Give importance to to importance Give Don Bosco Don OUR YEAR BROTHER PETER DEZANI SDB A contemporary man molded in the spirit of Don Bosco “If one is to do good, one must have a little courage, be ready for sacrifice, deal affably with all and never slight anyone.” Don Bosco

The memories of Dominic College’s 2010 school year are dedicated to the memory of one of our former Salesians, Br Peter Dezani SDB. This year we mark the 10th anniversary of Br Peter’s death in our community on 9 November, 2000.

Br Peter arrived in Glenorchy in 1966 and spent the next 34 years of his life devoted to the young people of Dominic College, continuing the work of our founder, Don Bosco.

Old Scholars near and far, remember Br Peter with great esteem and affection. He established the Salesian Old Boys’ Association in our Savio College days, and later, after the formation of Dominic College, the Dominic Old Scholars’ Association. Br Peter held all of the College’s Old Scholars in his heart, wherever they ventured. He kept in with them and them with him. Salesian kindness, cheerfulness and friendship were his touchstones.

A consummate Woodwork and Technical Drawing teacher, many Old Scholars still treasure the various objects shaped under Br Peter’s skilled direction and guidance.

As we have built and opened our new Trade Training Centre this year, we have decided to dedicate this building to the memory of Br Peter, who dedicated his life to young people using their minds and hands to shape and create.

The Br Peter Dezani Design Centre represents a new era for Dominic College in providing Vocational Education and training opportunities. It will be a place of drawing, designing, and planning for students. It will be a place of creativity, problem solving and deep thinking. It will be a place of diligence, shaping, cutting, molding and construction.

The Dezani Design Centre will allow our young people to learn in new ways. It will be the place where we will remember the service, inspiration and life of Br Peter.

Br Peter epitomizes what our Founder, Don Bosco, hoped for his students – that they be loved and know they are loved. We remember Br Peter and give thanks for this life and memories as we remember our year.

Student learning Our students are the reason why Dominic College exists and they have stretched and challenged themselves in 2010, both individually and collectively. Students have been using technology this year to discover, explore, test and present new knowledge. Our interactive white boards and new banks of lap tops are two essential 21st century learning tools that our students are now using. We have extended the way we recognise and affirm students through our Merit System.

Outreach In the tradition of Don Bosco, outreach opportunities to develop a sense of service to others have been important in the Drama, Dance, Music and the Visual Arts College’s witness to the poor and needy. Dominic College Yearbook 2010 1 Magone Program Our learning and teaching relationship at Dominic is based on a belief in the potential of every student to achieve success. In a Salesian school, learning is considered to be a deep transformational activity of the heart. This year the College introduced the Magone Program to work with secondary students who have become disengaged from their learning. A goals-based program, it is aimed at supporting students to enter transformation.

The learning environment Significant transformations have been undertaken in the College facilities in 2010. The Guzman classrooms have been redesigned and our science laboratories refurbished with an additional laboratory being built. 2010 has been an exciting and rewarding year for all at Dominic College. At the start of the year, students were asked to “raise the bar” in terms of attitude and appearance. We have done an excellent job and the bar has certainly been raised.

At the first Leadership Camp, Ms Gilligan spoke to the leaders about the devastation in Haiti. We worked with students across the College to create a Haiti fundraising event. This was a huge success and kick started our year.

From there, we became involved in events such as school sport carnivals, College Twilight Fair, Dominic Feast Days and retreats/camps.

Some highlights of 2010 were: • The International Women’s Day Breakfast, which opened many girls’ eyes to the work of inspirational women around the world; • The leadership camps where the leaders danced the night away and competed in a Masterchef As the Year 10s leave, we hope challenge; • The New Zealand trip where the the students in the other years students preferred it “shaken not continue to “raise the bar” and stirred”; • The start of annual House Drama take pride in attending Dominic where teachers entertained and students showed off their hidden College. talents; • Students showing their hip hop Rhea Cornelius skills with Justice Crew. and Joshua Young

“Sir, we want to see Jesus” – bringing the Gospel to the young…

It was with mixed feelings that I accepted to return to Dominic College, after an absence of some 30 years. But any apprehension was soon dispelled by the warm welcome from Salesians, staff, parents and students. While the physical plant had changed considerably and the educational programs being offered are much more varied and rich, the family spirit and friendly relations between staff and students were still there. impetus. Throughout the year students are immersed in the Salesian tradition, which values loving kindness. This sets a deep connection between staff and students.

The students participate in the “Good News for Living” Religious Education program. There are four key perspectives that underpin this program: the Doctrinal Dimension, the Catechetical Dimension, the Pedagogical Dimension and the Curriculum Dimension.

