    Kirkintilloch High School Newsletter Edition 8 Christmas 2018 Kirky High-lights PTA Christmas1 Fayre 2018 See Page 3 for Further Details KHS Twitter Follow us Headlines @kirkintillochhs Head Teacher Update Christmas Dear Parent/Carer, 2018 This edition marks our busy first term drawing to a close and as we prepare for our Christmas Break, it is gratifying to reflect on the many fantastic opportunities that have been on offer to our young people this session. This newsletter highlights a selection of these, and looks forward to continued success as we move forward together into 2019. Notable successes include our fantastic PTA Fayre from November of this year which raised a tremendous amount of money for our school fund. As our PTA takes a well- earned break, we thank them for their outstanding commitment to our school over a number of years. Also featured is information about the wealth of clubs and activities on offer to our young people throughout the week and a special insert about our forthcoming activities during Christmas Week, 2018. We thank our school captains for leading this for their peers. Raising attainment sessions continue to be a positive feature of our provision with planned improvements based on pupil feedback to be announced shortly. These have been ably supported by staff across the school an well attended by young people, preparing them for their Prelim examination diet. This week sees S4 pupils complete their Prelim exams with the S5/6 diet planned to begin on the 14th January 2019. We have also planned and delivered bespoke study skills and reflection sessions to round off the prelim diet and hope that many of our young people will avail themselves of the opportunity to attend these.

    NOT FOR BROADCAST OR PUBLICATION BEFORE SATURDAY 1 SEPTEMBER 2018 HOMES NEAR TOP SCOTTISH SCHOOLS COMMAND £73K PRICE PREMIUM Parents pay a premium of almost £73,000 (36%) on average compared to average house prices across Scotland Average property prices have reached £277,134 near Scotland’s top 20 state secondary schools Parents need to pay an average of £72,973 more to live in the catchment area of a top performing state secondary school in Scotland, according to new research from Bank of Scotland showing that average prices in these areas have now reached £277,134. Home buyers are paying, on average, a premium of over a third (36%) when compared to houses in surrounding areas (£204,162). This is a significantly higher premium than last year, when the top 20 Scottish state schools were commanding a comparatively smaller premium of £41,441 on average or 22% more than other properties within the same local authority. This difference is due to a change in the mix of schools in the top 20 in the past year – with a number of new schools in relatively more expensive areas in the latest survey. New entrants such as Hyndland Secondary School in Glasgow and James Gillespie's High School in Edinburgh have driven up the average premium costing an average of 76% and 69% respectively than other homes in the same local authorities – topping the table in first and second position as the most expensive school catchments. There are six new entrants to the top 20 schools this year, all of which fall within the top 10 most expensive school catchments.

    PROPOSED CHANGES TO THE ARRANGEMENTS FOR ADMISSIONS AND THE TRANSFER OF PUPILS FROM PRIMARY TO SECONDARY TO ALL EAST DUNBARTONSHIRE PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS Background All councils must • ensure effective management of their school estates and provide sufficient places for their pupil population. • adhere to the general principle that children should be educated in line with their parents’ wishes; • The roll projections for all primary and secondary schools take account of the housing developments within the area as well as the trends in placing requests. Current position • A number of schools have high occupancy levels. This is due to demand for catchment places and / or through the placing request process from parents, who live out with the catchment area. • Other schools have low occupancy levels. Current position • Within East Dunbartonshire, there is well established specialist provision. This includes the Music School within Douglas Academy, the Gaelic Medium Primary Education Unit within Meadowburn Primary, the Gaelic Medium Secondary Provision within Bishopbriggs Academy and the Football Academies in partnership with Celtic Football Club at St Ninian’s High School and with Rangers Football Club at Boclair Academy. • The current policies require to be updated to ensure they are comprehensive and reflect the current context within the Council. • This will ensure clear information for parents and carers and ensure that there is efficient management of the school estate. What is this proposal? • To consult on the proposed changes for all East Dunbartonshire denominational (Roman Catholic) and non-denominational primary and secondary schools to : • the admissions arrangements, including Primary 1 and during a school session; • the arrangements for the transfer of pupils from a primary school to a secondary school; • the arrangements for admission to the Educational Specialist Provision within East Dunbartonshire.

    Boclair Academy www.boclair.e-dunbarton.sch.uk Boclair News MARCH 2017 Dear Parent / Guardian Welcome to our March edition of Boclair News. Yet again it has been a busy few weeks for our young people and staff and it is set to get busier over the coming weeks as we approach the exam period for senior pupils. At the start of January our Senior pupils undertook Preliminary Examinations across all subjects. While there were some disappointments for individuals the overall performance of the year groups involved was extremely positive. A lot of hard work is now required from all young people in S4, S5 and S6 in order to ensure they build on their current performance levels. Final presentation levels for all pupils in the senior phase have been issued to parents and I would encourage you to contact your child‘s guidance teacher if there are issues with the levels. I would also remind you that revision classes will run for most subjects on the first four mornings of the Spring Holiday. It has also been a busy period for S3 pupils who have completed S3 assessments across their nine subjects in the lead up to course planning. This is the first year young people have been able to make changes at the end of S3 and all pupils have engaged well with the process. At the same time they have been contributing well to the wider life of the school through extracurricular events. Their energy levels, enthusiasm and commitment are to be commended at this busy time.

In the absence of a Clerk to the PC, KT will take this evening’s minutes. RJ has now served four years as Chair and asked for a volunteer to take over the post. DW offered to take on the post of Chair. This was proposed by RJ and seconded by CD. DP will remain as Vice-Chair. This was proposed by RJ and seconded by AK. D. Williams took over chairing the meeting. 2 MATTERS ARISING FROM PREVIOUS MINUTES For the benefit of new members, RJ stated that minutes are issued by email after each meeting and members have a week to respond with comments. Minutes are then approved electronically to save time at future meetings. At the last meeting in June, M. Kennard reminded the PC that she was resigning from the post of Clerk. As yet there have been no applicants for the post. 3 EXAM RESULTS GM asked to take this along with item 6 Head Teacher’s Report.
