    Winchester Cathedral: Safe, Sound, and Secure A Centenary Tribute to William Walker the Diver by David Farthing David Farthing is a retired civil engineer and a Winchester Cathedral Guide, with a special interest in the underpinning project in which William Walker played a vital part at the beginning of the 20th century. Recent Recognition for The Winchester Diver In March 2018, the author was privileged to attend a short ceremony at the one-time home of the diver, formerly 112 Portland Road, South Norwood, when a commemorative plaque was unveiled by the Dean of Winchester Cathedral, Catherine Ogle. (The houses were renumbered in the 1950s.) Contact: [email protected] 1 Introduction ‘What service settings and anthems were sung in Canterbury Cathedral during 1873- 1988’ is a straightforward question to answer. The significance of the practice of choral music making in Canterbury Cathedral in the restoration and growth of Cathedral worship and early music repertoire deserves close examination through the information discovered in that first answer. The implication is that reinstatement of the worship and development of early music, following a period of impoverishment, was necessary. Investigation of the nature of changes made in Canterbury Cathedral, together with the progress of expansion of that worship, through music, becomes a challenging essential. Regeneration describes the breathing of new life, as in recovery from serious illness, which was shown to be necessary in the music and worship of the early 19th century, following the vicissitudes of disagreement, war and apathy regarding style of worship in general and the role and compositional characteristics of music in particular.

The beginnings of Winchester are suggested by the evolution of its name from suppositious Celtic through attested Latin to everyday English. Caergwinntguic becomes Cair-Guntin, Caergwintwg, Caer Gwent, Venta Belgarum, Venta Castra, Wintanceastre, Wincestre, Vincestre and finally Winchester. The names chart the city’s passage over a thousand years from Britonic through Roman to Saxon possession, and they give a historical and linguistic starting point for the Winchester Series. From the sixth to the eleventh century, Winchester was in the Westseaxna Rice, the kingdom of Wessex, the home of the West Saxons. They ruled land between the south coast and the River Thames. They contested their northern and eastern boundaries with the kingdom of Mercia; what are now the counties of Oxfordshire, Sussex and Kent were sometimes part of the one kingdom and sometimes part of the other. To the west, Wessex was bounded by the River Taw or by the River Tamar as today’s Devon was contested with the British kingdom of Dumnonia. At highpoints, the West Saxon kings claimed rule over the whole of England, but the heart of their kingdom was Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Berkshire, Wiltshire, Dorset, and Somerset.

You enrich my life and bring me joy in all our musical offerings together. 2 Claire E Stewart, November 2020 Abstract Abstract The aim of this thesis has been to examine the effects that the introduction of girl choristers has had on the all-male tradition that hitherto characterised the Anglican cathedral choir. Arguably, the future of any tradition relies on the success of the present generation for its survival and continuity. That should not imply that the tradition remains identical as in past generations, but rather that a tradition should be able to respond and, if necessary, embrace new ideas. The thesis provides an historical context for the widely reported and seemingly ground-breaking initiative at Salisbury Cathedral in the early 1990s. Through the analysis of contemporary texts, related literature, interviews, a small-scale survey and three illustrative in-depth case studies (Salisbury, Lincoln and Lichfield), the thesis reviews the background to this choral development and explores the immediate and subsequent impact across the sector. The initiative at Salisbury was not (and in some instances is still not) without controversy and so opportunity is taken in the text to rehearse examples of these conflicting views by drawing on contemporary commentary, in part by using the lens of Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT).
