OUR YEAR OUR BROTHER PETER DEZANI SDB A contemporary man molded in the spirit of Don Bosco “If one is to do good, one must have a little courage, be ready for sacrifice, deal affably with all and never slight anyone.” Don Bosco The memories of Dominic College’s 2010 school year are dedicated to the memory of one of our former Salesians, Br Peter Dezani SDB. This year we mark the 10th anniversary of Br Peter’s death in our community on 9 November, 2000. Br Peter arrived in Glenorchy in 1966 and spent the next 34 years of his life devoted to the young people of Dominic College, continuing the work of our founder, Don Bosco. Old Scholars near and far, remember Br Peter with great esteem and affection. He established the Salesian Old Boys’ Association in our Savio College days, and later, after the formation of Dominic College, the Dominic Old Scholars’ Association. Br Peter held all of the College’s Old Scholars in his heart, wherever they ventured. He kept in touch with them and them with him. Salesian kindness, cheerfulness and friendship were his touchstones. A consummate Woodwork and Technical Drawing teacher, many Old Scholars still treasure the various objects shaped under Br Peter’s skilled direction and guidance. As we have built and opened our new Trade Training Centre this year, we have decided to dedicate this building to the memory of Br Peter, who dedicated his life to young people using their minds and hands to shape and create. The Br Peter Dezani Design Centre represents a new era for Dominic College in providing Vocational Education and training opportunities. It will be a place of drawing, designing, and planning for students. It will be a place of creativity, problem solving and deep thinking. It will be a place of diligence, shaping, cutting, molding and construction. The Dezani Design Centre will allow our young people to learn in new ways. It will be the place where we will remember the service, inspiration and life of Br Peter. Br Peter epitomizes what our Founder, Don Bosco, hoped for his students – that they be loved and know they are loved. We remember Br Peter and give thanks for this life and memories as we remember our year. Images: top to bottom: Br Peter Dezani in his later years. Br Peter during his time at Dominic College. Students have been using technology this year to discover, explore, test and present new knowledge. Our interactive white boards and new banks of lap tops are two essential 21st century learning tools that our students are now using. We have extended the way we recognise and affirm students through our Merit System. Outreach In the tradition of Don Bosco, outreach opportunities to develop a sense of service to others have been important in the Drama, Dance, Music and the Visual Arts College’s witness to the poor and needy. Dominic College Yearbook 2010 1 Magone Program Our learning and teaching relationship at Dominic is based on a belief in the potential of every student to achieve success. In a Salesian school, learning is considered to be a deep transformational activity of the heart. This year the College introduced the Magone Program to work with secondary students who have become disengaged from their learning. A goals-based program, it is aimed at supporting students to enter transformation. The learning environment Significant transformations have been undertaken in the College facilities in 2010. The Guzman classrooms have been redesigned and our science laboratories refurbished with an additional laboratory being built. Our Science facilities are now Mrs Sue Whyte and Mrs Roslyn Wilson will first rate. Our new Trade Training Centre, retire from teaching this year. At the start of the year, students were asked to “raise the bar” in terms of attitude and appearance. We have done an excellent job and the bar has certainly been raised. At the first Leadership Camp, Ms Gilligan spoke to the leaders about the devastation in Haiti. We worked with students across the College to create a Haiti fundraising event. This was a huge success and kick started our year. From there, we became involved in events such as school sport carnivals, College Twilight Fair, Dominic Feast Days and retreats/camps. Some highlights of 2010 were: • The International Women’s Day Breakfast, which opened many girls’ eyes to the work of inspirational women around the world; • The leadership camps where the leaders danced the night away and competed in a Masterchef As the Year 10s leave, we hope challenge; • The New Zealand trip where the the students in the other years students preferred it “shaken not continue to “raise the bar” and stirred”; • The start of annual House Drama take pride in attending Dominic where teachers entertained and students showed off their hidden College. talents; • Students showing their hip hop Rhea Cornelius skills with Justice Crew. and Joshua Young Images, clockwise from top: College Captains 2010 – Michael Cleary, Rhea Cornelius, Ms Gilligan, Bianca Hollingsworth and Joshua Young.