6 Dominic College Yearbook 2010 Feast Days

Each year the college celebrates two noteworthy Feast Days in Term 1 and Term 2.The first Feast Day was celebrated on May 6 to remember the Salesian Charism of St John Bosco and his pupil, St Dominic Savio. Both Campuses attended a Mass led by Father Frank Bertagnolli.

In Term 2 we reflected upon the lives of Dominic Guzman and Catherine of Siena. Catherine worked with the sick and attracted a following of men and women who accompanied her on her frequent journeys. Dominic Guzman was a man of remarkable character and vision. He had the deepest compassion for every person. We endeavour to take the examples of Dominic Guzman and Catherine of Siena in our learning about God and in being compassionate towards others in need.

On October 15 we gathered to celebrate the remarkable life of Mary MacKillop, an Australian woman who co-founded the Sisters of St Joseph in 1866. She has become ’s first saint. Mary believed that through God’s love she could provide education and human dignity to the poor.

Dominic College Yearbook 2010 7 Social outreach

Outreach to Haiti

2010 saw the unfolding of the disastrous effect of an earthquake in Haiti. Many Salesian works in Haiti were affected including schools and youth centres. Fr Pascual Chavez Villanueva, Rector Major of the Salesians in the world, made an appeal to all Salesian works to assist in some tangible way.

The Dominic College student leaders along with Mrs Sonia O’Leary worked on the idea of a concert to raise money to assist the Salesians in Haiti to rebuild their centres, in order to continue their work among the people of Haiti. The idea became a reality on April 21 with the “Hope for Haiti Concert” and $6,650 was raised from this event and other activities.

There was involvement all across the college with raffles, food stalls, clowning, the “Hi five for Haiti” and music to entertain, raise awareness and support those affected by the earthquake.

Dominic College Yearbook 2010 15 Mathematics & Science

In the primary years at Dominic College we aim to make Mathematics and Science learning enjoyable. Children achieve at their own rate. There are lots of hands- on activities, questions to ask, problems to solve and concepts to learn. Seemingly simple concepts are vital for young children to learn well because they become the foundation for more advanced concepts in the secondary years.

These primary concepts are well served by our students as they move on to years 7 - 10. Students are offered a structured and challenging core and elective program of study and, as usual, our students are rising to that challenge.

We have also offered a wide variety of extra-curricular activities. Our students participated in the PICSE Science Investigation Awards at UTAS in which they represented Dominic with great distinction.

Many of our students also performed be aided by the new development in the with distinction in the national science and science blocks. maths competitions proving once again our students are capable of great things. English is an integral part of our lives. Every day, we are listening, responding, reading, creating, viewing and speaking. Throughout the year, the students at our College have experienced a multitude of rich learning tasks to engage them in literacy.

It has been a busy year in the English/Literacy Department. Some Year 7s were involved in the MS Readathon in Term 2, while all Year 9s took part in a workshop by Mr Geoff Goodfellow, an Australian author with a quirky sense of humour. Year 8s worked with a Dominic Old Scholar, Mr Lenny Bartulin, who is now a well-known author. Our Year 10s attended a presentation by Ms Marcelle Bernard, a motivational speaker who gave students ideas on how to speak in public and at interviews.

Dominic College Yearbook 2010 29 Achievement & Support Programs

Student Support

As part of ongoing student support at Dominic, the Life Skills program has offered secondary students the opportunity to meet with other participating Catholic Colleges in a Social Network Club. Once a month participating schools take a turn at being the host to the other colleges. Recently we have enjoyed a trip to Moonah Bowls, a double-decker bus ride, a visit to The Royal Hobart Show and a trip on the Lady Nelson. All events are accompanied by lunch. As well as being educational events, the visits provide an opportunity to enrich social skills and practise team work, plus they are a lot of fun.

Mrs Gillian Taylor Learning Support Teacher

Achievement Area

Our aim is to bring the College dream to life; “an exciting learning community in which each individual’s learning goals are moved in a positive direction.” This means every student and teacher are part of the Achievement Area in a myriad of different ways; whole class, small groups, individuals. This can mean specifically the student who needs extra assistance, those who need enrichment, and those who need time to work on a small section of work. This work can be done in the classroom, in Room 5 or where ever is deemed appropriate for the learning. Each student’s learning is valued and treated on an individual basis, thus each student receives the learning that is relevant to them.

Dominic College Yearbook 2010 39 Bosco

Bosco is a unique example of revolution and achievement within Dominic College. It only took one win for “The Big Blue House” to realise the immense potential it had to succeed in 2010. Starting with an intense Swimming Carnival, Bosco presented itself as a foremost contender in the race for the Aggregate Shield. A victory in this carnival renewed the spirit and confidence in members of Bosco House, since this was the first year Bosco had won the Swimming Carnival in 10 years. Due to the fact that Bosco finished last in the 2009 carnival, this was a very special undertaking. Special mentions must go to Chloe Stevenson and Ellen Young, who won Year 10 swimming events despite being in Year 7.

