Bio Dave Alvin and Jimmie Dale Gilmore
Dave Alvin & Jimmie Dale Gilmore Downey to Lubbock Biography written by: Joe Nick Patoski Downey, California to Lubbock, Texas is a thousand-mile straight shot across the heart of the American West, with not much in between. The cities at each end of the line are one-time cowtowns that grew into symmetrically-platted working-class communities with very little to interrupt the horizon plane, making for big empty canvasses that require a vivid imagination to fill in all that blank space. Dave Alvin from Downey and Jimmie Dale Gilmore from Lubbock have been filling canvasses with music of the American West for decades, coming from two very different directions. The title track explains Alvin is a Strat-packing, wild blues Blaster, a nod to the roots rock band he formed with his brother Phil in 1978 before Dave peeled off to go his own way in 1986. He’s been part of the bands X, the Knitters, and the Flesh Eaters, tours relentlessly with his own band, the Guilty Ones, and continues apace on musical quests informed by his love of California and its history, and by Texas and the South, where most of the great music that was made in Los Angeles before and after the Second World War came from. Gilmore is the old Flatlander from the Great High Plains, acknowledging his first group, the folk-country trio formed in Lubbock 1972 with Joe Ely and Butch Hancock who continue performing and recording today. In addition to the Flatlanders and an extended solo career, he has been part of several ensembles including the Hub City Movers and The Wronglers with Warren Hellman, who started the Hardly, Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco. -

Basically, a bunch of us used to write for a punk magazine called B-sides or something like that. Maybe Flipside? It was actually the longest continuously publishing punk rock magazine in America. It may still be. I can't say for sure. All I know PO Box 42124 from my personal experience is that I did an interview with Against All Authority sometime during the summer of 1999, and that interview is set to Los Angeles, CA 90042 run in the next issue. So if it does still come out, at least we know it's timely. www.razorcake.com Anyway, if you want to know more about Flipside and its possible demise, check out Todd's column. And now on to the things I do know about. I know Todd left Flipside and wanted to start a new magazine, so first he Email went to Tucson to meet with Skinny Dan and Katy. Together, the three of Sean <[email protected]> them came up with the name and the beginnings of a web zine. The #takeatest initiative follows the UK government’s lifting of most COVID-19 restrictions from today (July 19th), allowing music venues to fully re-open for the first time in over 16 months and is a response to the move towards ‘personal responsibility’ as the principal guidance moving forward. Music Venue Trust, in consultation with grassroots music venues around the country are launching a social media led campaign urging music fans to accept responsibility to keep themselves, their fellow gig-goers safe and the staff at music venues safe as restrictions are lifted. Using the hashtag #takeatest the messaging will be very clear: Be Kind: Be respectful. Be part of the live music community #takeatest or Artists are taking a test to protect you. Dear Congress: NIVA |National Independent
Dear Congress: We, the undersigned artists, respectfully submit this letter in support of NIVA’s request for federal assistance for independent music venues and promoters across the United States. We will know America is “back” when our music venues are filled with fans enjoying concerts safely. The live music experience is inextricably tied to our nation’s cultural and economic fabric. In fact, 53% of Americans – that’s 172 million of us – attended a concert last year. We urge you to remember we are the nation that gave the world jazz, country, rock & roll, bluegrass, hip hop, metal, blues, and R&B. Entertainment is America's largest economic export, with songs written and produced by American artists sung in every place on the globe. All of these genres of music, and the artists behind them, were able to thrive because they had neighborhood independent venues to play in and hone their craft, build an audience, and grow into the entertainers that bring joy to millions. Independent venues give artists their start, often as the first stage most of us have played on. These venues were the first to close and will be the last to reopen. With zero revenue and the overwhelming overhead of rent, mortgage, utilities, taxes and insurance, 90% of independent venues report that if the shutdown lasts six months and there’s no federal assistance, they will never reopen again. We are asking you to support NIVA’s request for assistance so these beloved venues can reopen when it’s safe and welcome us and our fans back in. -
