Dynamics of Disintegration: The Later Han Empire (25-220CE) & Its Northwestern Frontier Abstract As a frontier region of the Qin-Han (221BCE-220CE) empire, the northwest was a new territory to the Chinese realm. Until the Later Han (25-220CE) times, some portions of the northwestern region had only been part of imperial soil for one hundred years. Its coalescence into the Chinese empire was a product of long-term expansion and conquest, which arguably defined the egionr 's military nature. Furthermore, in the harsh natural environment of the region, only tough people could survive, and unsurprisingly, the region fostered vigorous warriors. Mixed culture and multi-ethnicity featured prominently in this highly militarized frontier society, which contrasted sharply with the imperial center that promoted unified cultural values and stood in the way of a greater degree of transregional integration. As this project shows, it was the northwesterners who went through a process of political peripheralization during the Later Han times played a harbinger role of the disintegration of the empire and eventually led to the breakdown of the early imperial system in Chinese history.

However, like all things, it must one day end. The court eunuchs have usurped imperial authority, not only deceiving the emperor but promoting corrupt officials and persecuting virtuous ones. The people suffered greatly underneath the eunuch's corruption. But it was Zhang Jiao, a Taoist monk, who hammered in the first nail into the Han's coffin when he formed the Yellow Turban Army. With many dissatisfied peasants flocking to his banner, Zhang Jiao led the Yellow Turbans in revolt against the Han Emperor. Heroes and villains alike took up arms to either quell the chaos or prosper from it. No greater heroes arose during this time than Liu Bei, Cao Cao, and Sun Quan. The leaders of Shu-Han, Cao Wei, and Sun Wu respectively. These three men's destinies were intertwined together. Clashing, unifying and more often conspiring against each other, it was their actions that defined the Three Kingdoms period. While neither of these men nor the legacies they left behind would unite the land, their stories are being retold to this day. You now enter China, for good or ill. Will you join the chaos and prosper as the world around you burns? Will you stand up for righteousness and suppress the chaos, restoring the Han Dynasty to its former glory? In Pursuit of the Great Peace: Han Dynasty Classicism and the Making of Early Medieval Literati Culture Abstract This dissertation is focused on communities of people in the Han dynasty (205 B.C.-A.D. 220) who possessed the knowledge of a corpus of texts: the Five Classics. Previously scholars have understood the popularity of this corpus in the Han society as a result of stiff ideology and imperial propaganda. However, this approach fails to explain why the imperial government considered them effective to convey propaganda in the first place. It does not capture the diverse range of ideas in classicism. This dissertation concentrates on Han classicists and treats them as scholars who constantly competed for attention in intellectual communities and solved problems with innovative solutions that were plausible to their contemporaries. This approach explains the nature of the apocryphal texts, which scholars have previously referred to as shallow and pseudo-scientific.

This question has long perplexed scholars of Chinese religions mainly on account of (1) the alleged deep ethnocentrism of Chinese civilization—that should have prevented the acceptance of a “barbarian” religion and god—and (2) the dearth of reliable relevant information for the period (first through fourth centuries CE). On the basis of the fragmentary textual sources available, the traditional narrative resolved the first problem by arguing that the initial misunderstanding or assimilation of Buddhism in terms of Daoism was pivotal in the initial acceptance of the foreign religion. The second problem has been partially ameliorated by the archaeological discovery in the last decades of dozens of objects bearing recognizably Buddhist motifs that have been dated to this period.

The Literary and Historical Afterlife of Qiao Zhou n what is surely one of the classic understatements in the history of I .sinology, Winston Yang declared, In China, far more people have read [Luo Guanzhong’s 羅貫中] Elaboration [Sanguo [zhi] yanyi 三國志演義 (Extended Meanings of the Records of the Three States)]1 than Chen Shou’s 陳壽 (233–297) Chron- icle [Sanguo zhi 三國志 (Records of the Three States)], and far more Chinese have gained some knowledge of the history of the Three Kingdoms period from the novel than from the official history.2 Now, Yang’s claim may be said to have gone global, with numerous illustrated books, comics, television series, movies, and video games based on Extended Meanings translated into Asian and Western languages and hotly discussed on worldwide internet forums. The widespread acceptance of Extended Meanings as “history” is problematic but not surprising; the text has long been regarded as a sort of popular history. Jiang Daqi’s 江大器 preface to the earliest extant edition (dated 1494) claimed that the intent of the work was to correct the “contemptible and erroneous language” and “wild fiction” of blind storytellers who narrated Three States 三國 (220–280) history,3 and to 1 The attribution of the text to Luo (ca. 1315/18–ca. 1400) is much later than the earliest edi- tion, and the issue of authorship remains hotly debated. Given the serious doubts about Luo’s purported authorship, it becomes difficult to contextualize authorial motive and otherwise place the composition of the work into a historical setting.

If the latter is the case, you will get to experience the magic of Crisis first hand at LIMUN 2015. I have chaired many classic Model UN committees at WorldMUN, OxiMUN, RomeMUN and GIMUN, to name a few of the higher level Model UN conferences in the European circuit, but Crisis has always had a special place in my Model UN experience. My first experience as Crisis director, at CUIMUN three years ago, saw my starting to drink coffee because I found myself on my feet, both figuratively and often literally, from before 9:00 in the morning until 5:00 in the evening, participating in what I still consider the most intense Model UN of my life. I am very excited for the Joint Cabinet Crisis that I and my excellent Deputy Crisis Directors have put together for you (I actually met both of them in Model UN Crisis rooms - Albert was a delegate of mine in 2012, and Aaron was a delegate chair at CUIMUN 2014). Together, we have decided to go back to Imperial China, where no known European circuit Crisis has gone before, to the best of our knowledge.