Dominic College Yearbook 2010 43 Savio

2010 proved to be a busy year in Savio House with commitment and participation being a common theme. Across the school some very good results were obtained on our carnival days with great spirit and sportsmanship always displayed.

Some highlights on the carnival days include 1st places in the Primary Cross Country, Secondary Athletics Carnival and Secondary Cross Country Carnival.

As secondary Student Leaders, we were kept busy with some new initiatives. The first ever Savio House newsletter “Shark Tales” became compulsory reading and the introduction of new Savio T-shirts and singlets also proved popular.

Our sponsor child, Esther Nyapendi from Uganda, was a focus for our fundraising activities. Esther is in Year 6 and she enjoys playing sports, ball games, and she wishes to be a doctor.

A highlight for many this year was House Drama, where we performed a slightly twisted version of Jack and the Bean Stalk. Great fun was had by all rehearsing and performing this entirely student led activity.

Siena had a great year on the athletics field and in the pool on the Secondary Campus with both carnivals getting a great attendance. There were a number of successful individual and team efforts at both carnivals and we would like to applaud everyone involved on their commitment and house spirit. The Cross Country Carnival was our other big sporting event this year and once again we had a much improved number of competitors. Siena as a whole is very proud of everyone who participated and we hope to have even more success in the next few years.

In the K - 6 Years, Siena showed the way for the Secondary, managing first place in the House Swimming Carnival with 357 points! Again, the Siena primary students were in the mix in the Cross Country Carnival finishing only 4 points behind the winners. We’re expecting a result just as successful for the upcoming Athletics Carnival. 7 new talent, Nellie Ryan, who played the Gregson, Kiera Farr, Jessica Edmundson, The Dominic Day Cup may have went to star role of Little Red. “...Raise the bar... we can do it with 100% support from everyone.” Paul Williams, 2010.

Paul Williams, our Head of Secondary Students, came up with the image of a student jumping a high jump that accompanied this quote. The quote would be the metaphor that would challenge our students throughout the year in many different domains.

From their classroom and their efforts in literacy and numeracy to the ways they related to others and everything in-between. From the sacred, and their engagement with what it is to be a member of a Salesian community at Dominic College, to the energetic like the “Dominic’s Got Talent,” we have raised the bar considerably.

There is an old hymn sometimes sung at Mass that has the line, “we are many parts, we are all one body.” The 100% support fidelity.” Dominic College is “dynamic” in comes from an appreciation of each other’s the way it responds to the educational uniqueness and our willingness to support needs of today’s students but the challenge and encourage others, especially in areas we is always to incorporate Salesian principles may not have explored ourselves. Reaching for the stars in Year 1

With a whole school focus this year on “raising the bar,” our Year 1 students have been thinking about, discussing and writing out goals that we have set for ourselves. Some of these include work habits, neatness, giving our best efforts to all we do, being a caring friend and listening to the teacher. Each term children set their own goals and they were proudly displayed around our classrooms as a reminder, and to share with friends and families. At the end of each term reflections were written about how the students felt they were achieving these goals. This goal setting has contributed to a positive, responsible and motivated classroom environment where happy learners have made pleasing progress.

“I am happy because I have reached my goals and I’m happy because I have done it. My goals were hanging on a little “mini-me” and it helped me more because I always knew it was there. I never want to stop reaching for it and I do not want to stop adding on to it because it is my favourite thing. My best part of Year 1 is that everyone is so happy because happy kids work at Dominic College.” Charlotte

Year 3 is an important year in a student’s education. The move to Year 3 represents a transition from the infant classes, into the primary school environment. The past year has seen a lot of firsts for the children of Year 3.

During Term 1, seven new students entered the Year 3 classrooms for the first time, and Miss Skinner was looking forward to teaching Year 3 for the first time in a long time. The students participated in their first Primary Swimming Carnival, and enthusiastically supported their house groups. Some students were privileged to represent Dominic at interschool carnivals. We also undertook NAPLAN testing for the first time at the end of Term 1. Our excursion to Mt Field National Park at the end of Term 1 was the first time many of us had been trekking in a national park, and was a great test of our resilience!

During Term 2, the Year 3 classes again showed off their sporting prowess, through participating in many sporting teams, and putting in a big effort in the Dominic Primary Cross Country, another first. Our excursion to the Hobart Penitentiary Chapel gave us a new insight into the history of Hobart, and our trip to the top of the Shot Tower was the first time many of us had climbed so many stairs.

Term 3 saw the Year 3 classes take on the responsibility of leading a K-6 liturgy for Remembrance Day. Some of us learnt how to move with Justice Crew, and we all had great fun at our first 3/4 Sports Day and Primary Athletics Carnival. Exploring inventions was a highlight of our term.

