THE ATLANTIC MIND: ZEPHANIAH KINGSLEY, SLAVERY, AND THE POLITICS OF RACE IN THE ATLANTIC WORLD by MARK J. FLESZAR Under the Direction of Dr. Jared Poley and Dr. H. Robert Baker ABSTRACT Enlightenment philosophers had long feared the effects of crisscrossing boundaries, both real and imagined. Such fears were based on what they considered a brutal ocean space frequented by protean shape-shifters with a dogma of ruthless exploitation and profit. This intellectual study outlines the formation and fragmentation of a fluctuating worldview as experienced through the circum-Atlantic life and travels of merchant, slaveowner, and slave trader Zephaniah Kingsley during the Era of Revolution. It argues that the process began from experiencing the costs of loyalty to the idea of the British Crown and was tempered by the pervasiveness of violence, mobility, anxiety, and adaptation found in the booming Atlantic markets of the Caribbean during the Haitian Revolution. -

BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES. 613 part of the township, and ultimately owned several hun dred acres there, covering the south end of Beech hill and extending on both sides of the branch, including a large part of the intervale southwest of his cabin. "One of the first things he did was to plant an or chard, and some years later, when the trees were partly grown and the Indians began to be troublesome, looking out from his cabin he saw one of the savages cutting down an apple tree. He took down his gun, and that Indian never cut any more trees." "He used to lie in his cabin, or under a brush heap, with his gun, and watch for lurk ing Indians while his wife milked the cows." (Heaton tra dition.) His log cabin was burned by the Indians when the township was abandoned, in 1747, but he was one of the first to return, and he built the low farmhouse, still stand ing on the east side of the street, opposite the site of his log cabin-the second from the old Mount Pleasant tavern -and lived and died there. He was at one time a lieuten ant in the militia. It is a tradition in the family that that was the first framed house built in the township-doubt less now the oldest house in town-and it is still in pos session of his descendants ; but the large old chimney has been removed and two smaller ones substituted. His sons and other descendants afterwards built houses and lived along the same road, towards the branch; and some of the old barns still standing there were built by the elder Heaton. -

ABSTRACT The long and lucrative history of smuggling in the early modern period receives the attention of colonial scholars only as it relates to their isolated geographic field of study, ignoring the broader history that linked imperial economies in a mercantilist age. This thesis addresses the history of eighteenth-century smuggling in the Caribbean by examining both British and Spanish sources in order to shift the angle of focus away from imperial metanarratives and towards an understanding of the commercial networks forged between Spanish and British colonists on the periphery of empire. By examining the contraband trade between Jamaican merchants and residents of Cartagena, this work explores the blurred lines of colonial jurisprudence as well as the commercial networks necessary to the survival of those colonial spheres. -

Playful Subversions: Hollywood Pirates Plunder Spanish America NINA GERASSI-NAVARRO The figure of the pirate evokes a number of distinct and contrasting images: from a fearless daredevil seeking adventure on the high seas to a dangerous and cruel plunderer moved by greed. Owing obedience to no one and loyal only to those sharing his way of life, the pirate knows no limits other than the sea and respects no laws other than his own. His portrait is both fascinating and frightening. As a hero, he is independent, audacious, intrepid and rebellious. Defying society's rules and authority, sailing off to the unknown in search of treasures, fearing nothing, the pirate is the ultimate symbol of freedom. But he is also a dangerous outlaw, known for his violent tactics and ruthless assaults. The social code he lives by inspires enormous fear, for it is extremely rigid and anyone daring to disobey the rules will suffer severe punishments. These polarized images have captured the imagination of historians and fiction writers alike. Sword in hand, eye-patch, with a hyperbolic mustache and lascivious smile, Captain Hook is perhaps the most obvious image-though burlesque- of the dangerous fictional pirate. His greedy hook destroys everything that crosses his hungry path, even children. On a more serious level, we might think of the tortures the cruel and violent Captain Morgan inflicted upon his enemies, hanging them by their testicles, cutting their ears or tongues off; or of Jean David Nau, the French pirate known as L 'Ollonais (el Olonés in Spanish), who would rip the heart out of his victims if they did not comply with his requests; 1 or even the terrible Blackbeard who enjoyed locking himself up with a few of his men and shooting at them in the dark: «If I don't kill someone every two or three days I will lose their respect» he is said to have claimed justifyingly. -

The Westminster Model Navy: Defining the Royal Navy, 1660-1749 Samuel A. McLean PhD Thesis, Department of War Studies May 4, 2017 ABSTRACT At the Restoration of the English monarchy in 1660, Charles II inherited the existing interregnum navy. This was a persistent, but loosely defined organization that included a professional community of officers, a large number of warships, and substantial debts. From the beginning Charles II used royal prerogative to define the Royal Navy. In 1661, Parliament created legislation that simultaneously defined the English state and the Royal Navy. These actions closely linked the Royal Navy’s development to that of the English state, and the use of both statutes and conventions to define the Navy provided the foundation for its development in the ‘Westminster Model’. This thesis considers the Royal Navy’s development from the Restoration to the replacement of the Articles of War in 1749 in five distinct periods. The analysis shows emphasizes both the consistency of process that resulted from the creation and adoption of definitions in 1660, as well as the substantial complexity and differences that resulted from very different institutional, political and geopolitical circumstances in each period. The Royal Navy’s development consisted of the ongoing integration of structural and professional definitions created both in response to crises and pressures, as well as deliberate efforts to improve the institution. The Royal Navy was integrated with the English state, and became an institution associated with specific maritime military expertise, and the foundations laid at the Restoration shaped how the Navy’s development reflected both English state development and professionalization. -
A Rare Mid Eighteenth Century Octagonal Carved Mahogany Silver Table Veneered and Inlaid with Tortoiseshell and Bone
92 Fulham Road, London, SW3 6HR, United Kingdom - Tel: +44 (20) 7584 2200 - Web: www.godsonandcoles.co.uk A RARE MID EIGHTEENTH CENTURY OCTAGONAL CARVED MAHOGANY SILVER TABLE VENEERED AND INLAID WITH TORTOISESHELL AND BONE REF950 English, circa 1740 Height: 27 ¼ in (69 cm) Width: 28 in (71 cm) Depth: 26 in (66 cm) The octagonal top veneered with segmented mahogany, strung with chequer inlay and centred by a compass rose of bone and rosewood. The moulded border carved with a running leaf moulding. The frieze on all sides carved and pierced with trelliswork and pierced with tortoiseshell and bone and bordered by chequer stringing. The eight legs similarly pierced, veneered and connected to the frieze with carved ‘C’ scroll brackets. The stretcher uniting the legs, similarly carved with double ‘C’ scrolls, joined in the centre by a turned and carved finial. The legs raised on original brass and leather castors. PROVENANCE This rare and highly unusual centre or ‘silver’ table was originally made to display the seventeenth century casket now in the possession of Her Majesty the Queen. As discussed by Charles R Baird in ‘The Connoisseur Magazine’ in December 1932, the casket, known as the ‘Watson Casket’ was thought to have originally been commissioned by Sir Charles Wager (1666-1743), First Lord of the Admiralty. DESCRIPTION Sir Charles was appointed Commander in Chief in Jamaica in 1706. The following year he was promoted to Rear Admiral of the Blue, and in December the following year was knighted. Thereafter he became in turn, Comptroller of the Navy and Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty, Privy Councillor and then First Lord of the Admiralty.
