Abstract As a result of the continuous loss of forest habitats in Madagascar, forest fragments that exhibit a high degree of degradation and are strongly embedded on the livelihood needs of rural Malagasy people are increasingly being considered as the focus of conservation management operations. This new type of protected areas, based on the IUCN’s Category V management model for conservation action, promises a social-ecologically balanced method of environmental intervention that seeks to protect ecological communities while promoting sustainable socioeconomic systems. However, due to the poor ecological quality and immense level of anthropogenic influence in the type of forests that serves as the background to this conservation system, the benefit that this model can provide to lemur conservation remains unclear. In this thesis, I address these uncertainties exploring how the habitat conditions and current conservation initiatives of a small Category V new protected area in northern Madagascar influence the present and long-term viability pattern of a resident crowned lemur population. Using ecological niche models (ENMs) and occupancy assessments, my research shows that at Oronjia Conservation Park, crowned lemurs navigate high levels of anthropogenic disturbance and poor habitat quality by maximizing their use of the few forest sections capable of supporting the population. Furthermore, my research shows that community-based conservation initiatives are creating a social landscape where the continued risk of habitat loss and deterioration can be properly managed. However, lemurs show a complex olfactory repertoire which includes conspicuous scent-marking behaviours. We studied two family groups of crowned lemurs at Colchester and Twycross zoos (UK) by combining behavioural observations and chemical analyses of odour secretions released via scent-marking. Male lemurs scent-marked most frequently, showing three types of behaviours: ano-genital marking for applying their scent on to females; head marking for placing their secretions on or near the mark left by another individual; and wrist marking to deposit their mark in specific meaningful areas of the enclosure. Female lemurs displayed only ano-genital marking primarily on feeding devices. We detected a total of 38 volatile compounds in male ano-genital scent-marks and 26 in female ano-genital odour secretions, including many compounds that have been identified in odour profiles of other primates. In conclusion, we found sexual dimorphism in crowned lemurs. In males head and wrist marking behaviours would play defensive territorial functions, while ano-genital marking may be related to socio-sexual communication; female ano-genital marking could be involved in resource defense.

Since 2016, Monitoring has been expanded in other villages where network of investigators have been established in the various potential fishing areas. At each catch landings, an investigator collects tuna catch data and other catches, and also performs sampling. The date of landing, the time at sea, fishing zone, the weight and total number of individuals landed are recorded; and measurements of tuna and tuna like species are conducted. According to the catch monitoring since the pilot phase in 2015, it can be seen that the tuna season in the northern waters of Madagascar is from June to October. In 2016, catches from small-scale fisheries in these two pilot villages reached 102 tons, including 59 tons of tuna and 43 tons of other catches. The tuna average catch is estimated at 5.3 tons per month. In 2017, total catches in the North of Madagascar reached 3 704 tons including 80 tons of tuna and 4 tons of swordfish from 192 692 landings. Indeed, tuna represents only 2% of total catch for these villages because small-scale and artisanal fishermen still face a challenge, which is the lack of appropriate equipment for catching tuna and tuna like species.

Date completed: August 2006 Problem The majority of the Malagasy people who live in Madagascar are unreached with the gospel message. A preliminary investigation of current literature indicated that 50 percent of the Malagasy are followers of traditional religions. This present study was to develop a strategy to reach the animistic people with the gospel message. Method This study presents Malagasy people, their social characteristics, population, worldviews, and lifestyles. A study;and evaluation of Malagasy beliefs and practices were developed using Hiebert's model of critical contextualization. Results The study reveals that the Seventh-day Adventist Church must update its evangelistic methods to reach animistic people and finish the gospel commission in Madagascar.
