The full Coat of Arms is displayed at ceremonial occasions such as Convocation, and is used by the Chancellor, the titular head of the University. On the shield is a representation of the topography of Alberta rendered in the colours of the University. At the base is a prairie wheat field symbolizing Alberta’s agricultural industry. The wavy gold line above suggests the hills and rivers of Alberta and, in particular, the setting of the University campus. The top of the shield is in gold and separated from the rest of the shield by a line suggesting the Rocky Mountains. The book of learning dominates the design. On the crest is a Grand-Duc d’Amérique, or Great Horned Owl, the provincial bird and an accepted symbol of knowledge. The pronghorn, taken from the Provincial Coat of Arms, and the golden bear, mascot of the University, support the shield. Both wear collars of the University colours, as does the owl. At the base of the Coat of Arms is a grassy mound with wild roses, the floral emblem of Alberta with the University’s motto: Quaecumque Vera (Whatsoever things are true). TURPIN President and Vice-Chancellor 2 UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA ALUMNI SPEAKER THE RIGHT HONOURABLE BEVERLEY MCLACHLIN, PC, CC Beverley McLachlin served as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada from 1989 to 2000 and as Chief Justice of the Court from 2000 to 2017. Ms. McLachlin received her post-secondary education at the University of Alberta: B.A. (Hon.) 1965; M.A. 1968; LL.B. 1968. She practiced law in Alberta and British Columbia and taught law at the University of British Columbia, before being named to the bench in British Columbia, where she served as a trial and appellate judge before being named to the Supreme Court of Canada. Since retiring from the Supreme Court of Canada, Ms. McLachlin has pursued her interest in dispute resolution as an arbitrator and mediator, as a member of the Hong Kong Court of Appeal, the Singapore International Commercial Court and the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre. She continues to work for access to justice and to write and speak on legal and other matters in Canada and abroad. The North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance (NSWA) is a non‐profit society whose purpose is to protect and improve water quality and ecosystem functioning in the North Saskatchewan River watershed in Alberta. The organization is guided by a Board of Directors composed of member organizations from within the watershed. It is the designated Watershed Planning and Advisory Council (WPAC) for the North Saskatchewan River under the Government of Alberta’s Water for Life Strategy. Prepared for the Antler Lake Stewardship Committee (ALSC) Antler Lake State of the Watershed Report Executive Summary The Antler Lake Stewardship Committee (ALSC) formed in 2015 to address issues related to lake health. Residents at the lake expressed concerns about deteriorating water quality, blue‐green algal (cyanobacteria1) blooms, proliferation of aquatic vegetation, and low lake levels. In 2016, the Antler Lake Stewardship Committee approached the North Saskatchewan Watershed Alliance (NSWA) to prepare a State of the Watershed report.

    Response to ‘Next steps on Book Pahlavi’ (L2/20-135) Arash Zeini 8th May 2020 Introduction Pournader & Hai (2020) might be right in saying that ‘Book Pahlavi may be the best-known complex script not yet encoded in Unicode’. However, I am inclined to add that Book Pahlavi is certainly one of the least researched and understood scripts of late antiquity. Much work is needed before we can make reliable statements about the palaeography of Book Pahlavi. The issues that have puzzled the Unicode experts are in part genuinely difficult to answer. But in my view, the wrong questions have also been asked at times.1 In this document I will attempt to answer the questions raised by Pournader & Hai (2020) which is a very welcome addition to the proposals as it consolidates the questions that have remained unanswered. Please note that my rendering of Middle Persian words and Pahlavi characters is limited by the possibilities offered by the available fonts, which are not designed to accurately represent the scribal idiosyncrasies. If any representations raise more questions, please contact me for clarifications. Question 1 yh/1: The MP suffix -īh, transliterated <-yh>, is written / in Book Pahlavi. Contrary to Meyers (2014:12), the correct analysis of / is ! + + or $ + -. Some- times the scribes abbreviate or rather simplify this sequence of characters to . This happens most commonly at the end of the line, and not in everymanu- script. It is, for instance, very rare in manuscripts of the Pahlavi Yasna.
