    1 The Observer in the Quantum Experiment Bruce Rosenblum1 and Fred Kuttner1 A goal of most interpretations of quantum mechanics is to avoid the apparent intrusion of the observer into the measurement process. Such intrusion is usually seen to arise because observation somehow selects a single actuality from among the many possibilities represented by the wavefunction. The issue is typically treated in terms of the mathematical formulation of the quantum theory. We attempt to address a different manifestation of the quantum measurement problem in a theory-neutral manner. With a version of the two-slit experiment, we demonstrate that an enigma arises directly from the results of experiments. Assuming that no observable physical phenomena exist beyond those predicted by the theory, we argue that no interpretation of the quantum theory can avoid a measurement problem involving the observer. 1. INTRODUCTION From its inception the quantum theory had a “measurement problem” with the troubling intrusion of the observer. As usually seen, the problem is that the linearity of the Schrödinger equation forbids any system that it is able to describe from producing the unique result observed in an experiment. There is no mechanism in the theory-- beyond the ad hoc probability assumption--by which the multiple possibilities given by the Schrödinger equation become the single observed actuality. The literature addressing this enigma has continued for decades and expands today. In fact, a list of the ten most interesting questions to be posed to a physicist of the future includes two questions directed to this enigma, one of which directly involves the observer(1).

The pilot study demonstrated that peer observations were worth implementing because: (1) teachers gained valuable insights into aspects of their teaching; (2) observers learned from their colleagues' teaching;(3) teachers worked together instead of in isolation;(4) teacheys became more involved in preparing for class;(5) students were more attentive in class; and (6) the results from peer observations helped teachers decide how to improve their teaching effectiveness. However, the internet is the most popular platform among 16-24s (82%) and ethnic minority groups (EMGs) (73%). BBC One is the most-used news source, used by 62% of UK adults, followed by ITV (41%) and Facebook (33%). BBC One also had the highest proportion of respondents claiming it was their most important news source (27% of users). Social media is the most popular type of online news, used by 44% of UK adults. However, while lots of people are able to recall the social media site they consumed the news on, some struggle to remember the original source of the news story. When scored by their users on measures of quality, accuracy, trustworthiness and impartiality (among other things) magazines perform better than any other news platform. At the same time, use of social media for news use has gone up (49% vs. 44%). Use of TV for news is much more likely among the 65+ age group (94%), while the internet is the most-used platform for news consumption among 16-24s and those from a minority ethnic background. Fewer UK adults use BBC TV channels for news compared to last year, while more are using social media platforms. As was the case in 2018, BBC One is the most-used news source among all adults (58%), followed by ITV (40%) and Facebook (35%). However, several BBC TV news sources (BBC One, BBC News Channel and BBC Two) have all seen a decrease in use for news compared to 2018. Use of several social media platforms for news have increased since last year (Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram and Snapchat). There is evidence that UK adults are consuming news more actively via social media. For example, those who access news shared by news organisations, trending news or news stories from friends and family or other people they follow via Facebook or Twitter are more likely to make comments on the new posts they see compared to the previous year. When rated by their users on measures such as quality, accuracy, trustworthiness and impartiality, magazines continue to perform better than other news platforms, followed by TV.

For example, if we wanted to measure aggressive behavior in children, we could collect those data by observing children with our eyes, by using equipment to measure the force with which they hit an object, by examining juvenile crime records, by surveying parents and teachers, by interviewing parents and teachers, or by administering an aggression scale to children. This is just a sample of the methods that are possible; we are sure that you could imagine many others. However, these examples do illustrate several distinctly different methods that can be used to collect data. As with most research design techniques, each method has advantages and limitations. Perhaps the most interesting and challenging of these is the method of observation. (In a sense, all of behavioral research is based upon observation. What we describe here is a specific kind of observational procedure.) Historically, behavioral research has relied heavily on this method, and it will undoubtedly continue to be a primary method for gathering behavioral data.
