspaper Michigan City, IN 46360 Volume 36, Number 3 Thursday, January 23, 2020 3FJOWFOUJOH$MBTTJDT by Edmund Lawler Dan Schaaf (right) records dialogue for his latest project, “Dr. Mabuse: The Gambler,” with Sherri Waddle-Cummings. Photos by Paul Kemiel Suddenly, quite by accident, Dan Schaaf discov- ered a wildly creative artistic pursuit — breathing new life into classic silent fi lms by composing musi- cal scores and scripting dialogue performed by local stage actors. “Channel 20 used to run silent fi lms at midnight,” Schaaf recalls of his epiphany in the late 1990s. “They ran the Fritz Lang classic ‘Metropolis,’ a 1927 sci-fi that I had never seen. I fi gured I needed to see it once in my life, so I set the VCR to record it at midnight.” He watched it the next morning and was enchant- ed by the epic work of cinema from the legendary German director. But there was one problem. “It had this dreadful musical score that sounded like it came from a Laurel and Hardy comedy, and it had absolutely nothing to do with the fi lm,” Schaaf says. “I told myself, ‘I can do better than this.’” And he did. Schaaf, who fi rst began composing music as a Marquette High School student and later while studying English and electrical engineering at Pur- due University, penned a score for “Metropolis.” Un- Sherri Waddle-Cummings infuses emotion into her dialogue for the fi lm. Pre-Upfront Thoughts on Broadcast TV, Promotions, Nielsen, and AVOD by Steve Sternberg
April 2021 #105 ________________________________________________________________________________________ _______ Pre-Upfront Thoughts on Broadcast TV, Promotions, Nielsen, and AVOD By Steve Sternberg Last year’s upfront season was different from any I’ve been involved in during my 40 years in the business. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, there were no live network presentations to the industry, and for the first time since I’ve been evaluating television programming, I did not watch any of the fall pilots before the shows aired. Many new and returning series experienced production delays, resulting in staggered premieres, shortened seasons, and unexpected cancellations. The big San Diego and New York comic-cons were canceled. There was virtually no pre-season buzz for new broadcast or cable series. Stuck at home with fewer new episodes of scripted series than ever to watch on ad-supported TV, people turned to streaming services in large numbers. Netflix, which had plenty of shows in the pipeline, surged in terms of both viewers and new subscribers. Disney+, boosted by season 2 of The Mandalorian and new Marvel series, WandaVision and Falcon and the Winter Soldier, was able to experience tremendous growth. A Sternberg Report Sponsored Message The Sternberg Report ©2021 ________________________________________________________________________________________ _______ Amazon Prime Video, and Hulu also managed to substantially grow their subscriber bases. Warner Bros. announcing it would release all of its movies in 2021 simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max (led by Wonder Woman 1984 and Godzilla vs. Kong), helped add subscribers to that streaming platform as well – as did its successful original series, The Flight Attendant. CBS All Access, rebranded as Paramount+, also enjoyed growth. -
Section I – E Xecutive Summary
SECTION I – EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The mission of the State Election Commission is to ensure every eligible citizen has the opportunity to register to vote, participate in fair and impartial elections, and have the assurance that their vote will count. Over the past decade, the business of conducting elections has become vastly more complex and subject to exceptional scrutiny by voters, candidates, media, and the legal community as never before. This requires everyone involved in the elections process, whether at the municipal, county, or state level, to become more technologically savvy, be better trained, and possess a higher level of election expertise. This is the environment in which the State Election Commission (SEC) must operate and carry out its mission. As the chief election agency in South Carolina, the SEC is tasked with the responsibility of overseeing the voter registration and election processes in the State. Everything that we do as an agency, our programs and our projects, emanates from these responsibilities. The primary mission and goal is to provide the highest level and quality of service possible within our statutory mandates. The SEC maintains the State’s computerized statewide voter registration system. The system contains voter registration data on every registered voter in South Carolina. All county voter registration offices have online access to the database. The SEC is responsible for printing the lists of registered voters for all elections held in the State, which averages approximately 300 each year. In combination with the driver’s license file, the system also serves as the source for jury selection lists in the State. -

James W. Marshall discovered gold in the American River at Sutter’s Mill just a year before Helper’s California visit, and the glittering discovery both inflamed the American imagination and aparked a previously unprecedented explosion of migration West that made San Francisco a Western metropolis and the epicenter of American 1 Western prostitution. -

Brave New World: The Correlation of Social Order and the Process of Literary Translation by Maria Reinhard A thesis presented to the University of Waterloo in fulfilment of the thesis requirement for the degree of Master of Arts in German Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, 2008 ! Maria Reinhard 2008 Author's Declaration I hereby declare that I am the sole author of this thesis. This is a true copy of the thesis, including any required final revisions, as accepted by my examiners. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract This comparative analysis of four different German-language versions of Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World (1932) shows the correlation between political and socio- cultural circumstances, as well as ideological differences, and translations of the novel. The first German translation was created by Herberth E. Herlitschka in 1932, entitled Welt – Wohin? Two further versions of it were released in 1950 and 1981. In 1978, the East German publisher Das Neue Berlin published a new translation created by Eva Walch, entitled Schöne neue Welt. My thesis focuses on the first translations by both Herlitschka and Walch, but takes into account the others as well. The methodological basis is Heidemarie Salevsky’s tripartite model. With its focus on author and work, commissioning institution and translator, it was developed as a tool to determine the factors influencing the process of literary translation. Within this framework, the translations are contextualized within the cultural and political circumstances of the Weimar and German Democratic Republics, including an historical overview of the two main publishers, Insel and Das Neue Berlin. -