As you can see, it has been a big year of change and of firsts. Some have been fun and some have been a challenge, but we have taken it all into our stride, and have had a great year.

(Chinese Proverb) The focus of this year has been on learning. We have learnt so many new things in many different ways. Year 4 started on a positive note with an excursion to Molesworth Environment Centre. We had a great day working in teams to complete some really difficult physical challenges. Challenging ourselves to do our personal best has been an on-going focus of the entire year. We’ve grown crystals, expressed ourselves through dance with Mrs Butterworth, read books, watched an opera, worked with talented artists, sculptured rubbish into art, linked our handwriting and been rewarded with a pen licence, became authors and editors, spoke like mathematicians, researched on the Internet, enjoyed exploring with e-learning tools, kept ourselves fit and healthy, been good sports and have reflected, prayed and given thanks. Year 4 has been a rewarding learning journey filled with intellectual, emotional, social, physical and spiritual growth for all. Congratulations to this group of enthusiastic, active and happy students. It has been wonderful to be a part of your education journey.

2010 has been a wonderful year full of learning, sharing, friendship and growth for all students in Year 5. The year has been very busy, and we have shared wonderful learning experiences inside and outside of the classroom.

As well as our Literacy, Numeracy and Religion programs, students have particularly enjoyed learning about Antarctica, gold, Bali, space, packaging, marvellous micro organisms, movie making and Mary MacKillop. Students enjoyed excursions to Molesworth, CSIRO, and the Museum and Mineral Centre. We enjoyed a fantastic camp to Woodfield Lodge in Term 1 which was the highlight of the year for many students.

During Term 2 many students took the opportunity to participate in the Friday afternoon sport netball and rosters. Students in Year 5 are very talented and also loved participating in extra curricular activities such as choir, dance, drama, soccer and basketball. We have also been involved in many fundraising activities like Hi5 for Haiti, Jump Rope for Heart and Vinnies Winter Shield Appeal. Year 5 has been very fortunate to have Mrs Bickers working with both classes throughout the year.

It has been a pleasure to teach such enthusiastic, motivated and well mannered children. Congratulations on a wonderful year.

68 Dominic College Yearbook 2010 Secondary curriculum

This report highlights just two areas of curriculum development undertaken during 2010. Each year becomes busier than the previous year and 2010 was no exception. Besides gearing up to implement the new Australian Curriculum in Year 7 in 2011, a number of additional learning opportunities were offered to students.

The four curriculum areas that form Phase One of the new Australian Curriculum are: English, Maths, Science and History. Colleges have until 2013 to fully implement Phase One across all year levels. Dominic College will begin the phase-in process next year in Year 7.

For 2011 our formal reporting system to parents will remain under the current format. However, once the new Australian Curriculum is fully implemented across Years 7 to 10, all Tasmanian Catholic Colleges will be reporting on the same format.

Throughout 2010 a number of additional learning opportunities were available for all students under the banner of co- curricular subjects. In order to facilitate these programs teachers and students committed their free time either before school from 7.45am, lunchtime, or after the formal academic day concluded at 3.30pm. Some co-curricular activities also involved weekend participation. A list of these opportunities and photos can be found in the co-curricular section of the Yearbook.

What an extraordinary year it has been. The Federal Government’s Building the Education Revolution capital grant program has created a level of continuous building activity never before seen at Dominic College.

Three Guzman classrooms have been refurbished to bring them into the 21st century and create contemporary teaching and learning spaces with data projection and interactive whiteboards. Bigger windows and light coloured paintwork have made them bright and airy.

Work to transform the existing Savio Centre into a Design Centre and Dance and Drama facility commenced in mid February. The Design Centre specifically gymnasium facilities, a Sports Science caters for two of our VET courses, Cert room, a student kitchen and a teaching I in Building and Construction and Cert I area dedicated to Languages Other Than in Engineering, as well as our established English (LOTE). ICT a focus in 2010

2010 has seen a focus on professional learning in the area of Information Communication Technology (ICT) for the staff at Dominic College. Each year a range of new and exciting technologies enters the school environment, so continued professional learning ensures that we at Dominic College are able to continue to push the boundaries in our use of this technology.

Throughout the year, many staff demonstrated their enthusiasm for all things technical by attending optional small group professional learning sessions. We are blessed as a college to have many talented and committed teachers on staff who are more than willing to share their expertise with other staff. Topics covered in these sessions range from making the most of your Outlook calendar through to some quite advanced PhotoShop work.

July saw us welcome internationally respected speaker, Dr McKenzie, to the college. Dr McKenzie spent two days with staff challenging us to make “good use” of technology. This included challenging for teachers at Dominic to spend time “e-conference.” In this format conference us to look at why and how we are using with Australia’s most influential educational delegates were spread wide across the the technology we have at hand, and technology authorities.
