Coastal distribution of green turtle in liuchiu island 黃品則*、程一駿 Pin-Ze Huang* and I-Jiunn Cheng 國立台灣海洋大學海洋生物研究所(National Taiwan Ocean University , Institute of Marine Biology) 琉球嶼,俗稱小琉球。 Does the same nesting turtle use the same migratory strategies in different nesting year? Comparison of the behavior and morphology characters of the hatchling Green Turtles (Chelonia mydas) among three rookeries, Lanyu, Liuqiu and Wan-an Islands Chun Hung Lin* and I.-J. Interference to the Green turtles caused by coastal light pollution in Lanyu.

  • Development of Central Taiwan
Chapter IV Findings and Discussions 1. Ethnic Groups Involved in the Development of Central Taiwan “Development” originally means “cultivating a piece of wild land until it becomes productive”, and people also use the word to refer to the civilization process not only limited to agriculture but including cultural, social, economical and behavioral changes as well (Yin, 1989). Since development is a kind of purpose-driven activity, people involved in the process must play an important role. There had been Austronesian groups, Dutch, Han people and Japanese living in Central Taiwan along the time axis before Taiwan was returned to China in 1945, and in the following account we will start from Austronesian groups. 1.1 Austronesia People An account of Taiwan can be traced back to Sui Dynasty (隋朝), called “Liuqiu” (流 求) at that time. In “History Book of Sui” (隋書) it was written that the “Liuqiu kingdom is located in the ocean.” At that time, the emperor of Sui intended to conquer it, but their language was not intelligible, so the emperor recruited people from the south to form an army, for one of the southern ethnic groups, Kun-lun (崑崙), also known as Malaysian (馬來人), can understand Liuqiu’s language quite well (Abe, 1994). According to this passage and recent linguistic research, these people should belong to Austronesian groups and were the earliest inhabitants of Taiwan. 17 Austronesian people in Taiwan can be divided into two groups: mountain groups and plains groups, also known as Pingpu groups. The mountain groups are better known by people in Taiwan, for their language and culture are still distinguishable.

Balazs2 [email protected] / [email protected] PhD student of City University of Hong Kong. [email protected] Pacific Islands Regional Vice Chair, IUCN SSC Marine Turtle Specialist Group. January 2013 In October 2011 we attended a sea turtle stranding workshop in Taiwan. After this informative and enjoyable meeting of turtle specialists, our colleague Prof. I-Jiunn Cheng kindly invited several of us to visit Liuqiu Island (Latitude 22° 20’ 19.12’’N, Longitude 120°22’11.34’’E) (in Chinese ) of Pingtung County in Taiwan (See maps 1-3 attached). A 20-minute ferry boat ride 15km off the west coast of Taiwan, the island is only 6.8 km² with coral and rock fringing reefs, clear water, several sandy beaches and three boat harbors. With a human population of about 12,000, local residents make their living primarily by distant-water fishing and tourism from Taiwan. The island is famous for its rich Tao and Buddhist temple culture. In November 2012 we returned to the Liuqiu Island again for cultural respect for the Liuqiu Wangye Worshipping Ceremony () only held every 3 years. For several days a large beautifully constructed replica of a boat is transported for worship by hand around the island along with the Palanquin of Wangye. Using tons of ‘paper money’ the boat is then set on fire on the beach and entirely burned to ashes. Two of our friends, local conservationists Tien and Sophia at the Ocean Blue Hostel led us to the cliff at the spot “Camping Area”, in the north of Liuqiu Island, to observe foraging green turtles in the late afternoon on 8 November 2012.

Genre and Empire: Historical Romance and Sixteenth-Century Chinese Cultural Fantasies Abstract Chinese historical romance blossomed and matured in the sixteenth century when the Ming empire was increasingly vulnerable at its borders and its people increasingly curious about exotic cultures. The project analyzes three types of historical romances, i.e., military romances Romance of Northern Song and Romance of the Yang Family Generals on northern Song's campaigns with the Khitans, magic-travel romance Journey to the West about Tang monk Xuanzang's pilgrimage to India, and a hybrid romance Eunuch Sanbao's Voyages on the Indian Ocean relating to Zheng He's maritime journeys and Japanese piracy. The project focuses on the trope of exogamous desire of foreign princesses and undomestic women to marry Chinese and social elite men, and the trope of cannibalism to discuss how the expansionist and fluid imagined community created by the fiction shared between the narrator and the reader convey sentiments of proto-nationalism, imperialism, and pleasure.

Sains Malaysiana 44(12)(2015): 1677–1683 Geologic Hazard Risk Assessment of Slopeland Villages in Southern Taiwan Using Remote Sensing Techniques (Penilaian Risiko Bahaya Geologi di Kampung-kampung Tanah Cerun di Taiwan Selatan menggunakan Teknik Pengesanan Jarak Jauh) SHU-RONG YANG* & YI-LUNG YEH ABSTRACT Countering the dangers associated the present extreme climate not only requires continuous improvement of local disaster prevention engineering infrastructure but also needs an enhanced understanding of the causes of the disasters. This study investigates the geologic hazard risk of 53 slopeland villages in Pingtung county of southern Taiwan. First, remote sensing (RS) techniques were utilized to interpret environmental geology and geologic hazard zonation, including dip slope, fault, landslide and debris flow.GIS map overlay analysis was used to further identify the extent of the geologic hazard zonation. As a final step, field investigation is used to comprehend geologic, topographic conditions and the geologic hazard risk specific to each locality. Based on data analysis and field investigation results, this study successfully integratesRS , GIS and GPS techniques to construct a geologic hazard risk assessment method of slopeland village. The results of this study can be used to promote support for future disaster prevention and disaster mitigation efforts. Keywords: Geologic hazard; landslide susceptibility; remote sensing; slopeland village ABSTRAK Pembilang bahaya berkaitan iklim melampau semasa bukan sahaja memerlukan penambahbaikan berterusan infrastruktur kejuruteraan pencegahan bencana tempatan tetapi juga perlu peningkatan kefahaman tentang punca berlakunya bencana ini.

A proposed conceptual framework is used to examine this largely ignored situation through the case study of Xiao Liuqiu Island. The small island in Taiwan reveals a previously understudied phenomenon in sustainable island tourism. The psychological processes connecting cultural and cross-cultural experiences with sustainable tourism are explored using primary and secondary data collected through in-depth interviews of domestic tourists and online reviews of foreign tourists, respectively. Data analysis reveals the significant result that sustainable island tourism comprises two important elements: a supply and a demand side of a destination. The supply side describes low-carbon service operations—which include food, lodging, and ecological tourist activities—while the demand side reflects tourist behaviors—expressed through cognition, emotion, and motivation as well as authenticity. In addition, this paper makes an important contribution to management by emphasizing the need for careful attention to tourism psychology, particularly in natural and ecological environments that use tourism as a marketing strategy in cultural ecosystems services (CES).
