This study is aimed at investigation of the correlation between the problems of democratization process manifested in reduction of the public recognition of Kyrgyzstani political actors and growing public interest to Islam, on the one hand, and addressing Islam by Kyrgyzstani political actors in their speeches and behavior, on the other. In this respect, the study asks: how have Kyrgyzstani political actors addressed Islam in their public rhetoric and behavior in the context of unconsolidated democracy since 2005, and what is the role of Islamic revival in this process? Basing on literature review, media analysis of facts of addressing Islam by Kyrgyzstani political actors, and critical discourse analysis of their speeches, the study has provided the following results. -

Byler University of Washington Abstract Spirit Breaking: Uyghur Dispossession, Culture Work and Terror Capitalism in a Chinese Global City Darren T. Byler Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Sasha Su-Ling Welland, Department of Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies This study argues that Uyghurs, a Turkic-Muslim group in contemporary Northwest China, and the city of Ürümchi have become the object of what the study names “terror capitalism.” This argument is supported by evidence of both the way state-directed economic investment and security infrastructures (pass-book systems, webs of technological surveillance, urban cleansing processes and mass internment camps) have shaped self-representation among Uyghur migrants and Han settlers in the city. It analyzes these human engineering and urban planning projects and the way their effects are contested in new media, film, television, photography and literature. It finds that this form of capitalist production utilizes the discourse of terror to justify state investment in a wide array of policing and social engineering systems that employs millions of state security workers. The project also presents a theoretical model for understanding how Uyghurs use cultural production to both build and refuse the development of this new economic formation and accompanying forms of gendered, ethno-racial violence. -

Centre for Peace Studies Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Education Thesis title: Understanding ideologies of “radical” Islamic movements in contemporary Kyrgyzstan Name of author: Meerim Aitkulova Master’s thesis in Peace and Conflict Transformation – SVF 3901 - May 2016 ii ABSTARCT This thesis examines violence potential of such Islamic movements like Tablighi Jamaat, Salafi and Hizb ut-Tahrir based on the study of the connection between religion and violence in their ideologies. In order to understand this connection, the study focuses on 17 qualitative interviews with the members of the above-mentioned movements as well as with the experts representing different areas. The thesis presents a background of the religious situation in the country, by drawing attention to the historical process of Islamization in Kyrgyzstan and peculiarities of the religious situation existing today. General characteristics of the movements under study are discussed as well. The conceptual framework used several key concepts like jihad, peace and peacebuilding in Islam, fundamentalism and arguments developed within the field of Critical Terrorism Studies. The findings that emerge from the study indicate that generally members of the chosen Islamic movements, despite differences in their memberships, share an opinion that violence is not normal to Islam and that their ideologies mainly support a peaceful resolution of conflicts. Analysis of the experts’ data reflects a division among them over the question of violence potential of the mentioned movements. For some experts popular narrative about the radicalization of Muslims is an exaggeration, for other experts, the conflicting nature is inherent to these movements. However, findings indicate that experts concurred that the risk of religious violence in Kyrgyzstan cannot be excluded, due to the number of external and internal factors both of religious and of non-religious in nature. -

WOMEN OF KYRGYZSTAN AND TAJIKISTAN: HISTORICAL LEGACIES IMPACTING CONTEMPORARY INVOLVEMENT BY REBECCA ANNE BLACKBURN THESIS Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2011 Urbana, Illinois Adviser: Professor Keith Hitchins ABSTRACT This research explores the development of the status of women in post-Soviet Central Asia. The research shows that women in Kyrgyzstan are more actively pursuing opportunities to contribute to civil society than what is found in Tajikistan, where the pressures for women to return to more traditional roles has resulted in considerably fewer opportunities for female involvement in the sphere beyond the home. This research aims to explain the reasons we see such different levels of female involvement in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, despite their shared history as Soviet republics and the similar economic problems the states experienced with the transformation of their societies in the decades following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Research concerning female involvement in non-governmental organizations (NGOs), the education system, and the problems related to rural life is utilized to explain the divergent paths of the two nations. It is concluded that a primary factor in the development of gender relations is due to the pre-Soviet traditions that have resurfaced in the post-Soviet era with the development of each individual state‟s national identity. -

Tablighi Movement in the Context of Reislamization in Kyrgyzstan: Local Practices and Contested Discourses The Translocal Tablighi Jamaat(TJ) Network that emerged in India and Pakistan in the early twentieth century began to expand its missionary activities in Central Asia in the 1990s. Its aim was to bring post-Soviet Muslim society back to Islam through a revival of religious practice by travelling lay missionary groups with a a ―davat‖ program, a local term for ―daw‘a‖ ( Call, Invitation). Although the Tablighi Jama‘at is currently banned in all Central Asian countries and Russia, with the exception of Kyrgyzstan, the movement has gradually increased its impact on the region and significantly contributed to what is called ―alternate globalities‖. The paper aims at examination of Translocal Tablighi Jamaat Network (TJ) as a channel for creation, deconstruction and reconstruction of both ―old‖ and ―new„ customs as a source of authority. By traditions and customs we mean traditional cultural and religious practices of Kyrgyz Muslims that are contested and reconsidered in a new way in Tablighi practices and discourses. By ―new customs‖ we refer to those customs that are introduced by ―davatchys‖ ( preachers) through such Tablighi practices as ―Davat‖ (preaching tour), ―Taalim‖( teaching) and ―Bayan‖ according to six point principles ( 6 syfat) of TJ. The paper explores the dynamic process of Networking of Tabligi Jama‘at and looks on how Tablighis follow preexisting kinship (social) ties in the first step, and later extend its networking by the creation of new symbolic ties. Focusing mostly on two groups- young male preachers (―davatchy‖) and female preachers (―masturat‖) and analyzing their narratives and stories we will discuss customs related to behavior, clothing, communication style and gender relations .
