The insistence that all facilitators have doctorates in the humanities is, on the other hand, a requirement that the National Endowment for the Humanities builds into all its educational program grants. Some of you have had to ask for exceptions to this requirement, and in all instances, we have approved these exceptions because you have come up with people who are both experienced teachers and also have a special interest in film, literature, and/or aging. In short, we are fully confident that you will all do an excellent job introducing your students to this new, timely, entertaining and yet extremely important subject, one that promises to have a direct personal impact on its participants. -
My Hundred Years of Solitude: an Essay Marcos Villatoro
My Hundred Years of Solitude: An Essay Marcos Villatoro The pages are yellowed. The spine is broken at least a dozen times. Decades-old, crisscrossed rubber bands hold the book together. They’ve stayed stretched for too long and have dried brittle. I should change them out. But they’ve become part of my art piece, this disintegrating copy of Cien años de soledad. In English, One Hundred Years of Solitude. It’s a paperback copy, the eleventh edition. I keep it in a zip-lock plastic bag and pull it out only after washing my hands. It’s a pitiful thing and the most important book in my library. I’ve never shelved it. It’s on a countertop in my office, always in sight. My talisman. Not that it brings me good fortune; it simply helps me settle into one of my two bloods, the once- hidden one, undiscovered until this book came along. I can’t read this copy anymore. It would crumble into dust. There are at least five other editions spread throughout the house, each in its own gradation of decay. Their spines are more or less intact. Each one taken in succession has fewer notes, fewer needs to write vocabulary in the margins, unlike this first copy, which I ravaged with two ball point pens, red and black. The last copy I recently bought in Colombia, a fiftieth- anniversary hardbound edition with artwork. I’ve yet to read it. I want to read it without a pen, without underlining lines of poignant moments in the story. -

Photo Diana K. Arreola Vol. 44 No. 8 Published by Acción Latina Abril 24–Mayo 7, 2014 Laura Waxmann El Tecolote he past four weeks have perhaps been the hardest T times that many of Ale- jandro Nieto’s close family and friends will have to experience in their lives. The shocking news of the 28-year-old man’s death at the hands of San Francisco police of- ficers, the storm of media cover- age and confusion that followed, as well as the accusations and lack of information revealed by those responsible, have led many com- munity members to denounce police brutality and injustices in the legal system. On April 21, a group consist- ing of those who knew Nieto and many who didn’t, participated in the first of what they said will be monthly memorial gatherings to “demand justice.” Burritos in hand, they trekked from Precita Park up to the west side of Bernal Hill, where the young man was gunned down just a month ear- lier—Nieto is said to have been eating a burrito at this spot before being shot at least 10 times by San Francisco Police officers on the evening of March 21. “How many people who were born and raised in the Mission or in Bernal, had one of their very first kisses on this hill? This place was traditionally called ‘Lover’s Lane.” This is what they called it, because everybody came out here to have their first romance,” said Adriana Camarena, a law con- sultant and literary writer. “Alex loved this place— he was a lover, and that’s why he would come up here, to see this beautiful view and sunset.” The grief and anger over what Nieto’s family believes to have been an unjustified shooting has been directed into a community movement demanding justice. -

Gringo Viejo: the Labyrinth of Solitude Revisited Joseph Chrzanowski
Gringo viejo: The Labyrinth of Solitude Revisited Joseph Chrzanowski, California State University, L.A. With its setting in northern Mexico during the revolutionary period, its reference to historical figures, and its depiction and examination of early twen tieth-century socioeconomic conditions in the country, there is ample justifica tion for linking Carlos Fuentos's Gringo viejo (1985)1 to the literary phe nomenon commonly referred to as the novel of the Mexican Revolution.2 Like other of Fuentes's works, it also reveals a profound indebtedness to Octavio Paz. Central to that influence are ideas and theories that Paz develops in his classicemifo de la soledad} This essay examines the way in which Fuentes has incorporated a number of Paz's major ideas into thematic and character de velopment in Gringo viejo. Fuentes's novel presents a fictionalized account of a trip to Mexico in 1913 by the American journalist and short-story writer Ambrose Bierce—the old gringo. Letters by the historical Bierce reveal that his motivation in crossing the border was to determine freely when and where he would die. At the beginning of the novel, the old gringo is dead and his body has been returned to the United States. The story is a reconstruction of his experience through the eyes of an omniscient narrator and the recollections of one Harriet Winslow, a young American woman whom the fictional Bierce befriends in Mexico and who plays a principal role in the events recounted in the novel. The third major character is the revolutionary Thomas Arroyo, the illegitimate son of the landowner whose grandchildren Harriet had been contracted to tutor. -

Through academic collaboration, co-curricular activities, or mutual institutional support, these relationships broaden the resources we have available. Mount students engaged in research with Mount faculty have benefited from their professors’ relationships with both UCLA and Caltech. Professors Deniz Cizmeciyan-Papazyan and Julia Chang regularly accompany students to UCLA where they utilize both laboratories and equipment. Professor Eric Stemp travels with students to Caltech to conduct experimental research on DNA. Cross-registration between the Mount and both UCLA and American Jewish University is available to our baccalaureate students. One of our mathematics majors recently completed applied statistics at UCLA. American Jewish University students frequently enroll in foreign language courses at Mount St. Mary’s. Mount students have many opportunities to study at partner institutions both at home and abroad. Students may attend the Washington Semester program at American University in Washington, D.C. Our interchange with CSJ sister schools is also an attractive option. In recent years, Mount students have attended St. Catherine University in Minneapolis and The College of Saint Rose in Albany, N.Y. Last year, Mount St. -

The presentation is divided into four broad sections. The first section, "Why Teach the Mexican Revolution?" furnishes a rationale for teaching a course about a revolution that took place much closer to home than the Russian or Chinese Revolutions. The second section, "How Can the Mexican Revolution Lend Itself to Cross-Curricular Enrichment?" contains examples of curriculum enhancement using selections from literature, journalism, drama, art, music and dance, Spanish, technology, science, and mathematics. The third section, "Sample Unit with Connections to State and District Standards," outlines a 3-week unit of study that constitutes a major focus for a U.S. history course. The fourth section, "Resources," details historical references, historical fiction, videos (in both English and Spanish), and Internet sites. -
